OUR PURPOSE AND ACTIVITIES
The principal aclwities of the charrtable company are to empower young lives and youth voice through participation in
arts programmes that develop their skills and creatNe thinking.

Easlside's vision is a future in which all children and young people's creativty is unloeked, nurtured and valued.

arts. media arts and performing arts).

EaSts￿e runs creative workshops, programmes and participatory projects for children and young people to fulfil our
purpose. Our programme of work also includes career related events and ce￿bratIonS of the children and ytsung
people's work.
Our volunteers
We use volunteers lo provide addib-onal support in our workshops and creatNe projects. Volunteers provide a valuable
contribution in supportj.ng children with their learning and also pro¥￿ing practical hands-on support assisting the artists
in workshop or event settings. The volunteers. Contribut￿n enables us to ensure that each child in volunteer assisted
woikshops has an enhanced leaming experience.
Achievements and Performance
2021 - 2022 was an exciting and dynamic year for Eastside as we emerged from the pandemic and recommenced in
person activities across the country, refined our new d￿lt81 aetNities, took on new large scale programmes and saw
significanl turnover in our core office team.

The ALrtumn tefm of 2021 was a dynamic and Challenging period for society as schoo15 returned in full for the first time
and adapted to life post pandemic. Easlside was sensitive to and aware of the new complexilie5 that society faced

In September 2021 EastsKle bid for and was subsequenlty appointed the new lead agency lo run the Creative Schools
Programme - Creative Schools. London {fom)erly run by Strattord Circus Arts who sadly entefed adminislralion early
in 20221 delivefing work with schools and cultural agencies across East London. Following an initial funding award of
£50,000, EaSts￿e has attracted a further £45.000 investment in the 2021122 per￿d towards the delivery of this
programme. Easlside weknmed Fran Gkotsi as the CrealNe Schools Programme Manager to the core team.
In October, Easlside's appliCat￿ft for Continuty Support funding {CRF3} was also approved. This vital fund was to be
the last Covid related support EaSts￿e received in this period.
With the Autumn return of schocAs in full, EastsKle relaunched its in person schools workshops programme achieving
our highest ts)okin9 figures for Black History Month for 5 years.
We also lorrnalty Launched Eastside Online as our new natDnal online creativity programme for schools
this
programme has Sin￿ been renamed Creativity Live and has attracted participation frc*m schools across the country
who sign in to Eastside's live creativity workshops Wh￿ are live streamed directly into classrooms. The evolution of
this programme is a direct legacy from the pandemic and"reinforees Eastside's nab.onal reach and our innovative use
of digital technology.
On 16th October 2021 Eas15ide launched ils 10th conseculNe BFI Film Academy working with 21 participants laged
16-191 and commissioned 4 original scripts from young screenwriters to be brou9hl lo life through this programme. In
February 2022 the programme concluded with the delivery of an excellent showcase event al the Courthouse Hotel
Cinema in Shoreditch in which represenlalives from BAFTA. former BFI alumni (now filmmakers) and award-winning
film produeers Juliana Kasumu and Alex Shipman presented awards lo the students.
In late November 2021 the Omt¢ron variant of Covid 19 was detected in the UK. The Omicron wave hit its peak in
early January 2022. Schools and Communities tightened their restricts.ons and Easlside once again had lo adapt ils
modes of programme delivery to ensure we were able to continue to deliver our work in a safe manner. Unfortunately.
the reslriclions had a direct impact on sch￿15, willingness to purchase our Spring term school workshop aclwilies.
Alongside that our building revenues through space hires were negalivety affected. These reductions in revenue
Impacted our overall turnover significantty in the first quartei of 2022.
On 11 th January 2022. in 5Plte of the Omicron Wave. Eastside su￿e$S￿￿11Y launched ils new national Spoken word
poetry programme SPOKEN WORD POWER in a socially d15tanced hybrid event at The Criterion Theatre Piccadilly.
James Bridge, the Chief Executive and SecTetary-General James of the UK'S National Commission for UNESCO
IUKNCI opened the event with a powerful speech follciwing which Eastside's ambassador poet, Poetess Jess
alongside the project's lead Artist Jacob Sam-La-Rose took lo the stage alongside young poets from across the UK.

