## **Training Nights**

Thursday evening remains our main "club night" at the Dolphin Swimming Pool.

Pool training sessions are "held” every Thursday evening throughout the year (including school holidays except Easter Week and Christmas Week when we have a break.

The evening is now divided into two main sessions:

- **Session 1: 7.00pm to 8.30pm** - caters for the Rookie members. They normally start at 7.00pm for a dry theory / life support session followed by a pool session from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

- **Session 2: 8.00pm to 9.30pm** - caters for members of a slightly older age group and covers training towards the National Lifesaving Academy Qualification This includes theory / life support sessions followed by a pool session for both junior and senior members.

Training in Lifesaving, Lifeguarding and Life Support skills are given to members both in the swimming pool and in open water at Sandbanks.

Open water training sessions are organised for the summer months on a Thursday evening.

Examinations are regularly undertaken for RLSS / SLSA / RYA awards.

Training is also provided in first aid, power boat handling, paddle craft, radio communications and other associated topics throughout the year.

## **2024 Trustee Annual Reports**

## **Chairman’s Report**

The year started with members taking part in the internal Club Competition, which was well attended, followed by the Poole, Bournemouth, and Christchurch Lifesaving Association (PBCLSA) Twilight competitions, as well as hosting a sponsored swim and members raised an incredible £1173 to help formulate a bursary fund for future competition entrants.

The first of many safety cover events of the year started in May and finished in September. Members volunteered and provided manned safety boats, kayakers and beach walkers at two Sandbanks Triathlons, two British Rowing Regattas, The Poole Harbour Canoe Race and of course, our very own Brownsea Island Swim, ensuring the safety of all swimmers and participants. In addition, club members provided weekly safety cover on kayaks, from mid-April through to mid-October for East Dorset Open Water Swimming Club.

The evening beach training sessions were held for the whole of the summer and all members were invited to take part, however Trainers struggled to balance the demands of the new NLA awards alongside our general beach lifesaving goals.

In July the club were invited to host the Wessex Branch Beach Training Day - feedback from neighbouring clubs was that the day was a great success and enjoyed by all. The young people even managed to squeeze in a boat ride in Legacy! As with previous years, members again took to Hamworthy Park Fete to help raise awareness of water safety and lifesaving skills.

The kayak training sessions and boat familiarisation days during the summer proved very successful and the club’s intention is to continue these into 2025.

In October, 13 members entered the South Region Heats of the RLSS UK National Life Saving Championships in Dorchester in the Junior Pairs, Senior Pairs, Individual and Masters events. Six qualified to represent the South Region at the National Lifesaving Championships held in Leeds in November, competing against lifesavers from the other 12 regions of RLSS UK.

- 6 -

Our Masters competitor finished in 8th place in the 50-59 years Master’s Open, with our Open Male, finishing 11th. Our Senior Open Boys pair finished in a very respectable 10th in the Senior Open, and a very impressive 6th for our Senior Girls Pairing, who also bagged a silver medal in the wet scenario.

Finally, as a club we have achieved so much in the past year and continue to see member and trainer numbers grow.

## **Amanda Wise-Hall**

## **Treasurer’s Report**

2024 was a good year in terms of the club finances.

We ended the year, up on previous years, which puts us in a very stable position going forward. Membership was buoyant at 105 for the year, which accounted for £3659 in membership fees.

We were also successful in making claims for Gift Aid during 2024 and were able to back date for 5 years, which the provided an additional £3877. Our members also undertook a Sponsored Swim and raised an incredible £1173 to formulate a competition bursary fund.

The weather was at long last, favourable to us during 2024, which enabled the club to deliver and run the first successful Brownsea Island Swim since 2019. This was a huge success with 224 swimmers and over 100 volunteers which made up the Marshal Team and Safety Cover Team. Feedback was that it was a thoroughly enjoyable event for all those involved. Budgets were created at the start of the year, with the intention of generating approx. £6500 to keep the club running. However, due to costs spiralling, we decided to self-cater and due to a potential health and safety concern on the day itself, we were advised to source our own route off the island for all swimmers. This gave us an overall saving and the total from the swim in 2024 was £9476. An additional £805 was generously donated to the club by swimmers, which meant the swim generated just over £10K for 2024.

