Acting Chair Report 2022 - 2023 : (Group Scout Leader) Email: gsl@3rdbramshill.org
The 3[rd] Bramshill Group continues to flourish, and it is thanks to the commitment of the Leaders that provide a fulfilling programme that is enjoyed by all.
Our executive committee exists to support our Leaders and is made up from a mix of willing volunteers both uniform and non-uniform. We discuss a range of topics, from running the Group, building maintenance, fundraising and not to mention the activities that Beavers, Cubs and Scouts take part in.
We really do need more parental involvement on our Exec Committee to help shape the Group and map out the way forward.,
There's lots of ways you can get more involved with Scouts as a parent, a carer or a family member. From helping out occasionally on a parent/carer rota or playing a vital role behind the scenes, to stepping up as a regular volunteer, our opportunities are as varied as you.
We’re talking tidy uppers and tea makers, session planners and fire builders, fundraisers and treasurers, and all-round team players to support our young people.
The good news is that you shape what you do and the time you have to give. Scouts happens when a lot of us give a little (and no, you don’t have to be a Scout or outdoors expert to volunteer).
What to expect
-
A warm welcome
-
Flexibility to get involved in a way that works for you
-
Easy access to training and resources online
-
Friendly ongoing support from local volunteers
No two weeks are the same, but the impact you make is always great.
Make a real difference, speak to me or any other Leader and volunteer today.
And so in summary the 3[rd] Bramshill Scout Group exists because of the time that the leaders give. They do not get paid for their time and most of them continue on to support long after their children pass through the organisation. We continue to need more parent helpers. If you are able to spare a few evenings over the year, please let your leader know. Your help in assisting at even a few sessions would be much appreciated. It might even make the difference between an evening being able to go ahead or not.

In addition, fundraising efforts, which help subside the activities we do, depends on the support we receive from you. An hour’s support makes a massive difference. Please, please think about helping us to provide your children with the best possible experience.

Hall Manager Report 2022-2023
The Hall is utilised every day of the week by the 3rd Bramshill Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who hold their meetings in the hall throughout the weekday afternoons and evenings. In addition Yateley Explorers, 1st Yateley Rainbows, 7th Yateley Brownies, TEDS dance school and Gateway Fellowship also use/hire the facilities during the weekday evenings and weekends.
The hall is also available for hire to the public / other clubs for events and meetings. There is availability for the hall to be hired during school hours and school holidays, and on the 4[th] of May we are to host the local elections. There is always a number of hires to the public and continues to be a favourite for children’s parties and other family events.
We continually make improvements to the lodge facilities and the groups make good use of the not so new fenced area to the rear of the Lodge both throughout the summer and winter months as a youth are a hardy bunch.

Group Scout Leader (GSL) Report 2022 - 2023
Firstly, thank you all for joining us this evening and taking this opportunity to meet the Leaders and Committee Members of the 3rd Bramshill Scout Group and find out a little about Scouting. The formal part of this evening is the Annual General Meeting of the Group Council. This is the electoral body which manages the Group’s affairs and raises funds to support the Scouting activities of our Group. Without them any group fails to function.
The Scout Leaders’ main function is to run the Scouting programme for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and we are always pleased to receive offers of help. The AGM, however, is not your only opportunity to meet the Leaders and Committee Members; you are more than welcome to come along to any of our meetings and witness first-hand the activities your sons or daughters are involved in. You never know you might enjoy it yourself!
On our census return on the 31[st] January I recorded 118 youths on our books, a 66%/24% male to female split so almost a quarter of our youth members are girls. I would say that is brilliant considering you have Guides, Brownies and Rainbows in Yateley who have no male members. Scouting does remain healthy and to keep up with the demand we have 3 Beaver Colonies, 2 Cub Packs and 1 Scout Troop. However with a Group of our size comes new challenges including recruiting new leaders. If you would like to help or become a leader, please speak to me or any other leader.
With having 2 Cub Packs there is the potential that a large number of Cubs will move onto our single Scout Troop. There is no limit set by the Scout Association on Troop size but there is however a practical limit where we can deliver and sustain a quality programme.
Our three Beaver Colonies (2 on Tuesday and 1 on Wednesday) are run by Julie PhillipsStafford (Mole), Paul Woodford (Squirrel) and Wayne Hooper (Falcon). On Tuesday for the Forest Colony, Julie (Mole) is assisted by Paul (Squirrel), James (Wolf) and Emma (Hedgehog). Squirrel runs the other Tuesday Colony; Copse and he is assisted by Mole. Our Wednesday Colony, Woodlands is run by Wayne Hooper (Falcon) and he is assisted by Mole and Jude as a Sectional assistant.
Akela Ian runs the Tuesday Cub Pack with the support of the Tuesday Cub Scout Leaders and Sectional Assistants Verity Ross, Adam Buttery, Alison Slater and Kirsty Small.
I am sorry to report that Nick Cutbill has had to step down as Akela of the Thursday Pack due to the pressure of work with his new job. He was assisted on a regular weekly basis by Rob Joyner and Holly Collen as Sectional Assistants with additional help being provided by Paul and Sam from Scouts.
Help at Cubs is also provided by Chris Cole (Baggy) in his role as AGSL(Cubs)

