TRUSTEES’ REPORT
The trustees submit their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2022.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY
The charity’s principal activity during the year was that of a Buddhist Temple for the advancement of the Shin Buddhist religion.
TRUSTEES
The trustees during the year were:
The Venerable Chimyo Takehara Mr Reitaro Oga The Reverend Professor Taira Sato Dr Stephen Montgomery Professor John White Mrs Kaori Punwani Professor Hideaki Nagase Mr Izumi Ida Mrs Etsuko Imamura Crellin Mr Andrew Webb Mrs Dilly Suzuma Professor Nick Tyler Professor Gillian Murphy
REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES 1 APRIL 2021 - 31 MARCH 2022
During the period from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022 Three Wheels recorded 952 individual visitors and 92 overnight stays of one or more nights. Since last year’s drop in visits and overnight stays due to the Coronavirus pandemic restrictions on public mixing, the numbers have been steadily increasing as Three Wheels has been able to hold in person religious activities once again.
It is the Trustees’ sad duty to report in this annual review the passing away of Professor John White, Mr Frederick Adkins and Mrs Ann Montgomery who are three deeply esteemed founding members of the London Shogyoji Trust. There are individual letters of condolence to them in the minutes of the London Shogyoji Trust that record with deepest gratitude the selfless work they each contributed in countless ways to the establishment and development of Three Wheels since its founding in 1994.
The funeral for Professor John White was held at Three Wheels on 3[rd] December 2021 and was attended by many people both in person and via a live video link. Three Wheels were deeply grateful to welcome the attendance of Rev. Keimei Takehara, Rev. Emmyo Sato and Mr Masayuki Ogawa from Shogyoji Temple in Japan as well as for all of the help and support from many members of the Three Wheels Buddhist community. All of them worked tirelessly to organise the funeral service in the spirit of “doing for the doing” and “harmony within diversity” that Professor White taught us by example since the inception of Three Wheels.

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2022
We report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31 March 2022, which are set out on pages 6 to 10.
RESPECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES OF TRUSTEES AND INDEPENDENT EXAMINER
As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011. You consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is our responsibility to examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act, follow the procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act, and to state whether particular matters have come to our attention.
BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINERS’ REPORT
Our examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
INDEPENDENT EXAMINERS’ REPORT
In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention:
-
(1) which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
-
to keep proper accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
have not been met; or
- (2) to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
