The membership at the end of the 2025 year stood at 65, comprising 0 Full Life Members, 34 Full Members, 31 Associate Members and 0 Honorary Members.
This indicated an increase of 8 members overall including 4 full members, which is encouraging. Recruiting continues to be undertaken.

We have managed to hold 11 meetings, 2 branch meals including our first Pickle Night Dinner and 3 socials throughout the year and attended the National Conference in Portsmouth (14 members, all bar 1 being full members or partners of full members) and the Army v Navy Rugby at Twickenham (15 in attendance - tickets obtained through RNA head Office, & full, & associate). Parades have been attended throughout the year including the 75[th] Anniversary of the RNA Biennial Parade in Whitehall, Aldershot Remembrance Sunday Service, Farnham Remembrance Day Parade and Aldershot Armed Forces Day. We have continued to develop relations with our local Sea Cadets with some members taking part in their awards evening. More details can be found on all our activities in section 8.

Branch Activities
- The Branch had a full and busy 2025. The Branch managed to maintain a full committee throughout the year but have yet to find a suitable President for the Branch and this position is still vacant. All members of the committee worked actively on behalf of the Branch and its members.
The membership of the Branch has increased in numbers with 50% of the new recruits being full members. We continue to welcome full members, associate members with affiliation to the Royal Navy, and those who just enjoy being around the ex-Naval community.
The Standard continues to be paraded where possible and has been present at Remembrance Day services in Aldershot and Farnham, VE Day 80 and VJ Day 80 Parades, Armed Forces Day and at funerals for local naval veterans including Charles “John” Kavanagh, a WWII veteran.
The Branch continue to develop its association with Aldershot Town Football. Shipmate Mick Mills was awarded the clubs Community Champion Award for his work developing the relationship between veterans and the football club, including the veteran’s hub which is supported well by members of the Aldershot RNA and the ae eee! af Ml : c EF) ka 4 Remembrance Day parade. The access to the upstairs function room remains an issue. As a C aa I N ry oa 4 : f workaround we run all our Branch meeting in the ground floor John McGinty Bar, which is fully é i ‘ | 4 accessible. Our socials are held upstairs and we ensure any members who have difficulty on stairs are accompanied on entry and departure from our social events.
To ensure inclusivity our Pickle night is held at an accessible venue to allow all to attend. This was a great success but is not suitable for regular meeting due to its location away from Aldershot.
Part of the Royal Charter states that the Branch should “Further the efficiency and well-being of the Service, preserve its traditions and encourage recruiting” and “foster comradeship and esprit de corps among those who have served or are serving in Her Majesty’s Naval Forces”. The Aldershot Branch are continuing to do this and have tried to include as many RNA members from other branches as possible.
Shipmate Ray Pullen has revamped the Branch website during the year. This now gives the Branch a professional image and acts shop window, highlighting activities and events that the Branch are taking part in. This can be found at rna-aldershot.co.uk.
The Branch also has a facebook page https://www.facebook.com/AldershotRNA which also keeps the Branch membership informed. It currently has 1,300 followers.
We held branch meetings on the last Wednesday of every month except December. These are well attended with an average of 35 members attending. All matters of Branch business are conducted with time to chat and swing the lamp afterwards. Full Minutes are kept by the Secretary on the Branch laptop.

Aldershot Royal Naval Association Annual Report for 2025 presented 28[th] January 2026
The following summary of the years activities shows how we try to engage with the local community, The greater RNA and with our Branch Membership.
We held our AGM at the end of January and were delighted to have S/M Bill Olliphant and S/M Sarah Bewley in attendance to represent head office. Bill addressed the meeting and spoke with members during the social afterwards.
May saw the first event for the year outside of Branch meetings. Fifteen members gathered for the annual Army v Navy Rugby with many travelling up by train to Twickenham. They day was fantastic, and the group made use of the RNA members bar before, during and after the game, celebrating a great win for the Royal Navy, 37-33.
The month of May
saw the inaugural lighting of the new Aldershot Beacon. This event was attended by Standards from all organisations, including our RNA Standard with two escorts, and was held to commemorate D Day 80. It was a fantastic event which was also attended by the local Sea Cadets from TS Swiftsure and TS Diadem. The parade was led by WWII veteran Charles “John” Kavanagh with members of his family, many of whom are members of the Aldershot RNA Branch. A fantastic showing of the senior service in the home of the British Army J
Mid-May saw nine of our members joining with the Aldershot RBL on their trip to the National Memorial Arboretum. A great couple of days was had with two days at the Arboretum with a night of socialising in the middle. It was enjoyed by all and will no doubt be somewhere that those who attended will revisit.
At the end of May we were proud to host the Area 3 Meeting in the EBB Lounge at Aldershot Town Football Club. Our members were encouraged to attend to see what happens at an area meeting. 12 members of the Branch took this opportunity and boosted the numbers to 38 in attendance.
June was a busy month which started off with Victoria Day. We cancelled our gazebo/stall due to the predicted high winds. However, the parade went ahead, and a great day was had by all. The carnival atmosphere and the stop-start nature of the parade is not conducive to us marching but we were still represented and visible on the Veteran’s bus.

