This year we have been privileged to connect with 1,594 young people in school, church and community settings within the town of Burton-on-Trent.
We have spent 1,807 staffing hours being with children and young people, the majority of whom have been aged between 11-16.
Although it may sound simple, I believe that a big part of our achievement this year has been in remaining…
-
remaining steadfast in the belief that young people have great value to God,
-
remaining relational in the way we connect with young people, remaining available to serve and be reactive to needs that arise, remaining open to God and taking time out to listen as a team.
‘Remain in me’ Jesus said, “and I will remain in you.”
All this ‘remaining’ makes for a lot of connections, creating something solid and strong that young people can put their trust in. We have grown in our understanding of who we are and what we can offer, and how valuable this offer is.
We’ve also been challenged about our role regarding the discipleship of young people. This has led to a more intentional way of working such as:
-
partnering with Churches wherever possible when delivering open access youth/children’s work,
-
offering discipleship opportunities such as Youth Alpha that can be a standalone group, or work alongside an existing youth ministry, offering support to existing Church youth ministries
Overall, we have delivered a consistent and high-quality service that has supported the holistic development of children and young people in Burton-on-Trent.

SCHOOL
Our school's work is available to all, but it is a school’s choice to access our offer. Our work usually grows organically through relationships, enabling us to build trust and understand the needs of each school more fully.
THIS YEAR WE HAVE WORKED WITH 10 EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENTS:
| Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Voluntary Academy |
Burton and South Derbyshire College |
|---|---|
| Burton Fields Primary School | The deFerrers Academy |
| Eagles Nest Project | Holy Rosary Catholic Primary Academy |
| Holy Trinity C of E Primary | John of Rolleston Primary |
| Paget High School | Paulet High School |
PAULET BREAKFAST CLUB
This work is seen as part of the school’s wellbeing offer and involves the ministry of noticing and giving significance to a young person during the initial half hour of being on the school premises. (8 – 8.30am).
ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION
We continued to support Eagles’ Nest Project with our staff supporting young people in almost a one-to-one environment as they learn new skills, and work towards a qualification in cooking, and alpaca care.
Nathan and Matt have also delivered alternative education with Burton Albion Community Trust, using animation and sport.
LISTENING SERVICE
We deliver a weekly listening service into Paulet High School. This is usually up to 6 half hour sessions during the school day. Over the year we have intentionally listened to 31 different young people over 163 separate sessions.
When asked if anything has changed because of a listening session, young people said...
“I’ve been able to sleep a “A lot has changed. It’s really helped me think of a few things I can do lot more. It’s helped me to solve some issues. I’ve become less stressed with things that would focus better.” stress me out because I had the opportunity to get it off my chest.”

RE LESSONS
We were asked to share why Jesus is important to us personally as part of an Ethics and Philosophy lesson with year 9s at Paulet High School. There were some great questions from the young people, and some interesting learning captured. It was interesting to hear their response to the cartoon called ‘the judge and his friend’ that uses a story to illustrate how Jesus paid for our mistakes so we can be forgiven. Many of the young people felt that it wasn’t fair that the judge should let a criminal off for what they’d done. ‘What will he learn?’ they asked. Some said they’d feel guilty if someone else paid for them.
“Chatting with one young person - they said their family was religious and that they talk about a messenger. They felt there was something real in it all as they explained that they and their mum have had troubles and there's always been a way through. I was able to share about how I believed in the Holy Spirit and how He helps me each day. It was good to be able to encourage them to keep asking questions and to continue seeking for themselves.”
SMALL GROUPS
We have been involved in 4 High Schools and have delivered 80 small group sessions. Each is bespoke to the needs of the school and the young people. This means single sex and mixed groups, covering topics such as friendship, online safety, anger management, anxiety and character development. We have also supported young people who have struggled returning to school due to anxiety, caring responsibilities and health issues.
Our approach is still relational, creating space to listen and enable understanding to grow. The overwhelming message we get from the young people is that the groups are not long enough!
“Helpful, amazing. Brilliant, fantastic!”
YOUNG PERSON GIRLS GROUP
- “This group has taught me SELF love.”
YOUNG PERSON GIRLS GROUP
- "Everyone gets an opinion and a chance to speak."
YOUNG PERSON CHARACTER GROUP
In Paget we delivered a new programme, ‘Learning to fly' with 8 girls who had been involved in some bullying incidents. Topics included aspiration, emotions and healthy friendships. The group were attentive and engaged well. One even applied to Junior British Bake Off following a session looking at goal setting. The last time we met was emotional, and the girls asked if we could come back again. Two of the girls came to the Warehouse Youth Club that night. They had a great time and even tried skateboarding. We look forward to seeing them become ambassadors of model behaviour in their school.

