A NOTE ON 2023-24
This annual report marks a signtficant shift for Unique Community Charity in itsjourneyto
becoming a stable organisation that has proven its worth wfthin the Iccal community. 2023-24
was a period of growth and careful organisational development. Long-term funding was
secured for salaried roles and key projects, allowingforclearer plannin& more time for co-
design, and the birth of new and innovative ideas. It is worth noting that this timeframe has not
been without its challenges, developing a system for a big£er organisation has taken a trial and
error methodologyto build. The Unique Communty Charity management team is extremely
proud that this small organisation has managed to navigate thistime without losing the passion
it had in 2018 when it was all starting while sustaining the high quality of work it has come to be
known for in Harrow and Brent its key areas of delivery. This report is a testamentto the hard
woth and dedication of this small but mighty team!
- Erina Davidenko, Chal￿ersOn -
We are an ambitious little charitywith empathy in our hearts,
resilience in our bones and teary hope in our eyes.
We have surpassed every goal we set out to achieve
when we started this version of our charity in 2018.

APPROACH
INCLUSIVE ACCESSIBLE, C(>DESIGNED
Most people who find their wayto Unique Communitycome from marginalised backgrounds, often having
experienced significant trauma orsocial isolation. We shape our welcoming community around their unique
needs. The personal stories and experiences of each person are entwined within every aspect of our
programs, inspiring creative sessions that centre their persFErtives. We invest in this approach through
creating a safe, calm and prepared environment. An Arts Therapisvwellbeing Officer supports every single
one of our sessions. We celebrate each individual as thLry are and encourage our community to celebrate each
other. No one is left behind. Our incluswe culture fosters creative exploration. In our small space, our
community is empowered to tackle bigthings and betterfa￿ the world beyond our walls. We encourage
critical thinking through an empathetic lens. Critical thinking involves seekn'n& analysin& and evaluating
multiple perspectives on a complex question or issue, being able to "see" through someone else's eyes is
essential. Our staff and members hold themselves and each other accountable. Ourvalues give them the
vocabulary to do this.
VALUES
We believe that truly inclusive performing arts pro￿sseS should alwaysfeel,. safr, calm, preparedandfvn.

OPEN - Try new things, talk to new people, speak your thoughts, and let your imagination run wild.
KIND- Welcome new people, support and encourage others, and be generous Wlth your ideas.
BOLD- Be ready to explore difficult subjects, challenge yourself to consider other perspectives, and be
brave enough to speak up when something f￿lS wrong.
HOPEFUL- Believe that you have endless OPFJOrtunfties, stsnd ready to gain new skills, and take

FIVE PILLARS OF UNIQUE COMMUNrrws WORK
DARING NEWTHEATRE
We are a theatre-making organisation that Wdlues the process of creating work with children and young
people as much as the final outcomes. We aim to create boundary-pushing work that encourages
participants to explore the world and theMse￿eS in new ways. The qualty of the shows developed at
Unique Community is designed to inspire pride in both participants and the wider community.
socIErALCHANGE
With quality at the forefront, our work aims to spark a ripple effect of positive change in our community
and beyond. Every show we create has a purpose-rooted in whatchildren and young people care about
and what they feel needs to be shared with the world.
MARGINALISED COMMUNMES
We specialise in working with individuals who may not easilyfrc in. Through an intricate structure of
support, we welcome and celebrate diversity, bringingtogether people with varied needs, opinions,
experiences, and values. This depth of collabordtion adds a unique richness to our work.
OPEN DIALOGUE
We foster a space where children and young people can free￿ express themselves, even when others
may disagree. Increasingly, our participants bring strong polrtical and sccietal ideas, and we believe this is
the right place forthem to test and explore those thoughts. Supported by a therapist, our spa
encourages failure as part of the prixess, values debate, and proves that creating something meaningful
with people who hold different views is possible.
MIGRANT-LED
Our identity as a migrant-led organisation is central to who we are. Most of our participants are first- or
second-generation migrants, and we embrace this legacy more than ever. Our lived experience allows us
to offer an understanding and perspective that few others can provide.

