CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2025

The Chairman’s Report for Tamworth U3A 2025 should be a reflexion of all that happened in that year and we have certainly had a very successful and busy year.

We have grown again with our membership total being 523 members. We have also started in that year a new group “Line Dancing with Latin Rhythms” which is extremely popular and we have a very enthusiastic teacher Robert. I feel that the increase in people asking for information about joining our group is because we now have an excellent website with lots of information and it is kept up to date by our very own Webmaster Gwen. A very valuable advertising tool. If you know of any forthcoming events in the town that you think our members would be interested in attending please let Gwen know. Check out the Gallery on the website and you will find lots of photos of members enjoying themselves, some maybe more than others!!!

Our Speaker Secretary John Earl organised an eclectic group of speakers and entertainers during 2025. We were entertained firstly by Chris and his guitar playing songs by the Shadows and also the beautiful and talented Holly who took us back to the songs of the 50’s and 60’s. The speakers had a variety of subjects from Richard III, magpies, Robert Peel, Children’s TV favourites, Crimson Fields and how can we forget Rocket to the Moon, the story of NASA and the race to the moon by Kevin. We finished the year with our very own Tamworth U3A choir who sang carols and Christmas songs to get us in the Christmas spirit led by their musical director David Brookes.

In June we went on our U3A holiday to Scarborough. This was organised by the holiday trio Sue, Sue and Roger. As usual they did an excellent job and worked hard to make sure everybody had a good time. Having our very own exclusive coach again meant we could have complete control of the trips we went on. The weather and the company were excellent with lots of great memories made.

The other big event organised was the Picnic at Elford Walled Gardens. This time the weather wasn’t good and we managed some how to cram in the marquee to shelter from the rain and eat the delicious picnic supplied by Jeffries Catering. Thanks again go the volunteers of the gardens, especially Mary, who made the event the success it became. Think the war spirit came out in all of usl!! It did eventually stop raining and some of us managed to see the lovely gardens. It was a great way to spend an afternoon. Eating, drinking and chatting!!!

Over the year lots of day trips were organised. The garden appreciation group excelled with a garden trip nearly every month. From Upton House, John’s Garden, Biddulph Grange Garden, Trentham, Easton Walled Garden and Walsall Arboretum just to name a few. Sue, Sue and Roger again were the expert organisers. So much hard work involved and some excellent gardens visited.

The History Group under the leadership of Martyn had a day trip to Oxford and the members visited many interesting historical buildings while they were there. Also the Medieval Group had a day in St Albans and one of the places they visited was an arranged tour of St Albans Cathedral under the expert guidance of Robert Bates, the leader of that group.

This year for the first time we entered a decorated Xmas tree at St Editha’s church for Tamworth U3A. Thanks to all the people involved. I personally thought it was a really successful entry and advertised what we can offer new members. Apparently we won first prize for the most well hidden switch for the electric lights, which had to be turned off every night!!!!

On the committee we have the lovely Eileen who will send a card to any member who is having a hard time and needs cheering up or has health issues. Please contact her she is ready and waiting to send a card to make sure that member doesn’t feel alone or forgotten. She has a gift of knowing exactly what to say. We are here to support our members.

News flash we are now on the map as far as Head Office of U3A is concerned. Recently appointed National Film Studies subject advisor is our very own David Pratty. He even has his own page on the NATIONAL U3A website with a very flattering image!! Well done Dave.

Recently we lost one of our Group Leaders Mike Pate. He was instrumental in starting the Ukulele Group a few years ago and it has grown considerably. They have entertained us many times with Mike being the lead vocalist. I am pleased to say that the group will continue under the very capable hands of Brian Beasley. I would like to send my condolences to all the family and friends of members who we lost last year and this year. We have very special memories of our time with those members and they will never be forgotten.

Before I step down as Chairman I would like to thank the committee and the Group Leaders who work very hard on your behalf to make this such a successful and friendly organisation.

Thank you for voting me as your Chairman for 2025.