ASSEMBLIES
Schools remained cautious about returning to in person assemblies, but we were asked to continue online every month with Holy Trinity Primary School. Themes included friendship, new life and the Lord’s prayer.
COLLEGE CHAPLAINCY LUNCHTIME
This restarted at Burton and South Derbyshire College after a very long break due to COVID. We partner with Riverside Church to spend one lunch time a week being available to students and staff for discussion, wellbeing support and prayer. There’s always a question of the week and a free lolly! After such a long break it has taken a while to grow new relationships, but by the end of the year Nathan and Becky (Riversides youth worker) have a regular group of 20 students who check in with them each week.
ONE TO ONES
We were able to support 11 young people within a primary or high school setting this year through a weekly one to one meeting. Activities have varied greatly and are specific to each young person’s needs. Support has included: a sensory break from the classroom using play and creativity, mentoring sessions, setting goals in behaviour and learning attitudes, providing a safe space/adult outside of the family to chat with, and alternative education in a care setting. We know that consistent safe role models can make a huge difference to young lives as they grow, so it’s a real privilege to have this opportunity to invest in their development.

CHURCH
We have a huge heart for the local Church and love to serve it. We can deliver talks and presentations, facilitate training and support the development and delivery of youth and children's work.
THIS YEAR WE HAVE CONNECTED WITH 16 CHURCHES THROUGH DELIVERING YOUTH/CHILDREN'S WORK, USING THEIR BUILDINGS, OR MEETING WITH THEIR YOUNG PEOPLE AT OUR MONHTLY YOUTH EVENTS.
| All Saints | Burton Elim Church |
|---|---|
| Burton Family Church | Kingdom Advanced Network |
| Riverside | St James |

STARBUDS – TOWN WIDE YOUTH EVENTS
This is our monthly town wide youth event aimed at young people connected with churches. Our hope is that the ones and twos from individual churches can see they are part of something bigger and be encouraged in their faith development.
We have seen 76 young people from 15 different Churches over 8 separate events.
This year we have seen the greatest mix of young people from across the town deciding to join us – from church youth groups, our open access youth clubs and our one-to-one support work.
In September we began with a mini festival style night, offering space for young people to share their concerns and prayers. In December we held a Silent Disco giving an opportunity to respond to finding out more about Jesus. We held a quiz night in January, whilst in April we put on an Easter Extravaganza involving a lot of chocolate! The final event of the year saw us trial out a paint party. This was beautifully messy with a reflective moment to hear from God for ourselves.
‘At the Silent Disco there was a lot of laughter, as we were able to dance and let our hair down together for the first time in ages. Throughout the evening there were personal stories from the team explaining why they followed Jesus. These were played on the screens and through the headphones and young people could choose to listen to them. Halfway through we played a crazy Christmas tree‘ game before listening to Matt share his story about faith and how he felt his life was better with God than without him. Gifted with a gingerbread biscuit we were all given an opportunity to find out more by filling in a small card. Fifteen young people said they would like to know more and were invited along to the Youth Alpha group.’
Our three Starbuds Extra evenings were aimed at young people who want to go a little deeper in their Christian faith. We were able to offer a campfire worship evening, using the imagery of fire and light to focus on the Holy Spirit; an audio prayer trail, giving space for young people to listen to spoken reflections on their own phones and meet with God in various ways, and a Jubilee themed afternoon tea and worship service where we explored our friendship with God.
We would like to thank Riverside Church, St. Mary’s, The Community Church, St. Modwen’s, and Burton Elim Church for allowing us free use of their buildings. Without this support, we wouldn’t be able to run the events.
"it was an amazing experience to get away and experience new ways of praying and freeing my mind of bad thoughts. I really did enjoy it a lot and would love to do something like this again."
YOUNG PERSON PRAYER NIGHT
“Seeing 40 young people and their youth leaders laughing and having fun together within the playfulness of throwing powder paint over each other was brilliant! There was a sense of healing as we were given permission to be messy and childlike.”