So at the Scout Troop we have Paul Ruddick as our Scout Leader fondly known as Skip. Chris Mead retains an Assistant Scout Leader role within the troop having become Yateley Explorers Leader so good links to both groups there. Help at Scouts is provided by Alastair Swaffer in his role as AGSL(Scouts), Sam Puttock (ASL) and Ed Dallas and Ian Bateman as Sectional Assistants Scouts
I would like to thank them all on your behalf for all their efforts particularly as they have had to undergo training themselves.
Enjoy the evening! Ray Bunce - Group Scout Leader
Beaver Report 2021 – 2022
We have had another busy year at Beavers doing many activities both in and out of our lodge.
We’ve learnt emergency aid from a local paramedic, been pond dipping with the Yateley Common rangers, looked for stars and planets, cooked, rode our bikes, made paper airplanes and earned lots of badges.
We had a well-attended camp last May where we experienced caving and crabbing as well as Chef Clare’s plentiful food and lots of cake!
All three colonies are well attended and our waiting list is as long as ever with the youngest on it just 4 months old.
Our Beaver leadership team has remained unchanged again this year and I give much thanks to Squirrel, Hedgehog, Wolf, Fox and Falcon for all their support and ideas which keep our Beavers happy and engaged.
Here’s to another fun year.

Cub Pack Report for Tuesday & Thursday Packs 2022 - 2023
Another funpacked year. Both Packs continue to evolve with interesting activities and programme ideas coming from both the leaders and the Cubs themselves. Tuesday numbers are around 16 and Thursday are around 27.
Cubs activities included environmental conservation, cycling, Our Skills challenge, animal carer, healthy eating, problem solving activities, an evening on books with Mary Rosambeau (a local author of children’s books), and the home help badge. It was great to see and hear about some of the hobbies and collections our cubs are getting involved in outside of Cubs. Special thanks to Mary and to Greg who came and talked about astronomy and showed us some of his telescopes and amazing photos of space that he has taken.
Camp in 2022 was at Cricket Camp and was themed on the Jubilee. It was enjoyed by all who attended. This year we are planning to go to Walter Davies Scout Camp in Stoke Poges. We are busy putting together the programme for this and currently have about 17 Cubs booked to attend. There is still space to take some more. Activities are likely to include shooting, archery, bushcraft, bouldering wall, assault course and a mini gun run, along with the ever popular campfire.
Some of our Cubs attend our archery and shooting clubs and also take part in kayaking at Hawley Lake.
A big thank you must go to the leadership team; for Tuesday that is Alison (Raksha), Verity (Rama), Kirsty (Jacala), Adam and our young leader Charlotte; and for Thursday that is Rob (Kaa), Richard (Baloo), Holly (Hathi), Sam (Mang), Gemma (Grey) and young leaders Arwen, Jason and Charlie. We are also always thankful for the ongoing support of Skip and Baggie.
We were sorry to say goodbye to Nick (Akela Thursday) who has a very busy year ahead but hope that we may see him back in the future. In the meantime we have a vacancy for a new Akela Thursday if anyone is interested.
If any parent can spare a few hours every few weeks on a Thursday or a Tuesday evening, please speak to one of the Leadership team.

