Chair’s Report
Welcome to A.P.P.L.E.’s 2023 Annual Report.
This past year A.P.P.L.E. has been able to run our full programme, made up of our core projects:
-
Food Programme & Eating Together
-
Art & Creative Projects
-
Sport & Outdoor Play
-
Youth, and Family Support
A.P.P.L.E. continues to provide a safe, nurturing place for children and young people to play, meet their friends and take part in lots of activities.
We see on average 100 children and young people a week in term time at our out-of-school sessions and 200+ a week in the school holidays.
One of our primary aims over this past year has been to re-establish ‘old school’ A.P.P.L.E. after the disruption of Covid and the ongoing cost of living crisis: playing out, eating together, making stuff, going places and being with friends.
We work to make A.P.P.L.E. welcoming, accepting and easy to be part of. The content of the sessions for children and young people are planned to be engaging and assist in building confidence, developing life skills, enhance education and work opportunities. The broad aims this year have been:
To develop the provision for the youth group
-
More dedicated time - Friday Youth is firmly established after the disruption of Covid. This cohort of young people is particularly close knit. They come from all the local high schools and from all over Acton. A.P.P.L.E is their contact place.
-
More youth specific activities - “I enjoy the activities, especially table tennis. I enjoy being with my friends and I enjoy talking to the staff here" BR, 12
3
-
The youth taking on more responsibility for their time at A.P.P.L.E., for example, designing projects, planning and prepping trips. The youth group organised a trip to Oxygen in the Easter holiday. The planning being part of the Award scheme.
-
Developing the AAA award scheme and Jack Petchey Awards - We have updated the whole scheme over the past year and it is now just beginning to get properly established.
-
Encouraging young people to engage in identifying and planning towards their goals. For example, a 13-year-old girl wants to be an actress. She is very certain about this but has no opportunities to try this out. We are engaged in an ongoing conversation about what is possible, and how to take the next step.
-
To provide a safe space where the young people feel able to discuss and address their individual issues. For example, this was a worry: "I worry that I don't fit in, and people think I'm weird. I worry about what people think about me" and now the same young person says this, "I like to come to A.P.P.L.E. because it's very fun and welcoming. I can be myself and it feels like home here. Youth night has helped me to open up and talk to people about my problems. I talk to more to people than before, and I can express myself like I always wanted to. Before I was afraid of people not liking that side of me."
For our primary school age group
-
To offer as wide a range of activities as we can, particularly those that may not be available in school, for example large scale artwork.
-
To concentrate on physical activities , group games, crazy activities, for example, Monster Tug-of-war. This has been to boost fitness and wellbeing after Covid, to drive up energy levels and promote positive feelings and hope.
-
To start the year 5/6 children attending cooking and art club on starter AAA awards . This generates energy and enthusiasm for learning and achieving in practical, fun ways out-of-school. This is a first step for many children, particularly those who find school and academic work difficult (see the current stress levels around the SATs)
-
To make sure we are supporting those children with additional social and learning needs, particularly those not identified in school. There are an increasing number of children going unsupported who clearly require extra help. “I think it is amazing what they do with the kid. My child enjoys a lot when we come. He has ADHD and they help him so much” Nadia (parent)
For families
-
Ensuring those families who need support with food can access food packs from A.P.P.L.E. - “Grateful for food for the family as shopping difficult especially with disability and kids with needs” Sonia (parent)
-
To extend the activities on offer to include younger children but not to the detriment of our older children and young people. This was a challenge at first. But we have now acquired materials and equipment for younger children and have added suitable art activities.
4
There are benefits - we have more parents involved and willing to help. Giving the youth dedicated time has balanced the programme out to meet all our user groups.
We have progressed in all the areas outlined above.
It feels as if we are back on track after the disruption of the past few years. It was not as simple as just opening up again. The finances were very difficult which made planning difficult. And the groups felt very fragmented. It has taken this past year for us to gel back together and become properly A.P.P.L.E again.
The benefits for the children and young people have been:
-
confidence gained through achievement; they acquire skills from taking part in the activities.
-
calm and reassurance gained by being in a safe supportive environment where they can be themselves and make choices for themselves.
-
improved physical wellbeing through taking part in the many sports, games, and outdoor play activities.
-
life and work skills gained through learning to cook, garden, do DIY, take part in workday sessions, lead activities.
-
friendships gained through the making of new friends through activities outside their home or school group.
-
solace and comfort gained from friends and staff in an atmosphere of acceptance and support.
The present youth group have become tight knit and very supportive of each other over the past year.
The key achievements over this past year have been:
-
The coming together of this present cohort of young people. The core of this group range in age from 12 - 15, they attend all different high schools and come from all over Acton. They have become one of the closest groups A.P.P.L.E have had attend. They are kind, and supportive of each other.
