Mission and Values
-
Wherever Mothers’ Union exists in the world we will express our Christian faith in the transformation of families and communities worldwide.
-
We will achieve this by promoting the importance of marriage, supporting families and nurturing faith; with members sensitively spreading the news of a God who loves and cares for us all.
-
Mothers’ Union is a Christian mission organisation working with people of all faiths and none. We are firmly rooted in a voluntary ethos centred on mutual respect and collaboration.
-
Our governance, leadership, and activities are driven by and undertaken through members within their own communities worldwide.
Risk Assessment.
The Trustees are satisfied that risks have been identified and a system is in place to manage and mitigate them.
Review of Diocesan Activities 2024.
The start of 2024 began with an optimistic and upbeat outlook with the Mothers’ Union theme of “Transformation- Now!”.
The Trustee Board consists of The President, 7 General Trustees, Secretary, Treasurer and the Chaplain. The required 4 meetings per year were held, being positive and constructive with all working as a team for the benefit of all members.
The diary of events for 2024 was agreed with dates, times and venues set for the 6 Deanery Festivals, Council Meetings, Lady Day and Mary Sumner Day Services, with a program for the 16 Days of Activism on Gender Based Violence, provided by both Mary Sumner House and the Faith Support Unit.
The Annual Gathering held in York was discussed with the possibility of extending this to include a holiday- this however proved to be too costly. It was at this Gathering that the “Rise up” campaign against domestic abuse was launched.
Our work with local hospitals continues by providing, Toilet packs, Angel Pockets- sadly always needed, premature baby items including blankets and nappies, this year members donated goods to help furniture a room for relatives to stay while a family member is hospitalised.
Our work with care homes continues with visits from members with particular care to keep in contact with our Indoor Members who continue to receive Birthday & Christmas cards.. Our work for patients suffering with Dementia is also ongoing and we continue to produce the much needed and appreciated Fiddle Pinnies and Twiddle Muffs to enhance and encourage patients’ stimulation.
The support for the Abergavenny Child Contact Centre- regulated and registered with the National Association of Child Contact Centres continues to be very vibrant. Two of our members are registered and certified Co-ordinators by the National Association, alongside the volunteers; many being MU Members. Our Diocese continues to help fundraising for the purchase of toys, financial support for some of the families and if needed help with the costs of running the centre.
Away From It All holidays- there is still a lack of uptake for this wonderful project but one family did enjoy the use of the Llandaff MU caravan at Porthcawl.
The Prison Project continues to be well supported by members attending their services on a rota bases, where prisoners who attend services are given Easter Cards, Christmas Cards along with gifts for both themselves and their children.
There was not an Annual retreat organised although some branches organised their own Day Retreats at Llangasty.
A quiet Day was held later in the year which was well supported.
Spring and Winter Council were held; breakfast was provided at Spring Council while Winter Council concluded with a soup lunch.
Lady Day services were held in all the Deaneries, along with Deanery Festivals.
Mary Sumner Day was celebrated with a Dioecian Lunch, with over 100 members attending.
The Summer of Hope appeal by Mary Sumner House was again well supported by members with many ingenious ways of fundraising.
Bishop Cherry, our Monmouth Diocesan Patron, invited the Mothers Union to have a stand at the Diocesan Conference, 150 packs of “Who We Are” were compiled; which included information leaflets regarding the work of the Mothers Union worldwide and our own projects were handed out to all the attending delegates.
The 3 monthly issue of the Newsletter provided free of charge to all our members continues to keep members updated, especially of what happens in other branches is very well received.
Provincial meetings for all 6 Diocesan Presidents were held
Plans for 2025.
The continued theme of ‘Transformation- Now!’ is to encourage members to become proactive in both their Branches and Communities to encourage contact with other Organisations and the General Public, to help raise awareness of the Mothers’ Union’s work with the hope of encouraging new members.
Projects for the Hospitals continues as in 2023 and is much needed. Our work with Dementia patients is still ongoing and we continue to produce the much needed and appreciated Fiddle Pinnies and Twiddle Muffs to help with their care.
Other Projects.
We continue to support along with the local Hospitals, Prisons, The Child Contact Centre, AFIA, Overseas links, Retreats and providing support and help to local Foodbanks.
The ’16 Days of Activism’ is extended to 365 days and with the Mothers’ Union becoming involved with issues of Domestic Abuse, with the Province becoming associated with the work of Women’s Aid Wales.
Plans are in place to celebrate the 150[th] anniversary of the Mothers’ Union this will be ongoing throughout 2025.
Council Meetings are planned along with a Diocesan Lunch.
Although the fear of Covid has diminished there remains concerns by members; ensuring both Health & Safety and Safeguarding Rules are followed the Mothers’ Union in Monmouth Diocese will continue to thrive.
2025 will be the start of a new triennium.
Pat Jarrett. Diocesan President.
