Chair - Swansea Bach Choir - Report for AGM 

This report focuses on the business of the annual general meeting to be held on Saturday 11th October 2025. I am pleased to endorse the contents of the annual reports for 2024/5. presented by the Musical Director and the Treasurer as presented. The Choir’s Constitution requires the annual appointment of an Executive Committee which currently comprises the Chair, Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Vice-Chair, Librarians, Supporters and Friends Liaison, Publicity/Marketing/Social Media role support, Publicity/Marketing/Social Media – the trustees. In addition to formal committee membership, the work of the committee is supported by various members in various roles. Although not a trustee, the Music Director is a member of the Executive Committee ex officio. Ticket Secretary has stepped down from the Committee but continues to manage the ticket sales and box office. Archivist - continues to look after our archive. Membership, Social Secretary has left the choir. We have a number of vacancies for Committee roles. We can be flexible and split the tasks or job share. Nominations or self-nominations submitted to the Secretary are invited for all positions. Members requiring details of the duties of any of the positions are invited to contact the respective office holder or the Secretary. I would encourage choir members to volunteer. We would like every voice part to be represented so we need a tenor and a bass please. In particular, we are looking for a membership committee member and someone to help with website management and development. All current office holders and committee members are eligible for re-appointment and to the best of my knowledge are willing to serve for a further twelve-month period. 

The current committee agrees that it is unnecessary for every committee member to also be a choir trustee. In future, we intend the trustees to be the 3 officers and the vice chair. This does not minimise the importance of all the choir committee members. However, in addition to the practical difficulties and workload of making changes to the Charities Commission and at the bank, it is easier to have slightly more fluid roles reflecting people’s time and interests. This change is an agenda item for the AGM. 

Our 60th Anniversary Season was obviously a landmark point. Our four concerts and Come & Sing were appreciated by our audiences. We sang a varied programme over the Season, including Bach’s Mass in B Minor in the newly designated Swansea Minster. In July we were delighted to be included again as part of the Gower Festival and we repeated the concert a week later as we introduced ourselves to a Llantwit Major audience in their historic church. 



We held a Come & Sing which was so successful we will be holding another this season. Weperformed world premieres by Richard Whitehead and are thrilled he is continuing his compositions - we are looking forward to performing two more arrangements by Richard at our December 2025 concert. 

This past year has been an exceptionally busy one. A substantial effort was needed and made to raise funds to support the Mass in B Minor concert. As the Financial report shows, overall last year was financially successful. We had an estimated 400 in the audience for the Mass in B Minor and the Autumn and Gower Festival concerts increased our audience numbers compared to recent years. We have demonstrated that as a choir we can raise the resources for a special event. However, a notable proportion of that was from significant 

levels of sponsorship from sponsors who are not regular supporters. There were extra donations and efforts from within the choir. As I said last year, we are always under financial pressure, partly because we are a small choir so our membership subscriptions do not create a pot with a good margin over our costs. So I remind you again that apart from the membership amount, donations are always welcome. Please encourage others to become regular Supporters. Most importantly though, is to encourage people to come to our concerts. 

Thank you to the committee, who pay attention and offer advice, suggestions, help. All towards the smooth running of the choir now and into the future. Their energy, ideas and time are critical. 

Thank you also to the choir in general for distributing leaflets and spreading the word on social media. 

Thank you choir members for concert management help. Whether dropping off leaflets at the venue or helping reinstate church furniture, or liaising with the church wardens, the smooth running of concerts depends on being prepared and suitably equipped and forewarned of specifics of each venue. 

Thank you to family and friends who help with the “box office” at concerts from time to time. Thank you to all members of the choir for supporting me, making suggestions and contributing both help and extra to choir funds when asked. And thank you everyone for being such a great and supportive community. 

Thank you to Christine Range and to Iona Evans, my fellow Officers, for their invaluable work for the choir. You are a joy to work with. 

Thank you hugely to our fantastic accompanist. We look forward to your 



talented and expert playing, and also, appreciate you travelling so far for us.Lastly, thank you to our Music Director for your choices of music, the fun 

rehearsals, the extra time and effort, travel, you put in. Your enthusiasm and musical 

expertise draws our best performances. I feel really fortunate to be part of your choir. 

If I have forgotten anyone, I apologise, and I thank you. 

This current Season 2025/6 is an exciting one with a ton of fantastic music to sing and I look 

forward to singing with everyone. I look forward to our future.

Swansea Bach Choir Treasurer’s Report AGM 2025 

The 60th Anniversary Season as been and gone, and it ended with the choir in a good financial state: 

Opening balance on 1 September 2024: £7,300 

Closing balance on 31 August 2025: £14,280. 

Throughout this special season we received very generous donations from individuals; some of you had creative ideas like donating money to the choir in lieu of sending physical Christmas cards; or making and selling ornaments for the benefit of the choir, and we had great success with corporate sponsors for our special season with large sums of money raised. This resulted in explicit 60th anniversary sponsorship of £8,100 and sponsorship of other specific concerts and non-specific donations of £2,000. My thanks go to everyone contributing to this. 

Membership subscription raised just over £5,000, and from our regular Friends and Supporters we received £1,500 in subscriptions. Many thanks to our Supporters’ link person for looking after this group of loyal supporters in their sensitive manner, many of whom gave additional donations during last season. 

Ticket and programme sales came to £9,200, more than double of the season before. The musical programme might have played a role in this, but I would like to see a similar success this year, so please push for ticket sales as much as you can. It’s not just about the money, but also for the pleasure of performing to a sizeable audience. 

Other income was from the coffee/raffle at the rehearsals adding up to nearly £500 over the year. Easyfundraising (automatic donations from online shops at no cost to the individual if signing up and choosing Swansea Bach Choir as the beneficiary) raised nearly £200. 

I’m still to claim giftaid for last season’s donations, which should bring in over £2000. 

Artists’ fees will always be our main expense, as this includes the MD’s salary and the pianist’s fees as well as fees for soloists, bumpers, and other instrumentalists. In the last season we spent a total of £19,000 on these. 

Venue hire for a concert is £250 to £500 a time. Together with the venue hire for rehearsals we spent a bit over £1,700 on this. 

Programme printing and advertising came to £740 last season. 

Last year we spent £500 on music purchase/hire. This year started off looking to be more costly. Other choirs ask their members to purchase the music or pay the hire fee for pieces that are not in the choir’s library. I would like to suggest that we move towards such a system for two reasons: the 



choir’s library is bursting from its seams, and we could save money for the choir. We decided to increase the membership fee this season to £150 to get in line with other local choirs, and we are nearly there. As you might have worked out, with roughly 40 members, even the increased subscription doesn’t cover a great deal of our expenses, not even our fixed costs. This season we won’t be invited to the Gower Festival, which gave us a generous fee for our July concert. This means that we as the whole choir will have to work harder in finding our audiences. My thanks are as always to the MD and all the fundraisers. Here is to more great music making.