-
The enthusiasm. This group take part in many of the activities. They have become active in planning activities for Friday youth. For example, ‘Come Dine with Me’ - an event over three Friday sessions in Feb and March, where teams cooked a main course and dessert for their peers and prepared an entertainment, for example Karaoke.
-
The residential trip. It was on this trip that the group really came together. They were amazingly supportive of each other when encountering challenging and often scary activities. This bonding has extended to the whole group including to those who did not go on the trip and those who have started attending since.
5
-
Trip to Littlehampton. A very good day although the weather could have been better. A proper seaside day. The children played on the beach, messed about in the water, built sandcastles, caught crabs, and had a picnic.
-
The establishment of the new AAA awards scheme . We now have 8 categories of awards – we have arts & cooking awards aimed at year 5/6. These awards are important as they are often a first step in self-development. They introduce to children and young people, who may not be doing well at school, a means of gaining recognition for accomplishments. Self-confidence comes from small achievable goals. 6 of our young people have gone on to achieve Jack Petchy Awards.
. The Summer Celebration Party - 20 years in the ARTBLOCK
A.P.P.L.E held a summer party on Saturday June 24[th] to celebrate being in the ARTBLOCK for 20 years.
We had a great afternoon. There were lots of games, a chess competition, archery, a beauty tent with stick on tattoos, cake decorating, mask making and lots of food.
The new Ealing Mayor, Cllr Hitesh Tailor attended. We think he had a good afternoon as we heard soon after we became one of the mayor’s chosen charities for the coming year.
London Garden Scheme – Community Gardens Award
We came 3[rd] in this year’s London Garden Scheme Awards in the community garden category which is a fabulous achievement.
6
Our food programme goals have all been successfully accomplished and, in many instances, surpassed. It has been at the core of our programme for many years and its importance has only increased over that time. Research shows that healthy eating has lifelong health benefits and in the short-term it can tackle issues with tooth decay and obesity. We have continually offered a healthy main course and dessert at every session, focusing on reducing sugar and meat consumption and eating more vegetables. Most of our meals are vegetarian, and young people are always heavily involved in the preparation of these dishes.
This participation is further encouraged through the AAA’s they can receive for cooking which has been a successful initiative, with over 20 children and young people achieving AAA’s in cooking, and many more in progress.
A group of 9 young people also ran an “A.P.P.L.E. Come Dine with me” event over three Friday sessions in Feb/March, where teams cooked a main course and dessert for their peers, who each gave a score out of 10 for presentation, hosting, and cooking. “At youth night I've learnt how to cook. For example, I learnt how to make homemade burgers and Eton Mess. I've also learnt how to work as a team during Come Dine with Me” Abubakar, 12
Young people have also taken the lead in organising a number of other events including an
Italian-themed day, a Mexican-themed day, and a cake stall to raise funds for the new kitchen. Young people took the lead in the entirety of the organisation of these events, including budgeting, time management, decorating, and of course preparing the dishes. Feedback from cooking events has been hugely positive, with some of our young people showing a greater interest in how specific meals are prepared, and in cooking from scratch.
Our weekly cooking club with the year 5 children at East Acton Primary School, has also had the same effect. Children are motivated to take a greater interest in cooking and healthy eating, and to try new foods, (many were initially much pickier eaters, and hesitant to try any foods unknown to them). Each child has a notebook recording all the recipes they have which they can then replicate at home. We have conducted over 30 sessions with this group.
7
A.P.P.L.E. actively encourages young people to develop their understanding of where their food comes from and take part in growing fresh fruit and vegetables in the garden. They can then use the produce they have grown to prepare meals for themselves and their peers.
We have continued to open as a food bank for 23 local families struggling due to food insecurity. The number of families we have supported has more than doubled in the last few months, due mostly to the cost-of-living crisis. Feedback from the support offered has been incredibly positive, and we hope to continue to support these struggling families and more moving forward.
Our family programme has continued to run successfully and has grown substantially. We continue to provide regular open-access sessions to all local families on Tuesdays after-school, Saturdays, and during school holidays.
Each session includes cooking activities, unique arts and crafts such as decorating Mexican sugar skulls and creating jungle animals, sports, gardening, DIY and more.
The age range we support has grown noticeably. While previously, we solely catered to young people aged 8 to 16, we are finding more and more under 8’s and parents joining us on a weekly basis. Parents are becoming an active part of A.P.P.L.E. helping out whenever possible with baking, setting up and clearing at the end of the day.
In the summer we ran a hugely popular seaside trip to Littlehampton for families, with a total of 54 children and parents attending. For most children, this was the only time they had spent away from London during the summer, and for one of our new refugee families, this was a first-time experience.
As well as this, we conducted a number of community events throughout the summer holiday including a beach party, a summer party, a Halloween party and a Christmas party, all of which have had a large turnout and excellent feedback.
To cater to our growing group of 4-8 year olds we have acquired some smaller outdoor toys including a handful of smaller bikes.