VOLUNTEERING WITHIN THE LOCAL CHURCH
All our staff team are active members of local Churches and are involved in leading and supporting on a weekly basis. Although not directly undertaken by Youth for Christ, our staff make full use of their training and experience to add value to the local church, benefiting even more young people.
During the summer the whole team volunteered their time to take 30 local 11-25s to the Limitless Festival at Stafford Showground as part of their church’s youth and young adults ministry. It was an encouraging time, giving the opportunity to reconnect with God for themselves and enjoy the freedom of being amongst so many other young people. Two young people decided to follow Jesus for the first time.

YOUTH ALPHA
This was a new town-wide group that met weekly for several sessions to explore questions around Christianity and personal faith. It came out of a growing desire from within the team to give an open opportunity for young people to question and find out about the Christian faith for themselves - no matter what their background. Eight young people attended overall. Most of these young people were not from a Church background and came from 5 different schools. In March we had an away day at Whitemoor Lakes. Five young people joined in with a ‘leap of faith’ activity - stretching their trust muscles and overcoming personal fears before watching two videos about the Holy Spirit, eating lunch and taking time to reflect and respond if they wanted to. The atmosphere was one of encouragement and support, meaning that all grew in confidence from the activities.
We’re very grateful to St Werburgh’s Church, Derby who gave the monies for our food and day away costs, and to Whitemoor Lakes who were really accommodating and took good care of us - thank you!
“After the second video I really wanted to feel the Holy Spirit present with me and decided to pray with someone. I talked a lot about other things and then we prayed. I prayed out loud. I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. I feel different.”
CHURCH SUPPORT
We were able to offer fortnightly staffing support from April to July to Riverside Church’s youth group. The group has grown in number over the year, so it was great to serve them as they looked to increase their volunteer team.
We were asked to come alongside the Churches and community of Barton under Needwood to look at wellbeing support for young people within the village and possible ways the Churches could begin a youth work there. This also involved talks with John Taylor High School, but unfortunately our offer there was declined for now. St James Church, however, began to move forward in their planning to start a new youth group in the Autumn term.
In May Nathan supported the Lichfield Diocesan Board of Education in their delivery of a primary schools project called Inspire within Lichfield Cathedral.

COMMUNITY
For some young people our open access work is the only activity they take part in outside of school. We believe this consistent presence is the first step in reflecting God’s faithfulness to young people in a continuously changing world.
WE HAVE WORKED WITH 6 OTHER ORGANISATIONS

