## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (INCLUDING DIRECTORS' REPORT)** _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020**_

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2020.

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the accounts and comply with the charitable company's Memorandum and Articles of Association, the Companies Act 2006 and the Statement of Recommended Practice, "Accounting and Reporting by Charities", issued in January 20 1 5.

## **Objectives and activities**

The objects of the charitable company are to advance the Christian religion either in the UK or overseas, in particular but not exclusively, by:

- the advancement of education;

- the promotion of good race relations and equality of opportunity between persons of different racial groups; and

- the relief of poverty particularly amongst children in inner-city areas.

The directors seek to achieve these aims by:

- training and equipping Christian groups in the UK to work with inner-city children. This is achieved primarily by the retail of relevant training materials.

- raising awareness of, and collecting funds for projects which relieve poverty amongst children overseas.

The charity's trustees have referred to the guidance in the Charity Commission's general guidance on Public Benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning its future activities. In particular, they have considered how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives they have set .

## **Grant making**

The trustees will consider any requests for grants or donations which they receive. However, due to the nature of the company's operation, it is unlikely to make any grants available (other than passing on donations received for specific purposes) .

## **Achievements and performance**

The beginning of 2020 saw Metro World Child UK seeing out our notice on the office premises at 39 Station Road following a new landlord with new lease conditions that the trustees felt weren’t to the best benefit of the charity, particularly regarding the financial impact. To save on expenses we have moved to a smaller office space.

The office is now based at The Charis Centre in Crawley. This has been an excellent move on many levels. There are no additional costs e.g. water, gas, electricity, council tax rates etc as this is all covered in the rent. During January we had a phone line and broadband installed. We were able to continue the same telephone number as Station Road providing continuity for our supporters and we have also been able to keep the same PO Box address which has been excellent avoiding inconvenience and additional printing costs. The move to the Charis Centre has also been beneficial in terms of security with a dedicated reception staff and from a ministry perspective has been great to be based in an office situation where staff share the ideals of Metro World Child.

The UK was hit with Covid-19 in March and in April entered a full national lockdown. The office was closed and our office manager, Mrs Cameron, worked from home as per government regulations. During the months of this first national lockdown The Charis Centre very generously waived the rental fee. This was a tremendous help. Early in the lockdown Mrs Cameron rang some of the older supporters of Metro to see how they were doing. These courtesy calls were so well received and she advised the New York office about these calls. The Head Office in New York felt this was an excellent way to support our supporters in this season and so we started a call campaign to check on all our supporters. These calls helped greatly to strengthen the relationship to Metro’s supporters.

Richard Place Dobson page 1

## **TRUSTEES' REPORT (INCLUDING DIRECTORS' REPORT) (CONTINUED)** _**FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020**_

Early in 2020 we saw Mrs Sue Eveleigh begin to volunteer with Metro World Child UK – Mrs Eveleigh has been assisting with items such as sponsor filing, handwritten thank you notes and shredding. She has been a real blessing over this year helping out for a day or two a week. During the end of the year the office at The Charis Centre was moved around to allow for greater social distancing and other suggestions from the UK government incorporated to ensure a safe working environment for two people in a single office to follow government recommendations and to protect both our employee and volunteer.

In the Summer Metro New York launched the Kenya Critical campaign in response to the needs after the impact of Covid-19 on the countries it is operating in. The response to the campaign was excellent with many new sponsors and many donations. A number of existing sponsors took on additional children to sponsor. Overall this campaign was very successful; a number of children were sponsored through our local Metro UK sponsors.

It was planned that Dr Bill Wilson would do his usual Autumn tour in the UK. But the week before the tour with many venues cancelling or unable to meet due to Covid government restrictions the tour was cancelled. A few venues had Dr Wilson and Ms Stellatos to speak via recorded message. Mrs Cameron was also able to speak to a group on a Zoom call raising awareness of the work of the charity which has a great impact on the attendants.

There was another lockdown in November where Mrs Cameron worked from home. December saw our usual Christmas call project. Mr Malcolm Cameron, married to our office manager, Mrs Cameron kindly volunteered in helping with the calls as well as Mrs Paliama from the New York office.

We trialled a new gift option in November with folks being able to purchase a ‘gift certificate’ for a friend for Christmas where kids would be fed in Kenya or a gifted one year child sponsorship. The response was good to this venture; a great benefit for the children in need and the supporters who participated.

As we reflect back on 2020 whilst being a difficult year there have also been good things. The move to the new office has been a great move for Metro World Child UK and feels the right move on so many levels.

We were pleased to see that Metro World Child UK was able to support the partner organisation and its services even more than the previous years. The funds raised through the UK supporters have assisted with various programmes in New York and around the World. In 2020 the key programmes were in Kenya and the Philippines providing food for children and their families – the Kenya critical campaign was a catalyst for raising funds to meet these needs. In many of our outreach areas around the world our children struggle with the reality and effects of extreme poverty. At Metro, we believe that it is important to not only meet spiritual and emotional needs, but we must also address the physical needs that so many of our children face. Our children often lack basic needs integral to their growth and development; things such as school supplies and uniforms, clean drinking water and filling meals or even warm clothing in the winter. Our aim is to help support the development, growth and nourishment of each of our children; we see it as a necessary and critical investment into their future.

The Covid-19 situation has been so challenging for so many of our supporters but we have been amazed to see so many stand up and support even more during this trying time for the poor especially in Kenya.

As we reflect back on 2020 as an organisation although it has been a particularly difficult year we have been amazed at how our supporters have stood with us through this year. We are grateful for the work that we were able to accomplish and for the supporters who made it possible.

## **Financial review**

## **Financial position**

The charity had total net incoming resources of £8,137 (2019: £84,951) in the period as shown in the statement of financial activities on page 5 of the accounts.

## **Reserves policy**

The trustees have established a policy for unrestricted reserves, whereby, in order to enable the charity to operate effectively, they aim to have three to six months expenditure in general funds.

The unrestricted reserves are now £ 127,232 (201 9 : £129,824) and restricted funds are £ 28,545 (201 9 : £17,816 ).

## **2 Critical accounting estimates and judgements**

In the application of the charity’s accounting policies, the trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.

The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.
