STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The governing document is the congregation's constitution adopted, in 1999 and
as amended.
Vestry Committee members are elected at the Annual General Meeting. The Vestry
Committee can co-opt additional members during the year. There were no co-opted
members in 2022. All Vestry Committee members are managing trustees under the
constitution.
The Vestry Committee meets regularly during the year to discuss business and make
decisions. It may delegate actions to members of the committee from time to time. In the
event of a disagreement within the committee, decisions are made by majority vote. The
minister attends Vestry meetings in an advisory and non-voting capacity. Further details
about how the congregation is managed are available in the constitution.
Object of Unitarian New Meeting Church
The object of the congregation shall be the promotion of religion in accordance with the
principles of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches.
CHAIRPERSON'S ANNUAL REPORT 2023
2023 felt like a busy year as the conditions of the pandemic restrictions felt a thing of the
past and the city resumed to business as normal.
Cars in the carpark have returned to full capacity in the week as more people return to in-
office work. We have had an increase in enquiries for building rental although we have
been cautious with tenants. An addition to the site has been a chained padlocked
driveway, as increase traffic in the area from increased building work, as resulted in
unauthorized use of the driveway. Unauthorised parking had made life difficult for UNM
members and work teams. The solution is not perfect, but it is working for now.
In the first quarter of the year, our minister was busy with preparations for the anniversary
Sen41￿ at the General Assembly Annual Meetings 2023, supported by the congregation
and their wish to be in attendance. Followed by the congregation supporting their
minister's April visit to Unitarian Universalist Professional of Colour Conferen￿ held in
Atlanta, USA. Much information on the development of training packages in the Unitarian
Universalist on dismantling white supremacy culture in our congregations, welcoming and
inclusion workshops, allyship to justice issues, Winnie brought back for reflection and
consideration. There was also reflection on the increasing use of zooming and live
streaming that has become much of church life in the Unitarian Universalist congregations,
as well as the increasingly Multifa￿ted use of building space. Birmingham, like many
congregations have increasingly had low attendance numbers and are discussing ways
of making worship accessible for those who cannot attend in person. We are re-evaluating
the process of facilitating zoom at church now that one of the internet issues has been
resolved.
We continue to take our faith in action seriously with support of our minister's work in the
community with though Ladywood Project. Ladywood project is an anti-poverty charity
we have partnered up with for years. lan Minter took on the role as liaison with

Ladywood Project Advisory Committee as well as contributing greatly to their emergency
food supply stock. We thank lan for his time spent there and his contribution that helped
the church live out its faith with working in the community
The third quarter, UNM hosted visits from two Unitarian Universalist Ministers: Rev Dr
Natalie Fenimore of Shelter Rock Congregation Long Island with husband Charles, and
Rev Viola Abbitt of Coastal Virginia. Both were on visits to England. Rev Dr Fenimore led
a service in July and Rev Abbitt conducted her online service to her home congregation
from our building, celebrating our history of Joseph Priestley's contribution.
Soon after, we at Birmingham received news of the Regeneration project happening in
Ladywood which would impact us through a polential compulsory purchase order of our
building. The uncertainty is maddening for us as we await further news. However, we are
nol new to moving as our last move was also a compulsory purchase order, and we will
take it in our strive as a new adventure.
Willmott Dixon continues to be our neighbour as they lease the back garden for offices,
taking down dangerous cladding on nearby flats. They have been extremely useful in
aiding with our driveway situation and offering aid with kitchen refurbishment.
September welcomed our new student minister on placement in the form of MUA new
treasurer Kieren Mardle-moss. It has been a pleasure to have him with us. The year ended
with much humour and deep reflection as Winnie and Kieren co-led the Carol Service
Interactive play at Christmas. Kieren will be with us until May 2024.
In July, Derek Grinter, our organist of more than 12 years played his retirement service
followed by coffee and cake. We thanked Derek for his long service and looked forward
to his visit at Chrislmas. Sadly, Derek died in December, survived by his two daughters
and wife. His last lime of playing for us was for a funeral service in September. We greatly
miss Derek and his comparisons of his Salvation Army music to Unitarianism.
lain Jackson, pianist, who had played for us occasionally, is now a regular presence in
our services. We give much thanks to both lain and Sara (who has been with us for 20
years), for their wonderful talent that produces beautiful music for our services. In
September, in recognition of the talent and work it takes to play for worship services, the
work involved in preparing and conducting worship, the increase cost of living, the
committee reflected on the renumeration for musicians and worship leaders and increased
its fees to £80. Many thanks to all worship leaders that helped in leading services and
deepening our spirituality throughout the year.
Finally, we celebrate new membership, and we congratulate four members who have
attended recent training to lead worship and conduct rites of passage held by Unitarian
College. We look forward to welcoming them into these roles as they venture further into
their Unitarian journey of faith and service.

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The
charity's trustees consider that an audit is nol required for Ihis year (under Section
144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act)) and that an independent
examination is required.
It is my responsibility to:
examine the accounls under Section 145 of the 2011 Act

accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such
matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be

accounts present a 'lrue and fair view ' and the report is limited to Ihose matters set
out in the statements below.
Independent examlnerfs statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the

to keep accounting records in accordan￿ with Section 130 of the 2011 Act., and
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with
the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
