A eonsequence of the COVID-19 pandemic was that both CBRL'S Instriutes in the fegion remained
officialty closed to the public in 202012021 with UK4)ased rese*eP*ts unable to travel lo the region
du8 to travel restriciions imposed by FCDO their home instilLrth)n5. C8RL's branth in Easl
Jerusalam, the Kenyon Institute. C￿sIstenI￿ featured wrthin the COLntys'red zone,. at limes mth'r#J
imFKJssible for any stsff exwt the Institute's Dire(*or lo have access the srte during the country'5
three severe lockdovms. Jordan imposed the wc*lds strictest most SLKcessful lockdown initially,
with ￿1 staff working from h¢yne for rn￿$. AJI staff in the UK worked from home. While project-
funded work in Jordan was able to C￿tin￿, progress on S￿ne elements were delayed dug to travgl
restrictions and the possl)ility of holdirrfJ face404ace meetings.
The direct financial impact of the Fockdown measwes ￿sing frryn the Cow&19 pa￿Mie was limited
to the loss of Income from the hostels which could not be run for the ￿ule of the financial yw by the
Instrtutes in East Jwusalem and Amman. A n¢xmd year of hostel r8verwJe wwkl be approximately
£40,000. The majority ol CBRL sPc￿SC￿ed researchers 202012021 wtre unable to ￿dertake resewch
visits, awaiting the lrfting of travel restrictions. CBRL'S two researche￿ funded by UCL'S Nahre
Ne￿Ork were unable to travel from the regi￿ to the UK lo take up their felkhvships witr virtual
