Governing document

The charity is operated under the rules of its constitution, which was adopted 15 July 1999.

Organisation and management

The Charity is governed by the members of the association who determine strategic direction and policy. The day to day running of the Charity is carried out by the Management Committee.

Aims and objects

The Charity's objectives are set out in its governing document and are surmised as below: a) to further the religious and other charitable work of Sikhism

b) to hold land and buildings upon trust to permit them to be used as a place of worship and meeting house Cc) to provide suitable accommodation and an environment in which to encourage the study of Sikhism and to promote public interest and recognition of the Sikh Religion in the local and surrounding area.

The Sikh ethos

The ethos of Sikh Gurdwara is centred on recognition of the complete equality of all human beings, including the full equality of women, and a total commitment toa life of service to God through service to His Creation.

This in turn, requires Sikh to work for personal self- improvement, while at the same time striving for social justice for all people. In the closing words of our Ardas,'Sarbatkabhalla' (the well-being of all). It is therefore important that the ethos of our Gurdwara is reflective and supportive of what it means to be a Sikh.

While our religion respects the integrity and equality of all people, and respects and supports the right of freedom of worship, the path of Sikhism has its own discipline and commitment, which requires a distinctive Sikh ethos in our Gurdwara.

An important part of our faith is 'SEWA' an act of 'Selfless Service’ towards others; this takes the form of various initiatives and activities either as an individual or collectively with the community.

Gurdwara activities

The Gurdwara is open to public seven days a week for daily & evening services with the main activities taking place on Sunday. Five key festivals are celebrated periodically throughout the year. Members of all communities are encouraged to learn more about Sikhism and participate in activities as appropriate.

The Gurdwara facilitates Birth, Marriage and funeral services in accordance to both UK civil law and Sikh Rehat Maryada (code of Sikh conduct).

Community activities

The Gurdwara supports the community in facilitating specific activities for the Women, Youth and general activities for the Sikh community with external partners. The Gurdwara facilitates public visits from Schools, Teachers, Police, MP's, NHS and other service providing agencies / organisations and residents. The Gurdwara also supports a number of seminars conferences facilitated by the Police, NHS, Local Authority departments and other service providing agencies / organisations.

The Gurdwara also founded the Doncaster Punjabi Education Board which is a charitable organisation in its own right to develop the language and culture of the Punjab.

Volunteers

The Gurdwara is led by community volunteers from trustees, management committee members to kitchen support staff and is an important resource for the all the Gurdwara's faith and community work.

Principal funding source

The Gurdwara's main source of income is donations. Despite the economic climate it is encouraging to see the generosity of the community.

Statement of public benefit

In planning our activities during the year the management committee has considered the Charity Commissions Guidance on public benefit. The core part of our strategy is community welfare and education, the Gurdwara forms the hub of working with external partners, statutory service providers and other communities to work towards community integration and cohesion by inviting statutory service providers to facilitate seminars and raise awareness of services available to the Sikh community.

Reserves policy

The Charity aims to keep sufficient funds as free reserves to cover 6 months overheads. At the present time, this has not been possible because of the money spent on the Community Centre but the Trustees intend to build the reserves up again to previous levels.

Statement of trustees’ responsibilities

Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity at the year end and of its incoming resources and resources expended during that year. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011.

They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

The trustees declare that they have approved the above report.

It is my responsibility to:

Basis of independent examiner's report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. Sri Guru Kalgidhar Gurdwara Doncaster Notes to the financial statements for the year ended 30 September 2025

1 Accounting policies

These financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost basis and in accordance with the Charities Act 2011 and related Regulations, the Statement of Recommended Practice "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" issued in January 2015 and applicable accounting standards.

As the charity's level of income is below £250,000 the management committee has opted for the accounts to be prepared in a receipts and payment basis except in respect of payments for fixed assets and capital grants. This is in accordance with the Charity Commission guidelines for small charities and is seen as more appropriate for this project.

Incoming resources that may be applied for the charities general purposes are treated as unrestricted incoming resources and are credited to the unrestricted fund.

Where a donation or grant is required to be used for a specific purpose, the amount concerned is treated as restricted income and is credited to the appropriate restricted fund.

The freehold Gurdwara building and Community Centre are stated at cost plus capitalised additions. No depreciation is provided as the trustees consider that this remains a fair reflection of current value.

There were no trustees' remuneration or other benefits for the year ended 30" September 2025 nor for the year ended 30" September 2024.

3 Previous year’s comparison Previous year’s figures have been included where available.
