DIFFICULT AIRWAY SOCIETY
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2024
Respective responstbilities of management committee and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charl￿S trustees
consider that an audit is not required for this year under Section 4312) of the Charities Act 1993
and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
Examine the accounts (under section 43(3){al of the 1993 Act);
Follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity
Commissioners (under Sertion 4317)Ib) of the 1993 Art)- and
State whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examinerfs report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity
Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity
and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in

Law applicable to charities in England and Wale5 requires the management committee to
prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them tonslstently:
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent-
state whether the policies adopted are in accordance with Statement of Recommended Practice
"Accounting for Charities" and with applicable Accounting Standards. 5ubjert to any material
departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements:
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to
assume that the charity will continue in operation.
The management comrnittee are responsible for keeping proper ètcounting records which disclose
with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial p051tion of the charity and to enable them to
ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act. They are also
responsible for Safeguarding the assets of the charity ènd hence for taking rea50nable steps
for the prevention and detection of fraud or other irregularities

The Management Committee were not entitled to and received no remuneration from the charity
during the year.

Welcome and apologies- RB
RB welcomed everyone to the meeting.
RB referred to last yearfs minutes, stating that electronic copies are available.
RB delivered a brief outline of the meeting.
Approval of last meetin¢s minutes - RB
There are electronic meeting minutes to be distributed.
At the AMM in Birmingham (29th November- 1st December 20231, 28 DAS members attended,
representing less than 1% of total membership.

At the AMM in London {28 - 29 November 20241, 11 members were in attendance.
RB recognised that DAS members need to be encouraged to attend future AMMS.
Executive committee - RB
IA and RB are coming to the end of their term5 on the DAS committee.
FM will remain on the committee for a further two years.

IA is to finish his term as President on the 1st January 2025 and was pleased to announce that
Alistair McNarry has been elected as the new President of DAS.
RB has been elected as Secretary again for a second term. Around IO% of DAS membership voted in
the election which is roughly the same as in previous years.
DAS Professorship- IA and KEB
IA announces the appointment of the DAS Professorship and noted the amount of work involved in
this with recognition of it being a difficult, time-consuming process.
KEB elaborates that the process is rigorous and takes many months, noting that five- six DAS
committee members review the application form, with a minimum of two external reviewers, and a
minimum of two referees.
KEB announces that Alistair McNarry is now Professor McNarry and the Professorship is awarded
with recognition of achievements and contributions to the speciality.
IA gives congratulations.
DAS Education - IA
DAS Education is led by KE8, GD, and TL.
IA noted recognition of three webinars run by GD in 2024, with healthy registration at each, and
references webinars planned for 2025.
DAS Publications- IA
The DAS ethic5 guidelines/statement will be available on DAS website shortly.
IA noted that DAS'S Spine Injury guidelines were published in Anaesthesia earlier this year, with
other bodies.
Intubation Guldellnes - IA
There will be an update on the Intubation guidelines at the 2024 ASM. IA noted there is less than
year before publication date.
IA noted work on other guidelines such as Ethics. and collaborative work with other societies on
Paeds guidelines.

Collaborations- IA
Last year DAS collaborated with all major airway societies. DAS (co)-organised RAM in Borneo and
contributed to many global events in 2024.
WAAM will be taking place in Florence, 5-8th November 2025.
Patient Oriented work- IA
IA noted KR'S phenomenal work on patient inforrnation which is available on DAS website.
Airway Leads- IA
Sandeep Sudan (SS) will be hosting an Airway Leads day in March 2025.
DAS Ventures- IA
IA noted further DAS ventures such as the Airway Database. Collaborative Webinars, DAS Fellows,
and the ATOM Project.
Farewells- IA
IA noted his thanks to committee members who have come to the end of their term

Abhijoy Chakladar- his work as Sur4ey Coordinator

Secretarfs Report- RB
Resident Representative
RB noted that as MMM is stepping down there was a rigorous interview process for the new
Resident representative. Ten application5 were received, five of whom were interviewed.

RB was pleased to announce the appointment of Naomi Gostelow {NG) DAS'S new Resident
representative. Nisha Abraham-Thomas will be staying on the committee as Resident representative
for a further year.
Awards- RB
RB noted that awards were presented at the DAS Gala Dinner.
The McEwen Medal was awarded to Dr Mary Mushambi.
The Adrian Pearce Award inaugural recipient was Mark Stacev.
Constltution - RB
The OAS constitution has been updated following a review scheduled every five to seven years. It ha5
been six years since the last review took place; this involved updating terminolo￿ and clarity. The
Executive Committee worked together over the summer with AMCN contributing significantly to the
proces5 of updating the constitution.
eFONAr Registry- RB and AMCN
The registry is close to going live in the next couple of months, following many unexpected problems
along the way. Proper ethical approval gained in England and Wales, with kotland and Northern
Ireland believed to follow.
RB thanks AMCN for the update.
2024 Trainee Infographic Compet6tion- RB
RB commended the Trainee Infographic Competition winners, Dr Marcus Hands and Dr Jan Hansel.
Other entries praised for high quality.
Treasurerfs Report- FM
FM presented the figures from the end of the financial year130th June).
The main expenditures were the new DAS website, the new CRM system delivered by Veryconnect,
designed to provide a safer, more confidential system for holding DAS user data. A further
expenditure was on the DAS Database which will provide a secure platform for patient data.

DAS ASM- FM
The DAS London ASM 2024 is a fully booked event, with 700 delegates which is the maximum
capacity.
FM noted that the next DAS ASM 2026 will be held in Wales.
DAS Membership- FM
FM noted that DAS Membership is currently at a total of 2447. In 2024 DAS have received 346 new
members.
NEW DAS WEBSITE - RB
The new DAS website is live with new content being added and developments still taking place. It is
a much nicer, fresher, easier experience for members to join and navigate.

Scientific Officer Report- RB
RB note5 that KEB had to leave to attend another meeting, so RB presents KEB'S report.
DAS Fellows
RB noted that this will be going live and both on the website and emailed to all members.
National DAS project
This project 15 Still ongoing with updates to come, and progress still being made.
DAS Grants
Three DAS direct grant applications made this year, one for £IOOO which was rejected, one for £5000
in interim stage, and one for £14,000.
RB welcomed ideas for future grants and to contact KEB.