The Brownsea Swim 2024 also donated over £6500, spread across the following clubs that kindly came out to support RLSS Poole LG with the safety cover, and without whom we could not hold the event. Poole Harbour Canoe, Branksome SLSC, Southbourne SLSC, Bournemouth Lifeguards, RLSS Boscombe Lifeguards and Poole Sea Scouts

## **Mark Shakles**

## **Club Captain’s Report**

2024 has proved to be another successful year for the club.

- 7 -

Training has been to a good standard and beach training through the summer was well attended, however the NLA qualifications continued to provide challenges. As a result, the focus for beach training 2025 will move to operational and practical skills rather than the repetitive syllabus that we have worked towards for the past 2 years

A key activity in the club calendar is providing safety cover for swimmers engaging in open water swims either as individual challenges or as part of triathlon events. 2024 saw our members volunteer to take part in:

- Brownsea Island swim

- Sandbanks Triathlons (x2)

- Support to GB Rowing (x2)

- Poole Harbour Canoe Club - Harbour race

- Regular cover for East Dorset Open Water Swimming Club.

The Seahorse swim did not take place last year, but it is taking place in 2025 and is already on our calendar. Unfortunately, the Brownsea Swim will not take place in 2025. Whilst this is disappointing in terms of our activity and profile, it is equally a blessing not to have the planning burden that goes with such a high-profile event and gives some much-needed time back to the organisers of this event - Thank you Mark & Lou for all that you have done with this event.

Throughout the year members hit the age limit that they are allowed to take part in safety cover, and we saw a few members take part for the first time. 2025 should bring even more members that are old enough to take part, and we look forward to welcoming them on to the team.

It is my intention that we repeat the very successful kayak training days that were run during the summer months and helped support our events. We will also be repeating the boat familiarisation days open to the younger members of the club, and as a taster to slightly older members with a view to completing formal RYA training. On one familiarisation day we even managed to rescue a group of four people that were being swept away from shore on paddle boards due to difficult conditions. This highlighted the benefit that our presence can have even when we were not anticipating being in a rescue capacity.

I firmly believe that event cover is a key part of club life as it gives vital experience, develops confidence and fosters team spirit.

Once again, I'd like to thank the army of parents that support the club throughout the year. It makes a huge difference having the additional help on beach training events and getting up ridiculously early to deliver your young people to the beach for safety cover.

Thank you all, it really is appreciated - and if any parents would like to become more involved with supporting events (Shore walking, kayak cover or boat crew) please come and have a chat!

## **Pool Training Officers Report**

In many ways, this has been a challenging year in terms of training. Firstly, in beach training, which saw a lacklustre turnout and a struggle to balance the demands of the new NLA awards alongside our general beach lifesaving goals.

The second, being the loss of 22 members this membership year. We understand that education must come first, and for some, that tastes change as they explore other areas of interest. Nevertheless, this is still an area of concern and will be something we look to address this membership year.

On a positive note, we have welcomed 12 new members to the club across Rookie and NLA, bringing the deficit to ten, although retention will remain a focus on the agenda.

I would also like to welcome Megan Sinden and Michele Wafa to the training team, who have both qualified as Rookie Instructors, and Ellen Shakles, who has qualified as a Young Leader. Thank you for volunteering your time to give back to the club. You are fantastic advocates for lifesaving and a credit to the club.

Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to all the instructors that give up their time each week: the club would not be what it is today without you. I look forward, cautiously yet positively, to what 2025 will bring.

## **Competitions Officer’s Report**

2024 has been a successful year for competitions, both in terms of participation, and results.

## Internal Club Competition

The internal club competition was run in January with great and enthusiastic attendance. Full results and photos are available on the club website.