During the pandern￿ Easlside embarked upon a steep leaming curve to embed a new Customer Relationship
Management system to ensure that we effeclivety organised all of our school and participant data effectively to support
the delivery of growth of our crealNity programmes. We have continued to work closely with Color Consultancy to
create the right forms and infraslrvcture to ensure that this new system delivers. Athough the costs of implementation
have been high, we are now beginning to see the rewards.
Thi5 investment alongside strategic marketing initiatives and refreshed webpages are helping Eastside lo connect with
more and more schools across the country. building our reach and reputation as follows.
Through London-wde and nat￿￿w￿le mail campaons with Sprint Educat￿Tr, we have generated
approximately 4.970 new sch¢Jol eontact leads during the period of Sep 2021 - Aug 2022
The CRM system has aided us in qualifying and managing these leads. as well as monitoring how new

film and digital programme manager (Adam Goodwin

(Sept 20211 who left lo lake on a new role al Film London. Around that lime and lo synchronise with COP26 in
Glasgow, Eastside produced and showcased five climate change documentaries with young people and launched
them al the UKELA {UK Environmental Lawyers) annual conference123rd Sept 20211 and at the Conference ol Youth
in Milan 128-31 Oct 20211. Our films were also shown al COP26 fringe events (Nov 2021}. These film5 highlight
Easlside's continued passion and concern for the environment and our desire to take progressive rneasure5 to reduce
our own carbon footprint.
Starting in Febnjary 2022. Easlside delivered a Film and Digital Professional Development Programme in which
group of 11 aspiring filmmakers worked across London land in some cases across the country} to develop their
experience, skills and portfolios supported by Eastside's professional tulors.
Participants worked with induslry leading professionals on group projects. The films they produced investigate
everything from the aquali¢, fin wearing Merfolk of the Sylvesth"an Leisure Centre pool Isnaresbrook East London)
through to combating youth violence and influencing fashion.
Participants worked diligently and professionally on Easts￿e'S commL8sioned projects and with commissioning artisl
Luca Rutherford which involved touring betsveen Newca511e. Stockton, Bradford, CambrKlge and Deplford. The crews
created dwumentsries, social media shorts, inle(views. event captufes and photographic portfolios of Luca's solo
show. You Heard Me, and public art works. You Heard Us.

Participants also worked on Eastside's INe stream workshops which su￿SsfUllY reached hundreds and sometimes
thousands of young people sirnullaneousty in schools across the country and brought out the best in these camera
and sound oteratofs. vision mixefs and set designers.
To support this work Easlside was fortunate to r￿1ve Iwo investmenl grants from the F¢Jundation for Future London.
The first has enabled Eastside to further upgrade rts film and digrtal equipment, ensuring that our students are working
with the very latest technO￿9Y. The second will enabk East$￿& to remodel Ils basement space5 to enhance the
accessibility of the space so that we may include and reach more young people across East London and beyond no
matter what their life circumstances or backgrounds. Easlside will transform its HQ into a fully accessible digital hub fil
for artisliclcrealivity programmes for nat￿navinIemal10nal audiences. We will build flexibly p8rtib.oned basement
spaces yielding one big evenusludio space OR muttiple Irainin9lmeeting spaces as required. These Iransfomiational
building works will be implemented in the 2022123 period and will increase our buikling hire revenues as well as
improve the quality of our programmab'c delivery in particular our film and digital programmes.
In the Spring term of 2022 Easlside continued to deliver its in person Eastside's schools workshops athieving good
results in sprte of the disruption and uncertainty caused by the Omicron variant wave.
On 12th April 2022. Eastside's first ever gala event. April Foolery. hosted by Hugh Dennis and featuring Simon
Brodkin, Poetess Jess and The Showstoppers was held at the UCS theatre raisiThJ £12.961 bringing the total balance
of Easlside's LUNO FUND lo £30.961.

