Here we have a very enthusiastic rider from Strathmore School on one of favorite ponies Sienna. The charity is run solely by volunteers who kindly devote their time each week.

2023 was a busy time for Barnfield RDA. The majority of our funds that we raise are dedicated to subsidising horse riding therapy lessons. This provides support to families that are unable to afford the full cost of these lessons for their children with disabilities.

## Volunteers

We are totally dependent on our volunteers who run the lessons. We are constantly on the look out for new volunteers and to build our pool as not everyone can commit to every week. Unlike other RDA charities we do not have salaried staff to help. We feel the purpose of our charity is to enable children to have access to these therapy classes which are expensive to run. It is also important for the children who attend each week to build relationships with our volunteers so we very much appreciate their commitment.

In most of the classes we run, the teachers help out lifting on and dismounting each rider and side walking while we lead the ponies and also side walk. So for a safe environment we require 3 people to look after 1 rider. We also have volunteers supervising the children and fitting the hats and gloves and to keep them still can be quite challenging!

## Lessons

In 2023 we continued to run our new class for secondary aged children which has been a great success. This is far more challenging physically and we require the school to provide a strong teacher that will accompany them each week!

We are currently subsidising around 30 children each week (we also have unsubsidised children). Expansion is restricted by the number of volunteers available and the space to hold the classes. Our volunteer pool is now around 20 which is still less than pre Covid. Each child has to be assessed for suitability, qualification for subsidies and regular commitment (as we are run by volunteers we aim for commitment each week as much as possible in order to schedule the classes and notify the stables which horses we require). Each horse has to be individually tacked up, then lead by a volunteer for the lesson with side walkers, depending on the severity of each individual disability. The lesson is usually run by a qualified paid instructor. Only small classes are held due to safety reasons, which is always paramount.

## Fundraising and Funds

We continue to apply for grants and run fundraising activities. We need to raise over £25,000 per year in order to subsidise the lessons. We have one asset owned by the charity – that is the Mechanical Horse which was 100% funded by private donations. This allows riders to practice riding techniques on a horse simulator run by a professional RDA trained instructor.

Our accounts reflect the success of our campaign to apply for grants, fundraise and the receipt of donations. We were awarded restricted grants from local

foundations as well as a RDA head office grant to help fund our lessons’ subsidies. In addition, we have had grants from Tesco, the Victoria Foundation and Kingston Council. We have also received a number of donations from local schools who have generously fundraised on our behalf. We once again ran a successful summer evening event at Ham Polo Club who are very supportive of our charity, a Xmas dinner and a Xmas calendar, all of which proceeds went to the charity.

We are totally dependent on the generosity of our BRDA supporters and the general public who we greatly appreciate and would like to thank.
