CHAIR'S STATEMENT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2024
The chair presents her statement for the ￿Par.
I want to thank all the volunteers. stsff and tJustees who have supported the Trust during the last. most difficult,
year and indeed the last 26 years. It has been very much appreciated and through their support the Duthorth
Worcestershire Trust has been able to grow from a small charity, focussing on litter and graffits., to a well-
respected local player dealing with the dimate and b￿1VerSty rJises.
The Tnjst has had many great years managing some fantastic and cwcial projects. However, with the reality of
not being able to continue. for many reasons, our three major projects. the Pump House Environment Centre,
the Worcestershire Resou￿ Exchange. arKI Ranger Tearn. the trustees have made the decision to start
winding up the Trust. Sadly, we said gwjbye to all our staff and volunteers this year, leaving the board of
trustees to finish where the Trust started. Resources were sold and any remaining funds will be distributed to
worthy local environmental causes.
Through the impending sale ol Chapter Meado￿, the Trust will use those funds to provide grants to local
environmental groups wrth the task of improving the natural and built environment of the area Cecil loved so
much. We hope to see efft)rts on addressing the in￿asInglY important environmental issues with the aim of
raising the profile of Worcester through community and educational projects to influence the development of a
more resilient and robust oty.
Our planet faces many challenges but knowing that there are kKal champions in Worcester, in a position to take
up the mantle and continue the legacy thal Cecil initiated has b￿n a great solace.
It has b￿n my privilege to be involved in the Trust for all its existen￿ and to worked with so many
dedicated volunteers and staff abng the way. We couldn't have done it without them and so once again, on
behalf of the Duckworth family. l express our thanks. Long may Cecil's legacy continue through them and
others.

The Trustees present their annual report together wrth the financial statements of the The Duckworth

a Trustees. report and a directors, report under company law. The Trustees confirm that the Annual Report and

of the charitable companYs governing document and the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice

REVIEW OF TRUST ACTivmES (1ST JUNE 2023 TO 31ST PAAY 2024)
. Summary
The Duckworth Worcestershire Trust has b￿n in operation for 26 years now and in that time, it has delivered
many benefits for the people of Worcester and for the environment around the city. As tt has been for many, the
last few years have been challenging, and sadly some very tough decisions about the future of the Trust have
had to be made. This has resutted in the closure of the Worcestershire Resource Exchange in 2022 and the
Trust's long-stsnding presence at the Purnp House. despite rts best efforts, has ended.
The Duckworth Worcestershire Trust ended its lenure at the Pump House Environment Centre at the end of
2023, with the last day of opening being the 30 September 2023.
Activities aS$(￿lated with the Pump House Environment Centre were reviewed to decide the future directK)n of
the Trust. This ultimately resulted in the decision to stop current acttvities and to try to secure a sale for Chapter
Meadows and to transfer ownership of Apex Park. Therefore. sadly all staff were rnade redundant by the end of
2023. However. with funds expected to be raised from the sale of the meadows, the Twst is ncwi in the process
of planning a community grant scheme offering funding that will focus on enhancing the natural environment and
promoting sustainable living. The Twst sees this as a posits.ve to continue contributing to environmental
improvements and to create a legacy for future generations.
From June 2023 until the cessation of activities. 462 registered volunteers supported the Trust's work. The
Volunteer Litter Warden Scheme (VLWS) was still proving extrernely popular and new local groups used the litter
picking equipment loan scheme (LELS). The Dwf loan scheme had an increased outreach wrth an extra 183
volunteers over the last 6 months of the scheme before management ceased in November 2023.
Overall, there were 10.002 hours of support across the whole Trust by registered volunteers during the year. the
equivalent of 5.5 members of full-time staff.
Whilst the long-tenn future of the Trust is uncertain. the tx>ard is committed to ensuring the legacy created in the
past quarter of a ￿ntUry is a long tasting one for the people of Worcester.
would like to thank the businesses. organisations and customers who supported and shared the Trust's
vision and enthusiasm for promoting environmental issues. The good woth done by the Trust woukl not have
been achieved without the generous and cornmrtied assistance of volunteers and staff. The Trust￿ vnuld like
to take this moment to recognise this and thank them all for their support over the last 26 years.