Aldershot Royal Naval Association Annual Report for 2025 presented 28[th] January 2026
Our next outing was to the RNA75 Conference in Portsmouth. Twelve of us attended the conference and enjoyed an excellent weekend of activities that accompanied it including, Ceremony of Sunset after a reception on HMS Warrior, a Gala Dinner on the Saturday evening in the boathouse and, following the Sunday service in St Ann’s Church, afternoon tea in the grounds of the 2[nd] Sea Lords House. A few of the local pubs were included during the weekend including of course The Ship Anson, with it RNA discount offer well tested!!
The end of July saw our Armed Forces Day Prom in the Park. This is more of a village fair vibe and our shared stall with the Lenape: as : a oNTAVY 9 LIVEON sieGSRoyal British RBL attracted a few enquiries and af > j * ° led to a new full member joining. mC tee 2 AAT. r* old ASSOCIATION [ee This just proves the point that you must be seen to be known about. =n AR = § A ZZ We took on a challenge to see | . : 4 > fy. We had a refusal from 4 We the Parachute Regiment Association so decorated their cam-net with a few for good measure!! - 7 Ys
End of July saw us host RNA members from Portsea and Portsmouth, Horsham, Woking and Lee on the Solent at our Death of the Tot Night. The usual ceremonies were observed, and it was great to see so many in attendance.
Following the success of the VE Day 80 Beacon Lighting, the council organised a VJ Day 80 in August, which we wholeheartedly supported. Once again, our Standard was front and centre and in the background some of our shipmates were on the organising committee to ensure everything went to plan.
We held our Banyan evening at the end of August, which again was well attended but there is always room for a few more to fit in. Food was plentiful and the drinks flowed freely as we listened to The Everly Others.
September 7[th] saw the community of Rushmoor mark Merchant Navy Day. We were joined by the Sea Cadets from TS Swiftsure and TS Diadem at the short flag raising ceremony. On completion the parade adjourned to a local coffee shop where the RNA Branch hosted all those who attended to a coffee, including the Mayor, Councillors, Council staff who
supported the event and members of the Cadets.

September saw members of RNA Head Office take part in the Race across UK. This was raising funds for the RNRMC, an organisation that helps support the RNA. The Branch voted overwhelmingly to sponsor team Ready N Able and £3,000 was donated to their just giving total.
September 14[th] saw seven Branch members (6 full, 1 Associate) attend the Biennial Parade at Whitehall, London. An early start meant we were not adrift on parade and all the hours of practice ensured we were in step for at least some of the time!! The afternoon was spent at the Civil Service Club and The Union Jack Club chatting to fellow shipmates from all over the country. A fantastic occasion. : _ i, September also saw eight . ot? agmembers of our Branch visit
the RNA in Cobh, Ireland. This was a result of our donation a few years ago for the refurbishment of the HMS Mars graves. Over the weekend they attended a service in the Old Cemetery and a lunch with Branch members.
The last event to celebrate the RNA’s 75October and was the concert with the Fishermen’s Friends in[th] Anniversary took place in 7 . — Portsmouth. The Aldershot Branch had members in the audience and in the RNA Choir on Stage. Three members had been practicing and rehearsing for the event which was a great success and excellent for inter-branch cohesion. The event was attended by members of the Branch
Our big event of the year was our Pickle Night. It was the first one the Branch had organised and was a sell out with 88 members and guests present. Everyone entered the spirit of the occasion and attended in 1805 rig, even the staff at Garretts where the event was held.
The Branch formed their own shanty group for this event consisting of 16 members. In true “SODS Opera” style they opened the night up with a medley of shanties which was well received and showed what can be achieved with a bit of practice. The evening was a great success and was rounded off by a fantastic speech from S/M Andy Christie, National Chairman of the Royal Naval Association. As is tradition now, we retired to the Trafalgar Inn to finish the evening.
Many members of the branch helped during the Poppy Appeal with manning the stands around the town and helped to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. The standard was paraded throughout this period including at the Aldershot Town Football match, The Cenotaph parade in Aldershot and the Farnham parade marching with the sea cadets. We also had many Branch members attend the London Cenotaph, in the RNA element and dotted around with other associations/groups.