DETACHED
Detached youth work is about going to where young people are. In this case, Nathan goes to support Burton Albion Community Trust once a week with their KICKS football project on Heath Road Park, Stapenhill. This involves being available on a Monday evening to play football and hang out with young people. It gives us another chance to connect with those we see in school but on their turf.
YOUTH CLUBS
This year our youth clubs have continued to flourish in numbers. We’ve served 172 different young people over 69 sessions at 2 venues.
The Warehouse Youth Club and Skate Park runs in partnership with Riverside Church in the town centre every Wednesday during term time for 10 to 17s.
Stapenhill Youth Drop-in runs with support from The Community Church at the Number One Community building every Friday during term time for 11 to 17s.
The youth clubs allow young people to choose what they want to engage in and include games, food, skateboarding on a Wednesday, arts and crafts and informal wellbeing support. There have been some challenges with behaviour and mental health, but overall, we’ve connected positively with young people from several schools and differing backgrounds. Our relational approach means that some young people have been given the opportunity to openup to the team, enabling us to understand more of their story and support them where needed. This is a privilege but is costly in terms of emotional energy - and so we rely on God’s strength to equip us for whatever happens!
Having listened to a young person at a youth club one week, it appeared obvious that they might need some support via school to help them explore something they felt was affecting their learning and focus. Our team were able to chat openly about their concerns with them and offer support if that was what they wanted. We also see the same young person in school, and one morning they came to ask us for support in speaking to the relevant staff member. We wereYOUNG PERSON YOUTH ALPHA able to explain the situation to the teacher until the young person felt able to continue with their own words, which they did. The concern they brought had been worrying them for a year or more, but they hadn’t felt able to share it. When they were asked why they’d spoken out at the youth club to our team, the young person said, “I guess I just felt safe.
ONE TO ONES
We have offered ‘being with’ support to 10 young people within a community setting on a oneto-one basis this year. We’ve provided a safe adult for a young person to meet up with weekly or when needed. This has enabled young people the opportunity to chat through concerns, to play, to learn budgeting and even get their weekly food shopping done.
“For one young person we couldn’t change their circumstances for them or resolve their issues, but we could be a constant within the chaos.”
MATT RIMMER
HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES
It’s been brilliant to partner with so many volunteers and churches around Burton to deliver 21 holiday activity sessions for children and young people this year. We’d particularly like to thank St. Mary’s Church , Riverside Church and The Community Church. 164 different 4 to 17 year-olds joined in with games, sports, crafts, cooking and chatting across three venues. The primary age groups also had moments of reflection around a biblical theme, giving chance to respond in creative ways, whilst our older groups maximised on the extra time and space to build positive relationships.
GIRLS DAYS
We held three Saturday events, aiming to create a safe space with an atmosphere of shared hope for girls to explore who they are within a mutually supportive environment. The days included partnering with Antonia Jolley’s Self Love Club art workshops in the morning - designing tote bags, painting pots and canvases. This gave everyone involved a chance to start from the same place; to relax and chat whilst being creative. We would then make lunch and eat together before spending time discussing and reflecting on current issues such as our uniqueness, aspirations and friendship.
Funding was through the Doing Our Bit Fund and in response to parents seeking more social and emotional support for their children coming out of COVID-19.
The girls who attended demonstrated some great problem-solving skills as well as encouraging one another along the way. It’s been brilliant to spend an extended amount of time with them outside of school and other youth clubs.
For our first day we had to come up with three words to describe ourselves. Here’s a few…
“I am an affectionate, “I am a smiley, brave “I am a brave, adventurous, empathetic, passionate creation.” positive youth.” powerful teenage leader.” YOUNG PERSON YOUNG PERSON YOUNG PERSON
A SPECIAL DAY OUT
We were fortunate to be invited by The Community Foundation to the garden party at Staffordshire Showground to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee and recognise the service of so many within the County during the Covid pandemic. It was quite humbling to parade around the showground with so many other charities and to give thanks. The Lord-Lieutenant read out a letter addressed to us all from the Queen, followed by an afternoon tea.

