Samuel has been riding at Barnfield RDA for 3 years. He was non verbal when he arrived but can now happily chat away to the volunteers ! Riding is the highlight of his week.

2021 was again a challenging year for all charities. Barnfield RDA managed to gradually re-open our subsidised RDA horse riding therapy classes throughout the year but we are still struggling to return to pre-Covid activity levels and to raise sufficient funds through our fundraising events. We were successful in 2021 - being awarded a number of grants which have been a life saver for our charity and has allowed us to continue operating.

The school classes that we subsidise have been particularly challenging to run as Covid rules have prevented us from close contact with the pupils, so the teachers have been helping out lifting on and dismounting each rider and side walking while we lead the ponies. Our subsidised private group lessons have continued with help from our depleted volunteer pool. We continue to try and increase our volunteer pool which has dramatically reduced during Covid. We have also started offering individual lessons on our Mechanical horse simulator with a trained instructor. The children find this thrilling as they can actually learn to trot and canter in a safe environment!

Barnfield RDA Mechanical horse simulator

We are currently supporting around 25 children each week which is less than before Covid but we hope to gradually increase this during 2022. Our volunteer pool is also down around 50% from pre Covid numbers to around 20 but as confidence in health concerns grow we hope our pool too will increase. Each child has to be assessed for suitability, qualification for subsidies and regular commitment (as we are run by volunteers we aim for commitment each week as much as possible in order to schedule the classes and notify the stables which horses we require). Each horse has to be individually tacked up then lead by a volunteer for the lesson with side walkers depending on the severity of each individual disability. The lesson is run by a qualified paid instructor. Only small classes are held to due to safety reasons, which is always paramount.

Our accounts reflect the success of our campaign to apply for grants as a result of the Covid impact. We were awarded grants from Kingston Voluntary Action lottery round 2, RDA head office, RDA regional south east branch and St James Wealth Foundation. All these grants have been invaluable to help fund our classes. In addition, we have had generous individual donations and also one from St Matthews Church Surbiton, which we very much appreciated. We also ran a Just Giving appeal starting in June which continued throughout the year until December.

Our fundraising events resumed and we participated in the Ham Parade Market with the Sewing Angels generously raising funds for us by selling their home made products. We

were able to hold our Open day in September which was very well attended, a Xmas dinner and we produced a Xmas calendar once more.

Barnfield Riding School continues to struggle financially due to the loss of income during Covid and BRDA supports the stables as much as possible.

During 2022 we have been applying for new grants and are holding a variety of fundraising events. We are totally dependent on the generosity of our BRDA supporters and the general public who we wish to thank.
