The Society of Parents and Friends of

St. Benedict’s School

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Year ended 31 July 2023

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE SOCIETY OF PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF ST BENEDICT’S SCHOOL I report on the accounts of The Society of Parents and Friends of St Benedict’s School for the year ended 31 July 2023, which are set out on pages 2 to 8.

Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

As Trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts; you consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act; to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) ofthe 2011 Act; and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of Independent Examiner’s report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Trust and a comparison of the accounts with those records. It also includes considering any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as Trustees conceming any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to these matters set out in the statement below.

Independent Examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

The Society of Parents and Friends of St. Benedict’s School

Annual Report - Year ended 31* July 2023

Corporate Governance

The governing document is the constitution which was adopted on 29 September 1999 with some minor amendments on 21 September 2015. The affairs of the Society are managed by the Managing Committee; from which the Trustees are appointed. The role of the Managing Committee is to hold property of the Society. The Managing Committee consists of the Abbott’s appointee, the Headmaster and the members elected at the Annual General Meeting. The members elected should be a minimum of three and a maximum of four; being an honorary secretary, an honorary treasurer and up to two elected members.

The General committee handles all fund-raising activities and has no specific powers of its own. The Managing Committee may delegate powers from time to time to the General Committee and such powers are revocable.

The General Committee confirms that the risks to which the charity is exposed have been reviewed and procedures have been established to manage those risks.

Statement of Responsibilities in respect of Trustees

The Charities Act requires the Society to prepare accounts for each financial year that give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Society and of the result of the Society for the period. In preparing these accounts the Managing Committee is required to:

  1. Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently.

  2. Make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.

  3. State whether applicable standards have been followed.

  4. Prepare the accounts on an ongoing concern basis unless it is inappropriate.

The Managing Committee are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Society and to enable them to ensure that the accounts comply with the Charities Act. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Society and detection of fraud and other irregularities, by establishing and maintaining a satisfactory system of control over the Society’s accounting records, cash holdings and all its receipt and remittances.

St Benedict’s School Society of Parents and Friends (SPF) 2022 — 2023 Annual Report from the Chair

The Society of Parents and Friends (SPF) was once again very active throughout the past 12 months, and the school community has benefited greatly from the hard work of the SPF committee and associate members.

The school year got off to a wonderful start with the late summer barbecue in early September 2022, which was attended by more than 450 adults and children. The children, as always, enjoyed the sports activities and bouncy castles/slides on offer, and parents had the chance to catch up animatedly following the summer break.

SPF committee and associate members also made a strong contribution to the Fireworks Party that was held at Perivale just prior to the October half term. The Fireworks Party is organised by the Development Office, under the excellent leadership of Tara George, the Development Director. it would not be as successful without the unstinting energy and support of the SPF.

The Quiz Supper, held in February 2023, was terrific fun and provided a broad range of interesting trivia. Most importantly of all, it was another occasion during which parents and friends of the School could come together for an evening of relaxation and much needed social interaction and collaboration. And of course, it was not at all competitive!

The academic year drew to a close with another highly successful summer Barbecue at Perivale on 17 June 2023, and the event was blessed with decent weather. The SPF very generously supported the purchase of the ‘120’ Anniversary Sculpture which is located near the entrance to the Atrium. It is a stunning piece of artwork and a fitting way to commemorate 120th anniversary of the School.

Thank you for all that you have done and all that you will do during the next 12 months.