TEAM
Our staff team are an incredibly committed group - passionate about God and young people. We are particularly thankful for the retention of staff and the stability and strength this gives to the centre.
Our team meet weekly to pray, plan the week and share good practise. This year we have studied books looking at leadership and spiritual disciplines.
Staff
Sue Garb as full-time Centre Director,
-
Sue Jolley as part-time team administrator and representative,
-
Matt Rimmer as full-time Youth Work Lead,
-
Nathan O’Neill as full-time Youth and Children’s Outreach Worker.
-
Dee Grewal as part-time Girls Work Lead.
Dee’s contract came to an end in August, and she decided to move on to new adventures in the USA. Unfortunately, we have been unable to raise enough funds to replace her.
Students
In the summer term we were pleased to provide a placement for Rachel AllenWhetton as part of the final year of her Health and Social Care Degree with Derby University. She passed with flying colours and when asked how she found the experience, Rachel said “I’ve enjoyed it and felt very comfortable with the team. The work is quite varied and gives me opportunities that I didn’t know were available. In the future I would like to support young people with their mental health.”
VOLUNTEERS
We could not do what we do without our partners and volunteers - people willing to step out and give their time and energy for others. This year we have seen 24 people volunteering as well as our 5 trustees. 12 have volunteered through partner churches and 5 have been under 18 years old. Thank you so much!
TRUSTEES AND COUNCIL OF REFERENCE
Our Trustees meet bi-monthly, making legal, financial and HR decisions. Our Council of Reference support staff pastorally in their duties and give wise council when needed.
Our Trustees:
- Daniel Parker – Chair Frank Startin – Treasurer Esther Williams – Secretary Neil Pacey Patrick Lowe
Within our Trustee body there are four local Churches represented. We give thanks to Esther and Patrick for their generous service to us as they stepped down in February and July respectively.
Our Council of Reference:
- Dawn Charles Rev. George Crossley
FUNDRAISING
Quiz Night
There were many laughs at our first quiz night fundraiser in November alongside some great curry and good company. Elim Church hosted, and local businesses generously donated some wonderful prizes which helped us raise over £400 towards the ongoing costs of our youth club work.
Dee’s £1 Challenge
This was an email and social media fundraiser created by Dee, asking people to give £1 towards the work of Burton Youth For Christ within the town. We have seen an extra £1000+ come in through this venture.
TRAINING
For the second year running our National conference in January was cancelled due to COVID worries. Being together with other centres from around the country is always an uplifting experience, as well as giving us a few days to physically remove ourselves from the usual. Sue G felt it would be wise to use the time to create our own retreat for a couple of nights. Sue J jumped into action and found us a quirky cottage in Alton, where we were able to spend time eating together, walking, listening to God for ourselves and each other, and resetting for the year ahead. We believe that this time benefited the team in many ways - which ultimately benefits the young people in our town.
Staff and volunteers have taken part in and completed:
-
First Aid at work
-
Level 1 and 3 safeguarding
-
Level 2 Intermediate Self-harm Awareness
The trustees and team have reviewed and updated various systems and policies during the year.
This has included our policies concerning:
-
Volunteering
-
Recruitment
-
Whistle blowing
-
Safeguarding
-
Financial Policy National Youth for Christ Charter Agreement.
Our insurance was renewed in April with Ansvar Insurance.
The Trustees met six times during the year, including our Annual General Meeting.
To make decisions well and confidently, trustees use a rolling yearly cash flow plan, enabling us to see and identify patterns within our finances more clearly and plan accordingly.
Our annual income was £ 81,423
Our outgoings were £99,195
We increased staffing in August 2021 due to extra funding we acquired during COVID and budgeted to overspend by £10,000. Unfortunately, the overspend was higher than expected due to unsuccessful funding bids.
We are very grateful and pleased to report that individual giving by standing orders has remained similar at £28,943, but one-off gifts from individuals decreased by 69% to £861.
Alongside the Gift Aid of £6,406, this support gives us the freedom to plan well and have greater fluidity to adapt to the needs around us.
Church giving increased by 11% to £4,598.
Our invoiced income has totalled £20,831 this year from work completed through schools. This is a slight decrease of 4% on the previous year.
We also give thanks for the £18,098 we have received in grants during the last twelve months. Grants were received from:
-
Fare share – Tesco & Asda food for youth clubs
-
Burton Transformation Trust – Youth Alpha
-
St Werburgh’s – Youth Alpha
-
Burton Consolidated Charities – Core costs
-
J and O Lloyd – Youth Club staffing for The Warehouse
-
Baron Davenport – Youth Club staffing for Stapenhill Drop-in
-
Staffordshire Council Voluntary Youth Services – one to one mentoring Newstart – Starbuds youth events
-
DPR Controls– Lego programming kits
-
County Councillor Fund – youth club resources
-
Government Furlough Job retention Scheme
Compared to previous years, this has been our least successful in terms of funding applications, applying to 15 funding bodies for a total of £60,000.
The Centre Director works alongside Trustees to create a funding strategy. This aims to build positive relationships with churches, individuals and grant givers who understand the needs of young people and are willing to give resources and funds to improve sustainability alongside one off grants. This also includes seeking out new partnerships with other local organisations as well as continuing with those we already have. Our heart is to invest in young people for the long term, not just follow money attached to specific projects.
RESERVES POLICY
The Trustees reviewed their amount of funds kept in reserve, (those not committed or invested in tangible fixed assets) and agreed to keep 3 months for this year. The Trustees will continue to review the policy as funding streams become more certain during the 2022/23 financial year and beyond.

We accept there are challenges, especially in terms of capacity and financial sustainability, but we continue to be thankful for every opportunity we have to serve young people. We know that we are not alone and will continue to remain in Him.
Our priorities moving forward are to:
-
increase inclusion and accessibility so that more young people can benefit grow and invest in a core group of young leaders and volunteers
-
increase discipleship opportunities for young people wanting to grow in the Christian faith
-
encourage and support Churches to discover, recognise and use their unique strengths in outreach to young people communicate more effectively, increasing our overall sustainability.
This is our direction of travel. We know it will be a step by step journey, but we’re committed.
"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
PSALM 32 V 8
Thank you to all those who have continued to stand with us in believing in young people. For the consistency of those who pray, volunteer, and give – thank you for remaining with us.
