Petersham Environment Trust Ltd Trustees' report for the year ended 31 December 2021
Charitable objects
The company was incorporated on 30 July 1999, with Charitable Status, to protect, conserve, maintain and enhance the natural environment and other amenities in Petersham and its environs.
The name of the Trust was changed from Petersham Trust Ltd on 22 October 2012 to reflect its extended objectives more accurately.
Review of activities and achievements
Income in the year totalled £43,990 including £95 donations. Costs totalled £37,796 including a grant award for Civic improvements of £10,000. The Trustees have consistently reviewed the funds of the charity and believe total funds are adequate to maintain its charitable operations.
Chairman's Report for the year ended 31 December 2021
In 2010 the Petersham Trust assigned their lease to National Trust. It is now the responsibility of National Trust to maintain the infrastructure of the meadows and ensure that cows graze on the meadows for the better part of the year. This had been the ultimate objective that Trustees had set out to do when the Petersham Trust was created.
After the transfer of the lease to the National Trust, Trustees decided that they would maintain the Petersham Trust and broaden the objectives to embrace other environmental issues within Ham and Petersham. To better reflect this the name was changed to the Petersham Environment Trust (PET) and the objectives extended to include the natural environment and other amenities in Petersham and its environs.
Trustees of the now PET sit on the Management Committee for the meadows and, as would be expected, we are not in the majority and thus our role is advisory and not executive.
It is possible but very unlikely that the Petersham Trust may at some stage in the future once again have some management responsibility for the Meadows.
Now that the requirement for the PET to maintain the meadows is no longer necessary, we have reverted to our wider objective of enhancing Petersham and its environment. This expenditure has been and is described in the accounts as Civic Improvements.
During the year under review the bi-annual Open Gardens Event was held. In view of the ongoing Covid pandemic the Open Gardens Committee (OGC) decided to hold the event in September for the first time. Notwithstanding, the weather smiled upon us and the day was a great success with the trust receiving £8,000 in proceeds.
Civic Improvements
During the year under review, we have funded improvements to the fencing of Petersham Lodge Woods. We are however mindful that at some stage we may be asked to assist with funding improvements to Petersham Lodge Woods, a request we had acceded to some years ago, and we retain a certain amount of funds to meet this slim but possible likelihood. However, the prospect of being asked to do this is fading.
Trustees were unanimous in wishing to fund a Platinum Jubilee Commemorative plaque to replace the existing partially vandalised emblem. The Trustees are proud to state that a significant portion of the monies raised in the year under review was utilised for this purpose. This magnificent plaque was put in place in time for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022 and will hopefully remain as a suitable tribute to the reign of Her Majesty HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
Trustees are always on the look out for potential civic improvements and welcome suggestions from interested parties.