Scout Report 2022 – 2023
The troop is a very healthy size at 40 scouts, 1 young leader and 7 adult leaders.
I would like to say a parcular thank you to all the adult volunteers who give up their me to help with the troop, without you it would not be possible.
In no order many thanks to – Ed, Ian, Luke, Sam, Alastair, Ray, Chris.
We have had several youth members achieve their Gold Award and fully expect this trend to connue going forwards!!
We have been on camp several mes this year – Cricket Camp in May 2022, where we Kayaked on the Hamble and did a whole load of bushcra acvies.
climbing and of course a walk or two.
We have also stayed overnight at Buster Iron Age Farm where the Scouts slept overnight in the Saxon Longhouse
Winter Camp in February at Bears Rails in Windsor Great Park was excellent. It was cold and a bit misty in the mornings but good firewood processing by keen scouts kept us warm. We walked to the camp from Virginia Water, and had an great week exploring the area, campfire cooked our food and had visit to the Castle, the local water slides at the swimming pool and ate pizza by the river.
We have also aended; the Archery compeon and the district night escape this year.
Locally we have been working on environmental projects, by tending and planng trees and helping in laying seeds on the local verges in conjuncon with a local project.
Some of the highlights of the term’s acvies have included raing, lots of cooking, hiking, DIY, games, Tomahawk throwing and of course lots of campfires and marshmallows to menon but few of the things we have done this year.
We have lots more camps planned for this Summer and other acvies going forward, we could always use more help to give the Scouts the best experience we can.
Please let me know if you are interested in helping in any way.

3[rd] Bramshill Air Rifle & Pistol Shooting Club Report 2022-2023
As you will be aware our Club now meets in blocks alternating with our archery club at our Lodge on Fridays during term times between 7.30pm and 9pm. We have a small core of regular younger shooters who continue to improve their skill levels and we are always pleased to welcome new members. The club is open to all Group members and cost £1 per session to cover the consumables.
Unfortunately, we haven't been able to enter any competitions last year due to age restrictions on our young shooters, but our expectations must remain high for the future. Hampshire Scouts has an excellent history in the sport and there a number of Hampshire Scouts that shoot nationally.
We are fortunate to have 4 qualified Range Officers/Instructors which has enabled us to run these sessions and I would like to thank them all for all their efforts, particularly as they have had to undergo training themselves. So that is Ian Puttock, Julie Phillips-Stafford, Paul Ruddick and myself.

3[rd] Bramshill Archery Club Report 2022 – 2023
Our Archery Club has been running since September 2016. We currently have four qualified instructors within the Group.
We run on Fridays between 7.30pm and 9pm (sometimes taking a break for our shooting club). Numbers were reasonable last half term and both our Cubs and Scouts did well in the District Competition.
The sessions allow some time for coaching and an opportunity to improve on technique and scores as well as playing a variety of games including the pizza game, noughts and crosses and the numbers game. We have also used balloons and playing cards as targets.
It has been great to see both the improvement in technique and scores as the weeks go by. We would like to see a few more regularly attending (it only costs £1 a session).

3[rd] Bramshill Cub & Scout ‘Kayak & Canoe Club’ - AGM Report 2022- 2023
We were able to offer kayaking on both a Monday and Friday evening from just after Easter last Year until the summer break. We had around 20 young people taking part in both kayaking and paddle boarding at Hawley Lake. I am sure it was enjoyed by all who took part.
In order to offer the opportunity of regular kayaking & canoeing to our ever-increasing numbers of Cubs and Scouts, a team of ‘qualified adults’ is needed; without these dedicated Leaders and Parents we could not run the activities. Please do let us know if you can help in any way.
We hope to start the 2023 season immediately after the Easter holidays and are looking forward to sunny evenings at Hawley.
Thanks must go to the kayak team of James, Ray, Paul, Ian Br, Adrian, Alison and our parent helpers.