In July 2022, Matilda moved on lo a new role as Head of Programme al Fulure Foundations after 4.5 years with
Easlside. Victoria Aspden will join Easlside in October 2022 as the new General Manager.
Also in July 2022 Felix Andrew {Finance and Operation5 Manager) who served 6 years wrth Easlside moved lo a new
role al the Kiln theatre as Finance Manager_ Louise Alexander was appointed as Finance Associate in July 2022.
We would like lo Ihank Felix and Matilda in particular for Iheir bng and dedicated serV￿e to the Ofganisalion. They
were both instrumental in contributing lo Eastside's exciting growth and development.
Throughout the financial period Eastside continued a new hybnd way of workn'n9. with the majority of staff worked from

was our first new intake of artists since the pandemic.
Eastside continues lo use the new 'blind' recnjitment prcKesses for al recruitment activrties to ensure that we remove

Easlside continues lo work hard to create opportunib.es for those young people who need it most. With respect to our
work with young digital creatives we are aware that the sector they aspire to work within {FilmtrviDigitall has

Only 3% of the film pioduction workforce is from a minority ethnic background. compared with 12.54/
nationally.
Women make up 40% of the workforce and are paKI £3,000 less on average than male counterparts.
Onty 12% of the workforce is from les5 a¢fvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.
Easlside has therefore continued to promote a number of development schemes including the Easlside Studios
professional development programme (amongst other key digital programmesl to provide young aspirant filmmakers
and digital creatives from diverse backgrounds the very best sector netsvorks and opportunrties to develop their
careers beyond our engagemenL These inikn"atives have developed greatty under the leadership of our new Filrn and
Digital Programme Manager.

With our expansion of our dvJital schools workshop offerings (Easfside Online - now rebranded lo Creativity Live) we

and turnover for the period increasing lo pre pandemic levels with a growth in the number of desk leasing companies

Following the commissioning of a full access audit and building suNey. funds have been raised from the Foundation
for Future London lo undertake a remodelling of the basement spaces lo make them more flexible for building users

works elosety to support the maximum engagemenl of all trustees responsible for Eastside's governance through

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Easlside has had lo wotk very hard lo ensure its aciivilies and programmes can fully reemerge following the
caamitous impact of the pandemic on every aspect of Easlside's operations and programme activities.
Thanks to the hard work, determinatson, perseverance and dedication of the serI￿r executive teams, the slaft, the
board and Easlside's partners. the organisalion achieved Income of £691.098. We have posted an operating surplus
of £34.403 12021 deficit £8,376) and have total nel assets, including propety, of £528.427 12021 £494,024).
Excluding depreciation. we wsled a cash surplus of £49,79812021 surplus £24.4711.
Easlside continues lo implement key changes in rts processes. procedures, opefations and aclNilies in order lo
improve the financial viability and overall financial heamh of the organisalion. Andrew Hall (Treasurer} has been
working closely wilh Felix Andrew (General Manager) lo further improve systems and reporting and Felix has been
Cfealin9 new. clearer financial reporting metrics. highlighting trends and year on year growth. for presentation al board
meetings. This ensures that the trustees have the most useful and easily digestible inlormation to guide their decision-
making processes.
All programme teams are emp¢)wered to manage and monilor their own budgets, with regular check-ins and reports'ng
to senior management lo ensure that programme budgets and margins are being mel All staff understand that strong
rinancial controls are key to maintaining the growth ol their indiv￿ual Pfogfammes and the widef organisalion.