## Twilights

We ran an indoor Twilight at the Dolphin pool back in February with teams from Poole, Boscombe, Branksome, Bournemouth and Southbourne attending. 15 Junior teams - 6 from Poole competed (1[st] , 8[th] , 11[th] , 12[th] , 13[th] , 14[th] ), 13 Open teams - 4 from Poole competed (6[th] , 8[th] , 11[th] , 12[th] ) and 5 Masters teams, with the Poole Masters helping to run the event.

In the Boscombe Twilight Poole entered 2 Junior teams, finishing 5[th] and 7[th] out of 12 teams, 1 Open team who finished 2[nd] out of 6 teams, and a Masters team who finished 3[rd] out of 6 teams

## RLSS National Lifesaving Championships

We had 13 entries for the Regional Championships in Dorchester, once again, the best represented club in the Southern region. 6 RLSS Poole members qualified to go through to represent the South region at the National finals in Leeds.

- 9 -

Our Senior girls finished 6[th] in the Senior girls pairs whilst winning a silver medal in the wet scenario. Our Senior boys finished 10[th] in the Senior Open pairs and 11[th] in the Open and our Masters finished 8[th] in the Masters men (50-59) Full results and photos are available on the club website

- - Results and photos can be seen at https://www.rlss.org.uk/lifesaving sport results

We have maintained our Competitions group in the late session, and in this group, I continue to coach competition and swimming skills to Seniors and Masters. Our national lifesaving championship competitors were also coached in this session leading up to the competitions including dry side scenario sessions.

I have continued to work to encourage competition training, and on improving competition skills throughout the club, promoting and running Twilight practice sessions for both sessions.

We currently have 6 gates which are worn, and the club are looking to replace them. We are also looking to invest in some more race fins as well as junior sport manikins.

As part of the clubs 50[th] year anniversary, we recently purchased club celebration swim hats which have already been worn with pride at two of the Twilight competitions.

## **Tim Harris**

## **Membership Officer’s Report**

Membership for 2024 - a total of 107 members, 74 of which are between the ages of 9 to 17 years and 33 of which are members made up from Seniors, Supporters and Life Member with membership numbers slowly increasing year on year.

Our new system of getting new members to complete a taster form is working well and we usually hold a waiting list with the view to take a new intake around September each year. They are then invited for a swim test when membership spaces become available.

We still need to enrol or keep our existing Senior members to be able to continue offering safety cover for many of the events we cover throughout the spring and summer months, and we need to have a further push in membership between the ages of 16 years and upwards.

## **Equipment Officer’s Report**

I am very happy to present this year’s Equipment Officer end of year report, highlighting the status and updates regarding our vital equipment. This year, we have made significant strides in ensuring that our equipment is in optimum condition to support our lifesaving, event and training activities.

## Kayaks

Our fleet of kayaks has been actively used throughout the year for both training and safety cover operations, not least our deployment in support of the Brownsea Island Swim. Regular maintenance checks and repairs have been conducted to ensure their seaworthiness, including fitting out the fleet with new padded seating for safety and comfort. We have taken delivery of some donated scaffolding to further improve our storage arrangements.

## Surf Life Saving Boards

The surf life-saving boards remain an essential part of our rescue equipment. This year, we faced some challenges with wear and tear due to age and as a consequence, several older and obsolete boards were disposed of. Plans are in place to add some new inflatable rescue boards to our fleet, as part of the ongoing program of equipment upgrades. We hope to finalise that in the 1st quarter of 2025.

## Sandbanks Beach developments

To better organize and store our equipment, plans are in place to install new equipment racks in the storage area of the right-hand garage. This racking will be robust and corrosion resistant have provided a more systematic and accessible way to store our life-saving clothing, reducing the time taken to retrieve and stow equipment and extending its’ lifespan. Following the highly successful Brownsea Island Swim of 2024, we conducted a clear-out of the garages, disposing of several obsolete items of equipment and clothing, to make space for a larger changing area and new kit. It is now safe and more comfortable for members to change. The roll out of beach kit bags and bibs was a success and likely to be repeated this coming season.