In November we held our Horse Racing evening, an event which is always popular, and this year was no exception. The going was firm due to the freezing weather, but the horses still
performed well with the crowd enjoying the racing.
Shipmates from the Branch attended TS Swiftsure’s annual inspection parade and awards evening. Awards were presented by S/M | Martin Maguire (Chairman)
~|
|j j Our last event of the year was our Christmas Meal. A three course, sit down meal for 49 was
held in the EBB Lounge at ATFC. The whole evening was a success and sent the members home full of Christmas spirit.
Throughout the year Branch members have supported the veteran’s hub which is run by the football club. S/M Mick Mills gave a talk on life in the RN to the mainly Army crowd which was very well received. The football also runs a wellness and wellbeing drop in which our welfare rep was asked to attend and run a stand. We did actually get a few ex-RN visit the event which was great to see.
The Branch members also regularly support the local RBL coffee mornings, the monthly veterans breakfast, the nosh nights, in fact most of these activities are organised by various full members of the Branch.
The Branch also purchased a new gazebo designed to highlight our organisation within the community. As Aldershot has been awarded the National Armed Forces Day in 2026 we hope to make full use of this to get us seen not just locally, but on the national stage.
As well as the usual monthly meetings the Branch also has a full programme of events planned for next year including:
-
March – Area 4 Reunion in Bideford
-
May – Army v Navy Rugby
-
June – Victoria Day, RNA Conference in Salford, National Armed Forces Day in Aldershot.
-
July – Branch Death of the Tot
-
August – Branch Banyan
-
October – Branch Trafalgar Night Dinner
-
November – Branch Horse Racing
-
December – Branch Xmas Meal
Following the lead highlighted in the RNA’s Semaphore, we are also hoping to run our first Chairmans Day.

From the RNA National Chairman following the Branch Pickle Night
I just wanted to thank you all for a superb evening and for the lovely gifts you presented me with at the end of the evening. Also massive thanks to you all for your kind hospitality and ‘Pickle’ Dress which will not be surpassed. The Choir deserve huge accolades for all their efforts and keeping in tune……. You all deserve a massive BZ for a fun evening. (S/M Andy Christie)
These are but a few of the comments we have received over the year and the committee will strive to ensure this continues. Feedback such as this is why we believe we are achieving the “7 C’s” set out by the Royal Naval Association on page 4 of this report.
Financial Review
- Within the last financial year, the Branch made a loss of £2,057.49 within the main Branch account . This was due to the purchase of the new Branch Gazebo (£1550) and the donation to Area 3 (£645). The Account was also used for the collection of branch membership subscriptions and the Xmas Dinner Accounts.
The Branch Committee has continued to ensure the legacy from S/M Don Watson is working for the Branch and that it will enable the Branch to support the objectives of the Association. The Legacy was received and is being treated as unrestricted funds but designated. The fund is operated within locally produced standard operating procedures which were approved by RNA HQ and reviewed annually by the Branch Committee. Any amendments to these procedures have to be proposed and agreed at the Branch AGM in January. The markets have continued to be volatile but this year the investment in Blackrock made a profit of £19,595.94 . During 2025 a sum of £10,000 was drawn down against the investment and the shares figure as at midday on 31[st] December 2025 was £166,922.38 . Taking into account all income and expenditure throughout the year The Don Watson fund showed an increase of £8,085.95 in assets overall.
Combining both the Branch Account and the Don Watson Fund the Branch made an overall profit of £6,028.46
Resources Review
- As stated elsewhere in this annual report we are using the one-off legacy donation within the rules of the Royal Naval Association and the local rules within the Branch.

