Chair's report
2022 was a busy year at Birmingham Unitarians.
Starting with our people. we have been joined by a number of new attenders throughout
the year who have enriched our community with their presence, and are very pleased to
have several who are now looking at membership. On a sadder note, we lost our friend and
member Jerry to cancer. Jerry was an activist in mental health justice and will be missed by
the congregation and wider community.
We continued our commitment to racial justice through the year. Members of the
con8regation spoke at the Foy Society conference in May about the unfair impact that the
UK criminal justice system has on People of Colour. This brought particular attention to the
disturbin8ly high numbers of Black deaths by asphyxiation in the UK, drawing parallels with
the death of Geor8e Floyd in Minneapolis, which sparked Black Lives Matters protests
worldwide.
Our other social action work this year has been in connection with the Ladywood Project,
who are based very locally to us. We have been able to provide them wtth increased
support during 2022 including food donations for emergency parcels and volunteer time as
well as additional financial support.
In the buildin& our bi88est project has been installing equlpment In the worship space to
enable us to provide better hybrid and online worship in the future. We have also
temporarily leased part of our grounds to a building company to enable them to carry out
fire safety work on nearby flats. The intention at the end of the works in a year or so's time
is that they will help us create a community garden behind the church.
In worship, ministry and learning, we joined with Rosslyn Hill chapel in London for a co-
congregational virtual poetry reading group. This was co-hosted by Rev Kate Dean of
Rosslyn Hill and our own minister, Rev Winnie Gordon. Winnie has also been busy with an
exhausting list of wider projects one highlight of which was her chaplaincy work with the
Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham city centre. Satlrical performers Three Acres and
Cow visited us in the autumn, and look forward to their return in 2023. We were delighted
to welcome student minister Shana Begum who carried out her first placement with us.
Shana proved to be a real asset during her time with us, leading interesting worship and
supporting us at our congregational away day at Holland House in the summer. We enjoyed
a variety of worship leaders throughout the year, Including members of the congregation,
Pete Markey from Kidderminster and Mphala Mogudi of Oxford and are very grateful to
everyone who contributed to our excellent worship.
