## **Activities & Achievements of the Charity**

The following activities were carried out to achieve the objectives of the charity during the year 2020/2021.

Health and safety of the venerable monks as well as the devotees continued to be the highest priority of this year too due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic situation. We continued to minimise the number of devotees attending and encouraged to join on online platforms for the religious and cultural activities.

## **Blessings for the new year**

The annual pirith chanting was held on the 9[th] of January to bless the devotees and to bless the humanity to overcome the pandemic where the devotees joined via online platforms. Ratana sutra which is well known as a powerful chanting to overcome such situations was specially chanted regularly at the temple.

## **New Year Ceremony**

The annual Sri Lankan new year ceremony that is held in the month of April is one of the major events for the Sri Lankan community living in Essex. This was held online for the first time on the 18[th] of April. The organising committee, the children, parents, and the teachers took an innovative step to conduct a pre-recorded performances of the children of the Dhamma school. This was a challenging and strenuous task for our Media and IT team to produce the video presentation. The children, parents and the IT teamwork is highly commendable. This also has contributed significantly to uplift the emotional wellbeing of both the children and the adults during the lockdown period.

Wesak full moon day is the main day of the Buddhist calendar where the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Buddha is commemorated. Religious programmes were held throughout the Wesak day on the 26[th] of May. Observing sil (eight precepts) is the main religious activity usually takes place at the temple but this year both the venerable monks and the devotees experienced a different approach where they observed sil in their respective houses.

## **Vas Aradhana (Invitation for Rain retreat)**

Rain retreat and the katina procedures commence on the full moon day of the month of June. This is year fifteen families were the main dayaka (sponsors) of this meritorious activity and the invitation for the venerable monks was held on the 24[th] of July with a participation of a small number of representatives of the devotees.

## **Special Sermons and Chanting by the venerable monks**

Despite the challenges due to the pandemic the venerable monks continued and even went one step further to offer their services guide through the religious needs and uplifting the mental status of the devotees.

As such religious ceremonies were conducted for five funerals, chanting, and blessing for the COVID 19 victims. Supporting the families of COVID 19 victims in various ways to overcome the difficult situation and raising donations from the devotees to support the funerals were of significant service.

## **Redbridge Faith Forum**

The Head of the Vihara, Venerable P. Hemaratana thero continued to participate in the zoom meetings of the Redbridge Faith Forum and the charity actively contributed to the harmony among the different faith communities through the activities of the faith forum.