ANNUAL THEME
ANNUAL THEME EXPLAINED
Every year we collaborate with participants and the widercommuntyto develop a theme forthe artistic
vearfs season. Themes explore societsl challenges our community is facing and are used as a catalyst for
making original devised work across all projects. The intention is that through the creative process
participants are able to find answersthrough drficult situations.
THEME: MONsfERS, FACING OUR MONStERSSO WE DONT BECOMETHEM
September 2022- July 2023
In 2023 Unique Community will embark on the voyage through fears both big and small, with the hope that
at the end of thejourney we will feel; calmer, less alone, more capable of challenging the behaviours that
fear can breed, and atthe end of it all take away some tangible skills to help us face new fears thereafter.
The world can feel like a scary place right now full of fear.
We spent Autumn exploring this.
Imagine this scenario:
You have a phone coll to make. Not today, you're t￿ busy. Tomorrow is your day off. The next day, iys just
not the right time and even ifyou did, what wouldyou say? The day after that well now iys been tcu long
and itfeels awkward that you haven't already called. Andso you go on with your life trying toforget. It was
just one phone call but now it keeps you up at night. You're anX￿U5. Yourconnections with people are
fvught because there is always a niggle in the Ix7ck ofyour mind, something is incomplete. You want to talk
about it but that would mean unlocking something you (7re desperate to keep shut. You'd have to admityou
failed. Ifsomeone d￿5 ask you about it you double down, you didn't even need to make thatphone call. Or
worse still you say you already have. You're angry, how can people think you didn't? Negative thought
patterns appear, rfyou Can'tfa￿ a simple phone CGII then you must be weak and incapable.
Nowyou have to do everything in yourpowertoshow thatyou are not.
A monster is knrn.
If we don't fa￿ our monsters, we run the risk of becoming them.
This year we will be using the artsto help our communtyface monsters that surround us all. As part of the
process we are interested in understandingthe tipping FX)int, when fear is a useful t￿1 that keeps us safe or
empowers us to take action versus when it turns negative, angry or debilitating.

ANNUAL THEME
THEME: THE AGE OF DIFFERENCE
SepteMber2023-Ju￿2o24
This yearfs theme came out of ourcommuniws wantto learn more about themselves and each other.
We are based in Brent, one of the most drverse boroughs in the UK, and the make-up of our community
reflects this. We want to build empathy & critical thinking skills in children, young people and adults alike
to help them understand their own identities and maybefind more understandingfor others.
It stsrted with a series of questions.
"Am l a minorty?, asked a young person from India during a session. We give everyone the chance to
share their pronouns if they want to-'Why would I do that?, asked a young person who is a refugee and
falls into the category of 'disadvantaged'. She asked this while sitting next to another young person from
Brazil who identifies as gender fluid. 'What is a refug￿?, asked a Ukrainian young person who arrived in
the UK in 2022 fleeingthe war. This is the mak&up of a typical Unique Community rcrfjm, identity matters.
We are living in a time when both self-identrfication and assigning identityto others have become
politicised acts that affert all of us everyday. This year we will be using the arts to help people better
understand themselves first and then using those same skills to better understand others.
Our hope is that this prO￿sS helps us all build beautiful new bridges of kindness.

Independent Examiner's Report on the Accounts
for the year ended 31 March 2024
I r8POrt on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2024, which are sel out on pages 9 10 15.
Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examlner
As Ihe charity tnjstees of the Charity it is you who are responsible for the preparabon of the accounts in accordance with the Charities
Act2011
Having satisfied myself that charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligibl8 for independent examination under
Charities Act 2011, it is my responsibility to..
I report in repsect of my examinailon of Ihe Charivs accounts Carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Acl. In carrying out my
examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the CharitVs commission under Secton 145 {51 (b) of the 2011 Act
Conclusions relating to going concgrn
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes
review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. 11 also includes
consideration of any unusual items or disclosur8s in th8 accounls and s&8king explanations from you as trustees concerning any such
matters. The proceduies undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is
given as lo whether th8 accounts present a 'lrue and fair view, and report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent Examiner's Statèment
In connection with my examination, no mattèr has come to my attention..
Which gives me reasonable cause lo b&lievo that in any material respect the requirements:
1 } accounting records were not kèpl in repset of the Charfty as reqired by Section 130 of the Act; or;
2) the accounts do not accord with those recortds., or
3) the accounts do not comply with th8 applicabl8 requ1￿mentS concerning the fom and content of the accoLsnls
sel out in the Charities l Accounts and reportsl Regulations 2008 other than any requirement Ih8t accounts give a "true and fair
view" which is not a matter ¢onsidered as part of an independent examination.
Corresponding figures
The charity was not subject lo audit in previous period. therefore the opening balances and the corresponding figures are unaudited.
We did not undertaken an Independent examination of the ¢omparalives.
I confirm there are no matters to which your altention should be drawn to enable a proper undestanding to be reached.