8
The Kitchen Hub Project has been the big event of the year. Our small, very well used, and tired kitchen has served us well. But the need for a larger space became overwhelming. We have wanted to create a bigger, better equipped kitchen for such a long time.
We started planning in January – first to find the funding and then to set about putting our plan into action. A.P.P.L.E crowdfunded with Spacehive, raising over £20,000 . Thank you to everyone who donated.
We made our target budget with thanks to LB Ealing for their generous matched funding and to John Lyons for a further refurbishment grant. So, with the funding in place we could proceed.
The first stage was to put in place 2 sheds to store all our sports equipment. A BIG thanks to The Shed , the company that cleared the ground, laid the foundations, and put up the large shed. We then had to clear our storeroom ready for the transformation into a new kitchen.
The work started after the summer holidays and was completed in the middle of October. Big thank you to Richard Tripp for his great work.
We are still getting straight but the kitchen is a huge success.
Thanks to the staff who have worked so hard clearing, sorting, and putting it all back together.
Challenges
The continual challenge is funding - the insecurity makes forward planning very difficult. Emerging from Covid was more difficult than expected, it created problems with planning and staffing (staff illness, staff shortage when furlough ended and before we could apply for project funding). And now we are facing a cost-of-living crisis which directly affects not only everyone who comes to us, but also the availability of funding.
9
Our building is a continual challenge, but we love it. Earlier this year we began our Kitchen Hub project, and the kitchen has been constructed. We now plan to create our outdoor eating area and develop our kitchen garden to support our food programme.
"I love everything about ARTBLOCK. It is the lair of fun and excitement" NR,13
Projects for the coming year
We aim to develop new projects that make use of our new kitchen space. We have contacted a local group: ‘Nourishing Routes’, who are developing projects around healthy eating and are interested in working with us.
The second stage of the Kitchen Hub project is planned for the spring. This is to create an outside eating area with the new kitchen door opening out into the garden. This is now in the funding and planning stage.
And following a recent survey with our young people we are planning to create artwork around an animal and environmental theme. ‘The World we want is full of animals.’

Stats 2023
319 individual children and young people have attended over 3 times this year this year. The group is made up 154 boys, 165 girls.
Our core group is made up of 114 children and young people who attend on a regular basis.
55 countries are represented.
385 individual children and young people attended during the summer holidays.
We served 1145 individual meals in the summer holidays.
Training, work experience and active engagement
We currently have more than 40 children who have both completed and are working towards one or more A.P.P.L.E. Achievement Awards (AAAs). This is a large participation increase since last summer, with more and more individuals wanting to take part in the scheme.
-
16 AAAs to our Year 5/6 in cooking and art.
-
53 young people have taken part in work experience day as Youth helpers/assistance/mentors.
Workdays include tasks towards AAAs. For example, setting up and running an activity.
Through these AAA’s children have reported increased confidence, and a greater keenness to test their abilities, as well as stepping outside of their comfort zone to experience new opportunities:
13
Building resilience - small steps at a time:
Conversation with Hanya:
Hanya: The first time you are cooking, the very, very first batch might not be perfect, but if you do it again and again it will be perfect. Staff: So, practice makes perfect? Hanya: Yes, so the first one won't be perfect, but the next ones will. Staff: So, you have learnt that through cooking club? Hanya: Yeah

Summary
The past few years have been extraordinary. Covid and the cost-of-living crisis have meant that we have faced new, unthought of challenges as well as old familiar ones. Housing and poverty were problems before, and bullying and problems at home are not new issues, but the scale and severity of it today is what is new and shocking.
A.P.P.L.E. is a joyous place. It is a place of fun and hope. Throughout this period, we have done what we always do – we have looked at the need and adapted to meet it.
Covid tested our adaptability and ingenuity. What would remain and what would we lose as we all went through it and now, post-covid, how do we all recover in a cost-of-living crisis?
What remains is A.P.P.L.E. itself. A centre open to all, free and welcoming.
What has been shaken for all of us is carefree-ness, optimism, and faith in the future. What we see in our young people is increased anxiety, selfcriticism, disaffection, and a detachment from their futures. When talking to young people about their futures there is a hesitation, a 'whatever' approach, a wariness in investing too much. They have learnt that things can change in drastic ways.
Going forward, what is needed is resilience and hope.
We aim to equip our children and young people with the skills and confidence they need to identify and realise their goals. Resilience is built on knowing you belong, self-confidence and accomplishments. Only then can you weather setbacks. We will continue do this by creating a safe, welcoming space where children and young people feel they are valued and can learn new things without pressure or the fear of failure.
And finally, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us this year. Thank you to everyone who donated to the kitchen hub; to Mayor Hitesh Tailor for making us one of his charities of the year; to Richard Thrip who created our lovely new kitchen; to the hardworking members of the committee; to John Lyons and LB Ealing for funding the new kitchen. And a special thanks to the fantastic staff who make A.P.P.L.E. such a special place for young people.
