## **Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 December 2022** The Trustees have pleasure in submitting their report and financial statements of the charity for the year 01 January 2022 - 31 December 2022 ## **Reference and Administrative Details** Christian Values in Education (CViE) is a registered charity, no. 1076173. Email: enquiries@cvie.org.uk Website: www.cvie.org.uk The Trustees during the year were as follows: Michael David Ridout Timothy David Kingham Daniel John Sayers James Philip Skelton Mark Kinderman John William Parish Graham Peter Cottingham Matthew James Hyde John Benjamin Hart Mark Seymour (appointed December 2022) ## **Structure, Governance and Management** The charity is an unincorporated charitable trust and is constituted and governed by its Trust Deed dated 3 April 1998 as amended by a supplemental deed dated 26 February 1999, and administered by its Trustees. There are no custodian trustees or connected charities. New Trustees are appointed on the invitation of the existing Board of trustees based on the skills required. The chairman explains to potential trustees the purpose of the Charity, the responsibilities of trustees and confirms the suitability of the candidates. Potential trustees are provided with a copy of the Charity Commission’s document “The essential trustee: what you need to know, what you need to do”. New Trustees sign a “Trustee Eligibility Declaration” and a “HMRC Fit and Proper Persons Declaration”. Meetings are conducted face-to-face and online to meet the lifestyle commitments of current and potential trustees. ## **Objectives and Activities** The Charity’s aims are to advance Christian principles in Education. This is carried out by providing useful resources (hard copy and online) for children, parents and those involved in education as well as arranging an annual national conference which covers current issues affecting the teaching education of children. P.O.Box 273, Oakington, Cambridgeshire, CB24 3FW www.cvie.org.uk Contact: enquiries@cvie.org.uk Registered Charity No. 1076173 The main charitable activities in providing public benefit, as identified in the accounts, have been to provide regular communications (such as the Newsletter and email updates), maintain a website to provide trusted information for parents and those involved in education together with arranging and delivering the National Conference. The other major expenditure was the employment of a part-time Business and Development Manager to build on and further the work of CViE. In carrying out its activities in the year under review, the trustees have had regard to the public relevant guidance issued by the Charity Commission, and are satisfied that the activities mentioned above have all been for public benefit ## **Achievements and Performance** During the year a number of events were held online, building on this relatively new avenue of communication for our supporters. These allowed a far wider scope of attendees and enabled an efficient and open dialogue. In February, the focus was on home education and a group of over 60 devices from across the UK and Ireland attended. This led to a family starting to home school their children and facilitated a strong level of encouragement. Following the meeting, a network was established to enable the home school community present to get in touch more easily. In May, a forum style evening was held discussing state education, especially on the impact for Christian families with new ideology being promoted. Finally in November, a zoom presentation was given by Tim Kingham, one of our Trustees, on the impact we can have as Christians in being a school Governor. In September, the National Conference was held for the second time at the King’s Centre in Chessington. This was well attended by families, grandparents and supporters. The event also attracted a wider range of stands including a number of Christian publishers and organisations, including Christian Concern, Christian Institute, The Association of Christian Teachers, Lovewise and Truth in Science. The focus of the event was on two themes, “Issues Faced in Education Today” and “Worldviews in Education: Standing on Biblical Truth”. Breakout groups were also held for young children through to mid teens, including a talk entitled ‘That Almighty Hand’ which complemented a new booklet of the same title, focusing on the hand of God seen in World War II. During 2022 there has been a change of officers. Our Chair, Michael Ridout retired at the end of the year after serving since the start of charity in 1998. A presentation was made to mark Michael’s retirement at the National Conference in September, together with the grateful thanks of Trustees and supporters for his tireless efforts on behalf of CViE. From January 2023, the new Officers are Dan Sayers (Chair), James Skelton (Vice-Chair) and Graham Cottingham (Treasurer). The year also saw the appointment of a new Trustee, Mark Seymour at the end of the year. We give thanks that our needs as a charity have been met through 2022. The Business and Development Officer role has proved useful and enabled the more regular issue of updates to supporters, as well as the increase of social media reach. More funds will be needed for the this to be sustainable going forward. As a very small organisation, we are conscious of our limited resources. However, we also are reminded that all of our needs are provided by One who is greater than any of the obstacles we encounter and we trust the Lord to go before us in the future. ## **Financial Review** Overall receipts for the year increased from £25,492 in 2021 to £29,983 in 2022, this was primarily due to an increase in donations and contributions from supporters. Total payments also increased from £21,853 in 2021 to £24,573 in 2022. The increase in expenditure in 2022 was attributable primarily to booklets, newsletters and advertising, as CViE continue to endeavour to expand our reach and support to Christians in education. ## **Reserves** It is the policy of trustees to maintain sufficient funds to enable them to continue the current work of CViE and also to expand the volume of resources and their accessibility both physically and online. Reserves for the year end 31 December 2022 amounted to £22,010 and these are considered a sufficient basis to continue the work of CViE in 2023. ## **Going concern** The Charity has sufficient reserves to continue as a going concern. Trustees have identified the need to further promote the work of CViE in order to continue to sustain the employment of a part-time employee once grant funding ceases in 2023.
