FINANCIAL REVIEW
a. Revlew of the year
In 2021. the ABN'S inwming resources were £872,0831£784.310 unre51Tieted income. È87.773 to the restricted
A8N Clinical Research Training Felkmship fund}. Total resources expended were £706,76S (£593,845
unrestricted, £112.920 from the A8N CTRF fund) giving a nel surplus before revalu81ion of investment assets of
£165,318.
The income is an increase on 2020. where the bvJgest impact vras seen on the A8N. particularly its meetings
that had lo move to a virtual plarforni. 2021 saw a retum to the autumn meetin9 in-person, and expenses for
future in-person meetings. such as venue deposis.
Staff costs increased due to matemty pay and Costs and the overfapping handover of the outgoin9 and
new Executive Director.
In 2021 the ABN m¢)ved £300.000 into the M&G Chanty Muth. Asset Fund. to help maximise the potential growth
of reserves. Investments bo￿￿ed back in 2021 compared to 2020, contribukn.ng an increase of the ABN'S total
fvnds from £1.423.153 in 2020 to £1,692.535 * lh& end of December 2021.
The ABN Clinical Research Training Felkmship receNed £87.773 in 2021.
In line with financial and legal ad¥￿e, the ABN'S objectNe is lo maintain a reserve of around 1-2 limes its normal
annual expenditure. This is considered a safe margin which woukl allow forwhat had previousty been considered
remote contingencies, such as the financiai faikne of an annud meeting. The impact of the pandemic on events
will be monrtored dosely during 2022.
. b. Re5eNes policy
At 31 Decembef 2021 the Ass￿lation,S unrestrided funds not invested in intangible or taThJible fixed assets
totalled £1.360,300. As noted above, the trustees consider il prudent for the Aswcialion to maintain an available
reserve in the region of 1-2 times its annual expenditure. The rationa￿ has ahvays been thal, should the
Assochglion's income fall Lsnexpectedly. this reserve woukj be used to enable the Association to plan and exeeute
in good order either a reduction in ils aciimties or an improvement in its income stream_ The Association will
continue to review its finanaal c¢)mmitff*nts ￿ the light of the new Cov1￿19 related urKertainties.