Outside of staff focussed fundraising efforts, indNidual gNing remains on the low side al Easlside and the refreshed
Iruslee board will continue lo develop ils thinking around growing this income stream. The board welcomed the
success of the inaugural April Foolery event (April 2022) and is looking forward to the next fundraising gala which will
take place al The Criterion Theatre in the Wesl End in Apnl 2023 where revenue polenbal will be greater.
Easlside maintains Suff￿lent reseNes lo cover any unexpected costs or unfoieseen staffing costs that have not been
considered in the normal course of business for the charity. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the trustees have agreed
that our standard reserves policy of 3 months of support costs - wh￿h equales to £59,000 - can be reset lo a minimum
baseline of £35.000 to be able lo commit both any designated fijnds and the balance of the general funds to
SUP5)orting the organisation through this challenging situation.
Risk Managofflent
The Board of trustees has considered the major risks to which the charity is exposed and has reviewed these risks
and established systems and procedures lo manage them. A risk register Is reviewed regularly al boaid meetings lo
assess the major risks faced by the charity and lo ensure that the. Iwstees (acting as directors of the charitable
companyl have a Sound knowledge of the charity and are in an informed posrtion regardirMJ its operations.
Principal Fundlng Sources
The main funding sources for the charty are grants from Publ￿ bodies, trusts. foundations, charitabbe organisations,
local aulhorilies. contact income frorn schools, rental income from trading subsKliary plus donations from individuals.
Reserves Policy
The undesignaled liquid reserves he￿ by the charity are £42,22712021 £81.4241.
The charitable company mainlains a reserve level of desKJnaled fvnds to cover any unforeseen costs or disruption to
the business The designated funds are to cover the key operational factors of the charitable company which include
building maintenan￿, equipment maintenance and ￿ infrastructure. staff conb'ngency fund and The Lund fund.
In the trustees. view, the reserves should provhde the charity wrth adequate financial stability and the means for it lo
meet ils charitable objecbves for the foreseeable future. The trustees propose to work towards maintaining the
charity's reserves at a level which is at least equivalent to three months. support costs {£59kl. The Iruslees recognise
that the 2021122 period was a challenging year gÈven Ihe cessalion of pandern￿-re1aIed support, the impact ol the
Omicron variant and the cancellation of a key fundrai51ng event due to ill health of a.lead participant all of which led to
decreased income and increased usage of liquid reserve5 in that period. Nonethele55, the board are comfortable with
urrenl reserves levels and will work towards elevating these in the 2022123 period. The trustees review the amount
of reserves that are required lo ensure that they are adequate lo fulfil the charity's continuing obligations on a lermly
basis al their board meetings_
As noted in the firtanC￿l review, the trustees will continue to review reserves levels as we seek to mitigate the impact
of Covid-19 and should il be required will reduce the absolute minimum level to £35.000 to ensure that the charity can
operate effectively whilst we transition out of Ihe pandemic.
Investment Policy
Surplus funds are held in a deposit fund account with the Charities Official Investment Fund ICOIF}. Interest is paid
quarterly without deduction of tax and is transferred directly to the chairtable company to defray charitable
expenditure.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
Easiside's CEO l Artistic Director. along with full participation and contribution from the board and staff teams, have
delivered a new organisalional strategy and business plan which lakes the place of the 'Unlocking Creative Potential,
business plan of 2018-2022 and leads us through until 2023. This new plan clearly a￿'CUlate5 the organisalion's
vision. mi5sKsn. aims and values as well as laying out SMART objectives and targets for the organisation. comprising
new business developmenvschools programmelfilm and duital pfogramme slralegies.
Through our efforts lo deliver this new business plan we will take our leaming forward in order lo reach even wider
pools of children al￿ young people. We will colllinue to focus our efforts into areas where we can make the most
impact and where our unique offer can make the biggesl difference lo the lives of the young people that we engage
with. The staff team is operating effectivety wrthin the newly arranged departmental structure (Schools Programmes
and Film aiid DKJital Programmes} and key appointments have been made to support the work of these departments.
Easlside will now work lowards growing the scale and impacl of our work with schools and enhancing our reach
digitslly and online.
STRUCTURE GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
The organisalion is a charitable company limited by guarantee. incorporated on 8th July 1998 and registered as a
charity on 3rd June 1999. Registered Charity number 1077192.
The charitable company was estsblished under a Memorandum of Ass(￿lat￿n, which established the objects and
powers of the charitable company and 15 governed by its Articles of Associats"on.
Recruitment and appointment of Trustees
The Oirectors of the organisation are also the charity trustees for the purposes of charity law. New trustees will be
eleeled by existing trustees on the board and the CEO l Artisttc Director in line with revised governance standard5 in
which key areas and skill gaps are idents.fied and addressed.
Trustee posts are advertlsed through truslee finders and on the website. Potential InJstee5 whose profile fills skills
gaps are then invited to meet wtth trustees. the CEO l Arb"5bo Director and senior rnanagemerbl team in order to
delemine whether they afe suitable to join the board after which they are asked lo shadow the board. One third of the
directors of the charitable company (who act a5 the council of trustees for the charity) retire every yeai.
The trustees have no beneficial interest in the Company other than as members. The tnjstees are also the direclofs of
the company. All of the trustees are members of the cnmpany and guarantee to contribute £1 in event of winding up.

