As a faith-based humanitarian organisation, trustees are selected on the basis of a known and practised Christian faith.  The trustees ensure that all funds donated are used for humanitarian and development purposes, irrespective of the faith or no faith of the beneficiaries. No donations are used for the furtherance of the Christian faith. 

Nearly all trustees and advisors have visited and know Kenya, with a significant percentage continuing to make regular self-funded visits there.

To relieve suffering, sickness and disease among families, widows & orphans in the Nyanza district of Kenya, particularly among those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** Provision of resources and training on health-care, housing, water supplies, sustainable agriculture and education and a community clinic, under the medical supervision of the District Hospital. Amani UK also acts as coordinator for a school’s link programme involving currently 19 UK schools linked to 19 schools in the Nyanza District of Kenya. 

A programme was commenced in 2013 called Keep a Girl in School (KaGiS) providing sanitary towels for girl students to eliminate the many days of study lost during the menstrual cycle, due to not having the **Summary of the main** money to provide adequate hygienic means for themselves. The projects supported by Amani UK are all self-help community projects. As such, a major element of grant making decisions are based on the degree of local initiatives, the practical contribution in implementing and the nature of on-going participation. Through Upendo Foundation, a fully Kenyan NGO founded by Amani UK, there is increased focus on developing a broader base of international support for the projects there, as they currently have Amani UK as sole sponsor. There has been limited success in gaining funding for specific projects, but it continues to be a challenge for longer term core sponsorship. 

The focus continues to be on Income Generating Activities (IGA’s) to assist their core funding requirements.

## Section D                      Achievements and performance 

Our 2022 accounts show a near 20% increase in funding from donors. This increase is wholly as a result of a single significant donation for building work at the Kasimba Lwala Primary School. This consisted of installing a water supply and building a new classroom block, toilets and kitchen. This has made a tremendous improvement to the school. 

This single donation tends to obscure an underlying reduction in unrestricted funding which has reduced the funding we in turn have been able to give towards our core work – the 50 community groups in the Oyugis and Ringa areas in Kenya. The year-end financial position was retrieved by some one-off donations we received at the end of the year. 

During the year we were awarded a grant from the Shalom Trust and this is being used to “invest” in 10 community groups in order to accelerate their progress towards self-sustainability. At the very end of the year we also learnt that we were being awarded a grant from the Mercury Phoenix Trust to help fund our Healthy Choices work with young people relating to the prevention of HIV / AIDS infections. 

Another success during the year was the response to our continuing Buy a Gift for Kenya programme which brought in an increase in income of over 11% compared to 2021. Most of the funds raised through this programme go directly to our core activities. Income for our Keep a Girl in School programme increased by 31% compared to 2021 when exceptional income is excluded. This will be of great help for us to continue supporting our current schools whose numbers are increasing whilst sanitary towel costs are rising sharply. Our income for the Ted Rayner Memorial Clinic was lower than in 2021 but the regular monthly giving remains strong. 

Following the easing of the Covid pandemic, we have resumed visits to Kenya on a small scale. In 2022 we made just the one visit in May and the intention is to make 2 visits in 2023 with full team visits resuming in 2024. This is just one of the fall-outs of the pandemic with another being the difficulty we are having in regaining momentum for our school links programme. Schools in both the UK and Kenya have had to give an even higher priority to their academic work and this has been at the expense of other important initiatives such as learning “first hand” about children from other cultures – a priority of our school links programme. The writing of our own policy documents and our work with the Upendo Foundation (our NGO partner in Kenya) helping them in the creation of their own policy documents is mostly complete. Now we must ensure that these policies are followed and during our May visit we carried out Safeguarding training of the Upendo staff. Thankfully, we have had no safeguarding concerns of our own to report to the trustees during the year.

**Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** 

Amani UK operates without any overheads and is a natural conduit of donations, flowing through to Kenya from the UK. As such there is no requirement for a reserves policy for its totally voluntary UK situation. The Trustees are mindful however of the employee costs we are committed to within the Upendo NGO we support in Kenya and consequently maintain a reserves policy equivalent to a minimum of 3 months to cover these.

Historically Amani UK’s funding has come from individuals and churches. This base continues to expand with the increasing number of both young and mature group visits. As many of the young people go off to university and then on into ever widening areas of employment, so the base of support grows. Amani UK also continues to be successful in obtaining funding support for specific projects through other trusts and charities. **Section**