Thank you to Dave Perch for his ongoing maintenance of the garage padlocks and, also on that subject, new keys have been cut for the new compound gate lock.

## Brownsea Island Swim

This year’s event required the re-deployment of much of our event equipment and it stood up very well. The marker buoys, anchors and weights were used to good effect. Thank you to Brian for speedily arranging the repair of one of our large orange markers that was damaged through the year. We were able to get great value out of the tentage, re-using the large marquees for race control and admin. Cold casualty packs were re-used from previous years and our existing set of radios performed well, despite their advancing years. Overall, the event was efficiently provided for this year with only minimal purchases required.

## - Rigid Inflatable Boats Legacy and Apollo

Work is still underway to replace both Legacy and Apollo in the near future with completely new equipment. The hope is that we can prolong the legacy

- 11 -

of Legacy and offer it to 3rd Poole Sea Scouts, in line with the delivery of our replacement vessels. Apollo will be sold to make room for an upgrade after more than 25yrs of service.

Following the disappointing news that we will need to relocate our boats from Royal Motor Yacht Club, we recently received exciting updates from the Executive that there may be an alternative home available at Rockley Park, Hamworthy- watch this space for more updates.

## Dolphin Swimming Pool

Further repairs have been made to long serving storage at the Dolphin with newly reinforced cage shelving. The new “shed” installed last season appears to be holding up well.

## 2025

Plans for the early part of this year include the purchase of new gazebos, mesh fencing and feather flags for training and events, the new galvanised racking for the beach and finalising the new safety boats.

Thank you as always for all the willing helpers who have helped move kit and equipment, cleaned and maintained things and generally looked after our vital equipment over the year.

## **RLSS Poole Lifeguard Annual Club Honour Awards for 2024**

## **BROWNSEA SWIM 2024 REPORT**

The weather was at long last, favourable to us during 2024, which enabled the club to deliver and run the first successful Brownsea Island Swim, since 2019.

244 swimmers entered the swim, but only 224 eventually took to the water in June 2024.

The day was a huge success and with over 100 volunteers, that made up the Marshal Team and Safety Cover Team, joining us, the day turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable event for all those involved. It was just so lovely to see so many smiling faces and everybody having such a great time. It was just like Brownsea Swims of old, before we had to tackle COVID and Extreme Weather Incidents, as reasons for cancelling so many attempts at running a successful swim.

The usual budgets were created at the start of the year, with the intention of generating a target of approx. £6500 to keep the club running. This event has been our sole fundraising event for a number of years.

However, due to costs spiralling, we decided to self-cater and due to a potential H&S concern on the day itself, we were advised to source our own passage off the island for all swimmers and marshals. This provided us with an overall saving, and the total from the swim in 2024 increased to £9476. Add to that, the £805 generously donated to the club, by swimmers, meant the swim generated just over £10K for the club in 2024.

The Brownsea Swim 2024 also donated over £6500, spread across the following clubs that kindly came out to support RLSS Poole LG with the safety cover, and without whom we could not hold the event. Poole Harbour Canoe, Branksome SLSC, Southbourne SLSC, Bournemouth Lifeguards, RLSS Boscombe Lifeguards and Poole Sea Scouts.

Another Good News Story - Since 2009 we have encouraged Swimmers to use the swim to raise sponsorship for a charity of their choice. We just ask swimmers to let us know their chosen charity and the amount they actually raised for them. This year the swim actually generated £12404.00 spread over 24 different charities. Which makes it even more special.

- 13 -

It is with immense pride that we (RLSS Poole Lifeguard) can now say that the running total raised for a whole host of different, local, national and internation charities, since 2009, is a staggering **£167,087.21**

## **Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 December 2024**

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Governing Document**

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity.

## **Public benefit and Objectives**

The charity provides public benefit by providing lifesaving and water safety education and training to club members, and members of the local community, as well as providing safety cover for local waterborne events and activities.

## **Trustee Appointment, Induction and Training**

Potential new trustees are invited to events, meetings and presentations if they are not known to the club and its members. They have the opportunity to discuss trusteeship with existing trustees and will be made aware of their governance obligations.