Basis of preparation of accounts
The financial statements of the Charitab￿ company, wh￿h 1$ a public benefft under FRS 102, have been

Statement of Recommended PraCt￿e applicable to chant￿5 preparing their financial statements in accordance
with the Financial Reporting Standard appI￿able in the UK and Republic of Ireland IFRS 102} leffeclive 1
January 20191,. Financial Reporting Standard 102 The Finanryal Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and
Republ￿ of Ireland. and the Companie5 Act 20(￿.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the Charity. Monetary
amounts in these finaneial statements are rounded to the nearest £.
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recogni5ed at
cost or transaction value unless otherwise slated in the relevant nolels) lo these financial slatemenls.
Reportlng period
The financial statements were for the period 151 September 2021 to 31st August 2022 and that this period's
financial statements {including the reL4ted notes) are not Comparab￿ to prior year statements. which were lor
an extended period of 1A April 2020 to 31 Y August 2021. The accounting period was extended in the prior
year, lo align better wth school temi limes. allowing Eastside lo report lermty on their activilEs.
Group accounts exemption
The charity has taken advantage of the exemption under section 399 of the Companies Act 2￿6 not lo
prepare consolidated aeeounts. on the basis that the group of which this is Ihe parent qualifies as a small
group. The financial statements present inf0m￿t￿n about the charity as an individual entity and not about ils
group.
Preparation of accounts on a going concem basis
The charity's Financial Statements shows a nel surplus of £34,403 (2021
net deficit of £8,376) for the year
and free reserves of £42,227 12021 £81.424). The trustees are of the view that the chaiity has adequate
reserves and that current and future cash flows are sufficientty strong to operate effectively as a going
concern.
Income Trcognition
All income is included in the statement of financial aclivilies when Ihe charity is legalty entitled lo it. receipt is
probable and the amount can be measured with suftKienl reliability.
Grant income
Grants are credited lo Ihe slatemenl of financial aclivibes when the charity 15 entitled lo the funds. Income is
only deferred where there are lime constraints imposed by the donor or if the funding is performance related.

Donatlons and legacles
Donations are recognised in the period in which they are received. Legacy income is recognised when the
charity's entitlement is judged to be probable and where the amount can be reliably measured.
Contract Income
Income from charitable aclNilies include income recognised as earned {as the related goods and services are
provided) under contract.
Investment income
Investment income 15 included when receivable.
Donated services and facilities
Donated professional seryices and donated faciltties are recogni5ed as incorne when the charity has control
over the item, any conditions associated with the donated item have been mel, the receipt of economic benefit
from the use by the charity of the itern is probable and that economic benefit can be measured reliably. In
accordance with the Charities SORP IFRS 1021. the general volunleef time is not reco9nised and refers to the
trustees. annual report for more informalion about their contribution.
On receipt, doriated professional sep4ices and donated facilit￿S are recognised on the basis of the value of the
gift to the charity which is the amount the charity would have been willing lo pay to obtain services or facilities
of equivalent economic benefft on the open markel a corresponding amount is then reco9nised in expenditure
in the period of receipt.
ExpendituTr recognition and irrecoverable VAT
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation lo make a payment lo a third party, it
is probable that settlement will be required and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

Allocation of support costs
Support COSts are those fvnclions that assist the work of the charity but do not directly undertake charitable
activilies. Support costs include back office costs, finance, personnel. payroll and governance costs which
support the charity's programmes and acb"vits"es. These Costs have been allocated between cost of raising
funds and expenditure on charitable aclivilies. The basis on which support costs have been allocaleis are sel
out in note 8.
Fund accounting
Unreslricled funds are available to spend on xtivities that further any of the purrxJse5 of charity
Designated funds are unrestficted funds of the charity which the trustees have decided al their diseretion to
sel aside lo use for a specific purpose.
Reslricled funds are donations which the donor has specffjed are lo be solely used for particular areas of the
charity's work or for Specif￿ projects being undertaken by the charrty.