Aldershot Royal Naval Association Annual Report for 2025 presented 28[th] January 2026
Reserves Policy
- In 2017 the Branch invested £150,000 of the Don Watson Legacy in an approved Investment Fund, The Armed Forces Common Investment Fund, with Black Rock. This investment currently stands at £166,922.38 (as at 31-12-25). £10,000 of funds were withdrawn from the investment during 2025 to the main bank account of the Branch.
Each year the Branch allocates £3000 per year for welfare cases for persons associated to the Navy who live in the Rushmoor area. These have to be recommended through the assessments undertaken by SSAFA. There were no requests for funding from the local SSAFA representatives during 2025. SSAFA were reminded of the availability of this funding during 2025. The Branch did donate £3,000 to the RNRMC via the RNA HO team that took part in The Race across the UK
The main Branch fund will remain stand alone for day-to-day expenses and running costs.
Investments
- During 2017 the Branch invested £150,000 in an approved investment fund with Black Rock. The closing balance of the account on the 31[st] December 2025 was £166,922.38. A total of £19,595.94 was gained in the market during 2025 on this investment. Since investing 8 ½ years ago the following withdrawls have been made :- 2018 - £8,000 transfer to Branch Fund, 2019 - £15,000 transfer to Branch Fund, 2022 - £15,000 transfer to Branch Fund, 2023 - £5,000 transfer to Branch Fund, 2024 - £10,000 transfer to Branch Fund, 2025 - £10,000 transfer to Branch Fund A total of £63,000 withdrawn the fund.
This means the fund is returning approx. £2,350.65 per quarter (over 34 quarters). ((£16,922.38 + £63,000) / 34) or an average of £9,402.60 per year, although some years are better than others due to the volatility of the markets.
The Branch has drawn down £63,000 which is equivalent to £1,852.94 per quarter or £7,411 per year, less than what is being returned from the assets.
The above means that the Branch is undertaking and funding all it does whilst the funds are remaining mainly constant.
Annual Accounts
- The main element of the Accounts for the year ended 31 December 2025 is the Statement of Financial Activities for the year, which is an annex to this report.
Public Benefit
- The Trustees confirm that they have taken due regard of the guidance contained in the Charity Commissions guidance on public benefit, set in ‘Charities and the Public Benefit – Section G’, when reviewing the Charity’s aims and objectives; and in planning future activities and setting the grant making policy for the year.
12 | P a g e
Aldershot Royal Naval Association Annual Report for 2025 presented 28[th] January 2026
Risk Management
- The Branch recognises that it now has a risk to manage due to the Don Watson Legacy. This is controlled under the Branch Policy for Funding (SOPs) and a revised 10 year forecast is produced each year. We also recognise the need for multiple signatories to be in place to prevent misappropriation of funds. In order to mitigate the risk associated with a substantial legacy managed by inexperienced volunteer trustees, during its inception in 2016/17 advice on each stage was taken from Captain Paul Quinn OBE MSC BA CDpAF FCIPD FCMI FHI MCIPS RN(Rtd), then General Secretary of the Royal Naval Association (Charity 22982) - with face to face meetings as required. Captain Quinn saw and agreed with the Branch Policy for Funding and the 2017 10-year plan – and certified then as in accordance with the charitable objects of the RNA under the 1990 Supplemental Royal charter as amended in 2016 and approved by the Privy Council of Her Majesty the Queen.
Plans for the Future
-
The aims and objectives of the Branch Committee for the forthcoming year are:
-
a. To continue to increase membership of the Aldershot Branch through publicity and awareness.
-
b. To continue to uphold Naval traditions by the running of the Death of the Tot, Banyan, Flight Deck Horse Racing and a Pickle Night or Trafalgar Night Dinner and inviting more local RNA’s to the occasions.
-
c. To run the Don Watson Account in accordance with the Royal Charter through the Branch Steering Group.
-
d. To ensure that the future of the Aldershot Branch is on a sound footing.
-
e. To enable all Branch members to be aware of and attend RNA functions throughout the year.
-
f. To continue to improve links with the local Sea Cadet Unit, TS Swiftsure.
-
g. To ensure the Branch and the National RNA have a prominent role in the National Armed Forces Day when it is held in Aldershot in June 2026