## **Activities and achievements**

The Trustees acknowledge that the Club’s success is wholly dependent on the dedication and commitment of its volunteers who provide training in water safety, lifesaving, lifeguarding and safety skills. The Club continued to utilise the RLSS National Lifesaving Academy (NLA) Awards programme and delivered a number of successful programs including beach training during the summer, providing members with much needed experience of lifesaving at sea. The sessions included the use of paddle boards and kayaks as how to enter and exit the sea safely when the weather is producing large dumping wave onto the shoreline etc.

The Club has been able to, once again, provide invaluable waterborne safety cover for an array of local open water events throughout summer season. The club’s volunteers provided manned safety boats, kayakers and beach walkers at two Sandbanks Triathlons, two British Rowing Regattas, The Poole Harbour Canoe Race and of course, our very own Brownsea Island Swim, ensuring the safety of all swimmers and participants.

In addition, two members of our club, have provided safety cover on kayaks, every Tuesday evening, from mid-April through to mid-October 2024, for East Dorset Open Water Swimming Club, at their weekly training evening at Shore Road Beach, Poole.

The weather was at long last, favourable to us during 2024, which enabled the club to deliver and run the first successful Brownsea Island Swim since 2019. This was a huge success and 250 swimmers and over 100 volunteers, that made up the Marshal Team and Safety Cover Team, turned out to make it a thoroughly enjoyable event for all those involved.

## **Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 December 2024 (continued)**

## **Activities and achievements (continued)**

The year started with teams taking part in the Poole, Bournemouth, and Christchurch Lifesaving Association (PBCLSA) Twilight competitions, and a number of members entered the South Region Heats of the RLSS UK National Life Saving Championships in Dorchester in October. The Club entered competitors in the Junior Pairs, Senior Pairs, Individual and Masters event events. 13 members represented the club with 6 qualifying to represent the South Region at the National Lifesaving Championships held in Leeds in November, competing against lifesavers from the other 12 regions of RLSS UK.

Our Masters competitor finished in 8[th] place in the 50-59 years Masters open, with our Open Male, finishing 11[th] . Our Senior Open Boys pair finished in a very respectable 10[th] in the senior pairs open, and a very impressive 6[th] for our Senior Girls Pairing, who also bagged a silver medal in the wet scenario.

## **Financial Review**

During the year the charity had income of £50,475 (2023:£31,226) and expenditure of £37,420 (2023:£26,520) leaving the charity with a surplus of £13,055 (2023:surplus £4,706). The charity had unrestricted funds of £90,571 (2023:£77,294) and restricted funds of £204 (2023:£425). Free reserves (unrestricted reserves less the net book value of fixed assets) were £73,950 (2023:£55,284).

## **Reserves Policy**

It is the policy of the Trustees to maintain free reserves to a level sufficient to meet the anticipated demands, and a minimum of three year's operating costs. Unrestricted reserves at the year end are just below this minimum requirement based on the actual expenditure for the year to 31 December 2024.

## **Risk Management**

The major risks to which the Club is exposed, as identified by Trustees, are being reviewed and process established to mitigate those risks.

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of RLSS Poole Lifeguard**

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of RLSS Poole Lifeguard ('the Charity')

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 December 2024.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

As the trustees of the Charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I report in respect of my examination of the RLSS Poole Lifeguard's account carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of RLSS Poole Lifeguard as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn on this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **ACCOUNTING POLICIES (continued)**

## **Fund accounting**

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

## **Creditors**

Creditors are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors are normally recognised at their transaction price after allowing for any trade discounts due.

## **Going Concern**

The Trustees have prepared the financial statements on the going concern basis.

RYA Course Equipment - to fund the purchase of course equipment and PPE for the RYA Level 1&2 powerboating courses.

## **Purpose of designated funds**

**Sponsored Swim** - money raised in memory of Malcolm Acreman. A long time member of the club, who was central to a lot of what went on.
