## **THE BARTIMAEUS CHARITABLE TRUST (No:1077876)**

## **ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021**

## _Activities_

The Charity has been run in accordance with the Trust Deed dated 30 June 1999 as amended.

The primary objective of the Charity is to receive donations for the support of the education and care of about visually impaired children at The Sharp Memorial School for the Blind, Rajpur, Dehra Dun, Uttarakhand, India. The School is a registered charitable organisation in India and provides for children mostly from poor backgrounds. The Trustees are satisfied that the school’s aims are for the public benefit.

## _Trustees_

Mr Stephen Aplin Mrs Lara Karat Mrs Ann Todd Mr Richard Todd

Miss Jean Kallmeier

## _Finances_

Income from donors of £43,151 was down 5% compared with the prior year. Unexpected income was a legacy of £30,000. Grants of £66,882 to The Sharp Memorial School, were 6% higher than in the previous year. Due to improved exchange rates the amount of rupees received by the school was 14% more than the previous year.

As anticipated, the remaining investments were sold to fund part of the grants in the year.

Due to higher income, the Charity’s funds increased in the year by £8,957 to £41,664. In future, the Trustees plan to reduce reserves further in order to maintain support for the School.

The Trustees hope that donors will maintain their support for the Charity. They plan to make grants of £55,000 in the year ahead. From now on the level of income will determine the grants made.

The Trustees will continue to make grants to the School, towards the ongoing running costs, and to exhaust the restricted reserves for this purpose in the next year. Thereafter the Charity has no commitment to make grants other than from the available unrestricted reserves, which will comprise solely income received from a faithful group of supporters.

The Charity’s investments were held with Sarasin Investment Funds Limited and the bank account is with The Co-Operative Bank plc.

In the twenty two years of its activities the Charity had total income of £715,000, made grants of £673,000, and now has £42,000 in reserves.

## **ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021 (continued)**

## _Covid 19 impact_

The charity has not been affected directly by the pandemic in the UK. The situation in India resulted in the school ceasing teaching in person from mid 2020. A few children and some staff remain on campus. In May 2021, the superintendent, Mr P M Samuel, died from covid 19. This sad death will mean that responsibility for the school by the already nominated successor will have to take immediate effect. The board and staff will need support to maintain the school in this transitional period.

## _Risk Management_

Each year the trustees consider the risks that the charity faces, and take suitable steps to counter those risks. The primary risk is of reduced income which determines the level of grants which can be made. The secondary risk is in the use of grants. This is covered by regular contact with the School, who provide regular confirmation to the trustees that funds were used for the stated purpose – the care and education of visually impaired children.

## _Supporters_

The Trustees are grateful to individual supporters, churches and charitable trusts supporting the Charity and School by taking an interest, through prayer and in giving. We know that the lives of many blind children are prospering as a result and we welcome new supporters. The Trustees satisfy the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulations.

## _Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities_

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper books of account with respect to the affairs of the Charity. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

This report was approved by the Trustees on 15 May 2021 and signed on their behalf by the chair Trustee:

S Aplin