Fixed asset investments are stated at cost less provision for diminution in value.
1.12 Debtors
Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered.
Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid nel of any trade discounts due.
1.13 Cash at bank and in hand
Cash at bank and in hand includes cash and short lemi cash dewsils.
1.14 Creditors and provisions
Creditor5 and provisions are recognised where the Charity has a Present obligation resulting from a past event
that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can
be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are norrnalty recognised at their selllement
amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

The charity only has financial assets and financial liabilibes of a kind that qualify as basic financial instrurnenls.
Basic financial instruments are inilialty recognised al Iransa¢lion value and subsequently measured at their
selllement value with the eXCept￿n of bank loans which are subsequentty measured at amortised cost using
the effective interest rnelhod.
1.16 Pension
The charity operates a defined contribution pension scheme on behalf of its employees. Contributions ale
charged lo the Statement of Financial Activities in the period in which they are payable. The assets of the
scheme are held separately ftom those of the charity in an independently administered fund.
1.17 Taxation
The charity is a registered charty and. therefore, rs not liable for Income Tax OT Corporalron Tax on income
deiived frorn ils charitable activities, as it falls within the variou5 exemption5 available to reglstered charities.
1.18 Judgement and key sources of estimation uncertainty
In the application of the company's accounting policies. the charty is required to make judgments, estimates
and assumptsons about the carying amounl of assets and liabilities that are not ieadily apparent froffl other
sources. The Èstimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factor5 that
are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates. The estimate5 and undertying
assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the
period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affecls only that period, or in the period of the
revision and future periods where the revision affecls both current and future perK)ds.

Oescription, nature and purpose of unrestricted funds:
General funds: General fund represents furmls available to spend at the discretion of the tnjstees after
allowing for all Ihe designated funds.
Designated Funds
The Lund Fund.. The Lund Fund is a desrgnated reserve that can be drawn on by executive staff or by the
programming staff, via a written application lo the trustees. to seed or match fund a project application or to
fijlly fund a new programme of OU￿aCh for children and young people aged 5-25 acTQSS the country. It is
named after David Lund, an English teacher with a pa55ion for the arts, who left a sum in his viill to be
assigned to organisalions that work in this area, and Eastside was selected by the estate to receive £10,000.
This initial bequest enabled Eastside to effectivety fundraise for and deliver I know I wish I will. a national
spoken word poetry programme {2019-20). This fund is a principal focus of key individual giving and
¢orporate fundraising campaigns Ihat are nol tied to a Specif￿ project.
Building rnaintenance fund:
Represents monies desi9nated by the trustees lowaids unforeseen
expenditure required on the building to ensure that the operab.on can continue from the premises. Easlside
undertook an extensive building refvrbishmenl programme durin9 the year to modernise and maintsin the
property to ensure fil for purpose for the future plans of EastsKIe.
The capital equipment fund:
Represents monies designated by the trustees towards unfoieseen
expenditure required lo maintain the operation of the business in the event of the existing equipment
becoming obsolete. Wlh the eslablishmenl of the trading affn that will be taking responsibility for the purchase
and maintenance of equipment and IT for the organisation and the buikling.
The staff contin9ency fund: Represents monies designated by the trustees lo cover any exceptional costs
or unforeseen staffing cost that has not been considered in the normal course of business for the charity.

RELATED PARTY TRANSACTIONS
During the year, the charity received £51,000 (2021- £8.500} from Eastside Resource Management Ltd, a
wholly owned subsidiary. for rent and Servi￿ charge and £2.177 towards staff recharges. The Charity made
grants to the trading arm Easlside Resource Management of £38,55812021 £62.8991 in the current year. Al
the balance sheet dale, the charity is owed £27.205 {2021- £12.6381 by the trading subsidiary.
Laura Mariah Hemian (trustee and employee al Adobe} made total donalKins of £4.531 during the year,
consisting of a personal donab.on of £250 al the April Foolery event la5 part of the Lund Fund) and additional
donations lolalling £4.281 were received via Adobe's giving portal (Benevityl lo reflect Lauia's time on the
board plus additional donalK)ns to offer genefal support to EaslsKIe.
