TRUSTEES OF BURY UNITARIAN CHURCH
REPORT OF THE INDEPENDENT EXAMINER
TO THE TRUSTEES OF BURY UNITARIAN CHURCH
I report on the accounts of the Trustees of Bury Unitarian Church for the year ended 31 December 2021 as set out on page 1 to 9.
Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner
As the Trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of accounts: you consider that the audit requirements of Section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act) do not apply. It is my responsibility to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under Section 47(7) (b) of the Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Trustees and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from your Treasurer (acting on behalf of the Trustees) concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent Examiner’s Statement
In connection with my examination no matter has come to my attention:
-
.which gives me cause to believe that in any material respects the requirements, to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 41 of the Act, and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act, have not been met, or
-
.to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

TRUSTEE CHAIRMAN’S REPORT FOR 2021
During 2021 we have met 4 times, twice on zoom in March and June and then when the Covid restrictions had been relaxed we met twice September and December in person at Church. We were sorry to receive the resignation of one of our long serving Trustees, John Fitzpatrick as he and Margaret were re-locating to be closer to their family. John always had his own opinions and he joined in all the discussions he will be missed but of course wish him all the very best for the future. Molly Ratcliffe also re-located to Penrith and Roy Wilkinson has not been present at our meeting because of ill health. I speak to them both regularly especially on agenda items that have either been dealt with or are on going and they both give me their opinions and look forward to reading the minutes after each meeting. Roy is very keen to return the attending the meetings and we can only hope that one day in the future it will happen.
As we are now using the Church every Sunday for services but are once again having problems with the front doors something which we have tried to fix for a long time but hopefully something can be sorted out in 2022. Repairs have been made to the boilers but the main work was the replacement of the fire alarm system throughout the Church and the ancillary work of wiring and retiling that had to be done.
Holebottom Cemetery has been mowed and the hedges have been trimmed in the summer months. Once again a careful watch is being maintained for any problems regarding the graves and vaults. We have paid our Minister the new stipend for the year, also the increased pensions and community charge. Her expenses for visiting members of the congregation increased during the year as the restrictions have relaxed and more visits were done.
Many of the items discussed during the year seemed to be drawn out as it seems that anything that requires altering or changing now leads to complicated and legal forms even for the smallest thing. There always seems to be lots of paperwork to go through and fill in which is very time consuming and sometimes leading to little or no results.
My thanks once again to all the Trustees for their time and input whether in the meetings, on the phone or by email, so that we were able to make decisions to keep the Church building and Holebottom Cemetery safe and in good order.
Susan Holt Chair to the Trustee’s
