The object of the New Lodge RDA are to promote the objectives of the National Riding for the Disabled Association (a registered charity under no 244108) by providing disabled people the opportunity to horse ride as therapy and in order to benefit their health and well-being.
The vision of New Lodge RDA is to enrich the lives of all disabled people through horses.
Our purpose is to ensure all our participants get an excellent experience with New Lodge RDA according to their specific needs.
In order to achieve these objectives New Lodge RDA provides riding five days a week throughout the year. New Lodge RDA is an inclusive organisation catering for riders from a wide range of ages and disabilities both intellectual and physical. We have a large group of riders on the Autistic Spectrum. The Centre is situated in the borough of Bromley but we also take riders from all the surrounding boroughs including Royal Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark and Bexley. Riders and volunteers come from all walks of life and ethnicities.
We are currently not at full capacity due to the difficulty in recruiting qualified instructors. Our long-term instructor has health issues and is not able to carry out as many rides as before. She is giving enough rides to keep the Centre running and training two new coaches with the hope they will be able to take over some of the duties soon. The weekends are our busiest times and we have private lessons on the remaining three days. We have one college group who have returned since Covid attending on a Wednesday afternoon.
The Contract with Greenwich short breaks has ended. We will be starting a new contract going forward with VCS through Greenwich. Unfortunately this is a much reduced budget and we have had to cut the service in line with this. It will allow us to continue to offer some sessions for less well off at a very reduced rate over the next four years of the contract.
Our riders generally attend weekly either long term or for a block such as a term. We run progressive courses tailored to the individual’s needs. We cater for an average of 40 riders a week and offer one off courses throughout the school holidays. Our riders gain great benefits both physically and mentally. Their confidence and self-esteem grows throughout the sessions. During this year we had a total of 85 riders attending 70 under 18. 46 riders
attended for the first time during this year. A total of 1476 sessions run this year. The Centre had to close for rides for five weeks in August and September when our instructor had to take time off for surgery. She resumed rides as soon as she was able.
New Lodge RDA relies on a band of volunteers to run the sessions and we currently have 28 volunteers on our books. These volunteers lead on the rides and support the riders as well as seeing to the horses after the rides. Volunteers come from schools, colleges, the local community and several retired people. New Lodge RDA has two part time staff who are responsible for the care of the horses. Many of the younger volunteers participate in order to gain D of E awards. We run fundraising events throughout the year where all riders, parents, carers and volunteers can get together and socialise.
The Trustees are aware of their duty to have regard to the commission’s public benefit guidance when making decisions to which the guidance is relevant.
Financial report for year ending 31[st] March 2023
The total income for this year was £29,735 and the total outgoings was £37,575. This left a shortfall of £7,840 which was covered from existing reserves held in the bank. The extra expenditure was in large part due to the purchase of a new horse. Cash funds in the bank at the end of this year were £10,896.
Apart from our regular donors, calendar sales, sponsor a pony scheme and fundraising events the following contributed to the income this year: Royal Greenwich short breaks contract
Waitrose Lesley and Max Davies Hywell Davis Dr A Timothy Greater London RDA
We are also grateful to Hannah Ward and Marco Chardi with his son all of whom organised sponsored events to raise funds.
The main expenditure for this year includes purchase of a New Horse, purchasing the weekend rides under the Greenwich contract, staff wages, hay and feed, National RDA subscription, veterinary fees, first aid training, maintenance and fencing and utilities.
The charity has assets all used to provide the service. These include stables, tractor, fencing, hard standings, security containers, horses, tack and hand washing station. The New Lodge RDA currently has the use of 12 horses and ponies either owned by the charity or on long term loan. The horses cover a wide range to cater for all of our rider’s needs.
The Charity works in partnership with New Lodge Riding Centre. The charity uses the premises free of charge. The Riding school uses the horses on their weekend rides but also
invites the more advanced RDA riders to join these rides. The Riding school pays a share of the cost of keeping the horses and provides the instructor for RDA rides free of charge. This is a long term agreement which has proved very successful over many years.
The New Lodge RDA has a waiting list and no shortage of applications from new riders wanting to access the service. The restriction on the number of rides is currently the lack of coaches but we will hope to expand and increase numbers as soon as possible.