PUMP HOUSE ENVIRONPIIENT CENTRE
The Pump House Environment Centre opened to the public as an environmentsl centre and meeting venue in

Duckworth Worcestershire Trust has been the onty tenant.
DWT had a lease of 20 years for the building. due to expire in 2023. As mentioned in last yearfs report, the Trust
was already trying to secure another long-temi tenure from Worcester Cty Council. At the same time, talks were
ongoing with a commercial operator. interested in running the cafe within the buikling.
Fairly early into this budget year. it became appa￿nI that the updated tern￿ on offer were not viable for the
Trust. There were also issues with the building that Dwf was expected to rectfy (although by the end of the
tenure Dwf managed to prove it was not accountable). Talks ended with the Trust reluctantly having to give

However. during the first few months of the finanoal year. the Pump House continued to operate as nomal.
From June until September 2023. the Pump House operated a public drop off point for the Terracycle UK KP

Global and national events were promoted across the Trust using posters in the café. Gheluvelt Park and social
media posts to inform the in-house and online communities with the aim of inspiring further interest and
research.
In June, the centre played host to Sevem Rising 2222. a digital game which went on Iouf around the W0￿$ter

in climate. Users had the opportunty to imagine what adaptations lrfe woutd have to have made to cope in the
new condikn'ons. For iwo weeks the game was installed in the Pump House café for the public to play and
explore. In addrtion, an educatM)n workshop for families was held in the Pump House meebng room, linking into
the themes of climate change, *ptation. and mit￿atIOn and h(M people can act now to prevent further global

series of events. A wdeo was pr(Kluced from photo montages for online promotK)n to encourage creative reuse
and imaginative use of waste resources. These events were funded by Grffiths. the civil engineers responsible
for the Kepax Bridge project. to offset the impad of site constfuction on visitor numbers to the Pump House
Environment Centre.
The Pop-up Playground event for Augusys Nats"onal Play Day was advertised in Worcester News, Visit
Worcester website and on Parents Voice Worcester feeds. Special promotional material was designed in house
to recognise the contributs'on made by Grrffiths Civil Engineering.

The Rangers, storage container was sorted. emptied. shelving dismanded and recycled and removed. There was

hours of their time to support staff.
Local conservation groups and voluntary organisations were granted first refusal to purchase conservabon tools
from the Dvirr Rangers, store. Remaining tools and resources were given away. Wild and Rooted Community
Interest Company, The Worcester Environmental Group, Men's Sheds, Worcester Community Garden, Wild
Goose Rural Training and WOr￿ter Cathedral Eco Group were amongst those to benefit from redU￿d price or
donated items.
The reference books from the eco café were gifted lo Wor￿ter Community Garden for storage in their floating

Display materials were donated to Malvem Cube and metal was tsken to be recycled.
Three final clearance sales and one open house event were organised to distribute any remaining Pump House

The final iwo Trust staff members. the Prqed Officer, and Volunteer & Community Ctrordinator. were made
redundant in December 2023.
CHAPTER MEADOWS
For over 25 years Chapter Meadows has been in the hands of the Dwf and in this time the Trust has
undertaken work to enhance and maintain its ecobgical value and has provided infrastructure for the people of
wOr￿ster to use and enjoy this irnportant greenspace. Working to Countryside Stewardship standards, the
Trust has managed this site in a tradrtional manner.
As in previous years, the current grazief was retained. and cattle retumed to the meadows once again as part of
the ongoing Countryside st￿lardship management agreement. renewed for the 2023 year. Almost £2300 was
receNed from the Rural Payments Agency as part of this scheme for 2023. The grazier managed the fencing as
part of the agreement and infomed the Trust should any other work be needed.
Due to the SFgnificant challenges over the last few yEars. leading to the closure of its operations. the Trust has
been very keen to secure a positive future for the historic stte. Wrth the closure of the Pump House and the loss
of staff, the Trustees sadly decMJed to relinquish liabilty for Chapter Mead¢Ms. whilst attempting to secure the
long-term stewardship and secunty of the rAinic riverside site. By the end of the budget year, a sale looked
imminent.
A local philanthropisl. keen to continue the work the Trust has already done. recognises how important this site
is to the people of Worcester and to nature. They agreed to purchase the srte in February, and this was
Pro9￿$S1ng well by the end of the budget year. with the completion due in the summer. They are seeking to
continue the environmentalty sensits've grazing regime at the site and look at how the sÉte's ecological value and
public enjoyment can be enhanced by collaborating with local volunteer groups such as the Worcester
Environmental Group (WEG). They also plan to invest more into the site and have agreed to promote Dwf's
groundwork and legacy.
In addition to securing a safe future for the site, the Duckworth WorcesteTshire Trusl has committed to distribute
all the funds received from the sale to k)cal projects and community groups.
The Woodland Tfust More Woods project eam)arked for delivery duriro the November 2022 - March 2023
planting season, which was put on hold last year. will no longer be relevant to Dwr.
