Report of the Trustees for the year ending March 2021
Structure, Governance and Management
The charity's constitution was adopted on 7 November 1998.
Trustees
The current trustees are MGF Currie, JG Aldous, RMA England and RNF Currie
All the trustees were elected on 19 April 2017. The elected trustees are very familiar with the workings of the charity, three having previously been trustees when the charity was formed. New trustees are invited to attend a meeting with the chairman to familiarise themselves with the charity.
Objects and activities
The objects of the Friends are to maintain, restore and preserve for the benefit of the public the furnishings of the parish church and churchyard of All Saints, Hitcham in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and, in so doing, preserve and protect the church as a place of Christian worship and as the architectural centerpiece of the village of Hitcham.
To meet these objectives the Friends fund raise on behalf of Hitcham Parochial Church Council (PCC) and have a membership subscription.
Performance
The charity, on behalf of and working with the PCC, had secured a National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) Grant of £100,000 in 2019 for the first part of the Tower Project called: ‘Restoring Henslow’s Bells’. The COVID 19 pandemic halted this work at the end of March 2020. The bells therefore did

not return until November and the rest of the work was completed by the 27 February 2021 meeting the NLHF deadline with one day to spare when the remainder of the NLHF grant was paid in full. The contractors were John Taylor Bell Founders, Bishops of Ipswich organ builders and Cubitt Theobald Ltd, chartered builders.
In July 2020 the Friends secured a grant of £68,293 from Viridor Credits Ltd for ‘The Evolootion of Hitcham Church’, building an equal access WC and servery within the new tower room and connecting the building to the main sewer. It also paid to update all the lighting to LED fittings along with 28 folding conference chairs and storage trolley. This work was completed on 30 March 2021 finishing the Tower Project. The work was carried out by Cubitt Theobald Ltd .This has made the building functional for wider community use and will facilitate future fund raising.
The Trustees continue to work with the PCC on maintenance and on-going repairs. The Tower Project exposed serious leaks in the west window. Work on this will start in April 2021. The top step to the vestry door is dangerous, this will be replaced in May.
The charity also supported the PCC with maintenance costs of £130 and a contribution of £600 towards the cost of the insurance.
Financial Review
Annual membership subscriptions are £12/person /year or £18 per family. Life time membership is closed to new members. The Friends received £67,194 in grants from charities, £7,898 in donations with a pledge of £3,000 in the process of being claimed at the year end. The Viridor Credits Grant was largely paid direct to the qualifying contractors net of VAT.
Donations ‘in memoriam’
There were no donations in memoriam this year.
Reserves Policy
The charity’s primary source of income is the membership subscriptions.
The WC Project funds were transferred out of the Nationwide 95 Day Savings Account which is being kept open with a balance of £95. On completion of both projects a balance of £27,126 remains in the Nationwide Instant Access Saving Account. This is largely as a result of the huge amount of work carried out by the volunteers with over 2000 hours work recorded, making significant savings.
ACCLA COIF Charities investment fund holding created from the balance of a legacy from Dr Fisher is set up as a long term investment to ensure an income for running repairs. Now that the Tower Project is completed the aim is to build on this fund and add any future legacies to it.
