## INTRODUCTION

## **The mission of CSUK is** _**‘that every surfer and surfing community might have the opportunity to know and follow Jesus.’**_

This Mission is expressed through the enabling of local CS groups all around the coast and in many major cities of the UK. It is enabled through the Jesus Surf Series our 2 long established surf competitions. It is enabled through a host of events that gather our community together, like the Leaders weekend, National Gathering, Women’s weekend and Men’s weekend. CSUK seek to serve the UK surfing community and in so doing, to share Jesus.

2024 Was a year which saw our founding National Director - Phil Williams - announce his intention to step down from the role in July 2025 and take a timely sabbatical. This created a significant opportunity and work process to plan for succession and enable a healthy transition for CSUK into new leadership. Much of this work was capably held by the Chair of Trustees Dr Rob Crouch. CSUK is indebted to his service towards this 2024/25 transition.

## **Structure of Christian Surfers UK**

CSUK is part of Christian Surfers International, which is reaching out to surfers in over thirty countries around the world. It has been a registered charity since 1999 (charity number 1070830).

## **Staff Team**

During the financial year of 2024, CSUK did not employ any staff. The organisation is run by a National Director, who lives by faith and give his time freely. In addition, we are also fantastically supported by a part time, self-employed Administrator, and some amazing volunteers.

## **Board of Trustees**

A Board of Trustees oversees the work, and these women and men come from a variety of backgrounds and professions joined by their shared love of Jesus and the ocean.

## Broad Based Strategies

**Connecting** – Those activities that enable us to have a platform in the surfing community that help us initiate relationships e.g. personal surfing, media, movie nights, camps and contests.

**Discipling** – Those activities that will help and grow a surfer in their lifelong relationship with Jesus. e.g. Bible Studies, Camps, local missions, prayer

**Serving** – Those activities that enable us to meet the needs of our wider surfing community e.g. chaplaincy, events, logistical support, community development.

**Equipping** – Those activities that empower our people to advance the vision e.g. Training, mentoring, resources, leadership development, spiritual disciplines.

**Partnering** – Those activities that by sharing and joining with others help us to achieve our mission e.g. surf industry, local church, mission agencies, industry, alumni.

## 2024 OVER VIEW

2024 had a full calendar of events planned into it.

**March** saw our annual Leaders gathering at St George’s House, Georgeham, North Devon. Our sincere thanks go to Baz and the team there for welcoming and hosting us so faithfully. We gathered 30 volunteer leaders to share, encourage, equip and send back out into our surf community mission field. We are always blown away with God’s goodness towards the work of Christian Surfers and feel so blessed to have such a great dedicated team across the UK.

**April** saw the 16th Jesus Longboard Classic take place in Polzeath, with the generous support of our friends at Tubestation. Over two days we saw 80 competitors join us in this much loved surf competition that brings a beautiful community of longboard surfers together from across the UK, serving them and speaking Jesus into surfing.

**June** had us carry out our National Gathering at a new location - Menadue Farm, North Cornwall- which was an incredible blessing for all who came. Our opportunity to connect as the wider Christian family around worship, word, surfing and fire pit conversation. This year we hosted 80 attendees from the uk and Holland. Members and friends alike joined in an awesome weekend of fun and fellowship.

06

**August** saw a dedicated team of 12 volunteers serving at the World Surf League Boardmasters Surf Competition, Fistral Beach, Newquay Cornwall. 250 competitors eating through nearly 300 breakfast and lunches over 5 days, the partnership with the surf competition over 20 years has continued to grow and we were thrilled once again to serve and outreach at such a prestigious event.

**September** saw our long standing Jesus Surf Classic Competition at Croyde being postponed due to unsurfable conditions. Where were pleased to have gained 120 competitors and 30 volunteers for the two day event, each where sad not to see it go ahead but look forward to the next one.

**October** saw our 2nd Mens Weekend at OA Surf Club in Widemouth Bay. This three day event had 25 men enjoy fellowship, teaching and surfing together, building community and faith.

**November** saw our 7th annual Women’s weekend taking place at St George’s House, Georgham, North Devon. With a full house of 32 women of mixed surf ability, this three day event brought joy and spiritual nourishment to those that attended. Thanks to our 6 volunteer female leaders we celebrated another year of new members an and friends into Christian Surfers.

Behind all these events is a raft of faithful, generous, beautiful volunteers, partnerships and collaborations. You know who you are and we thank you for helping to make CSUK what it is.

Beyond all the CSUK main events, Phil continued to serve and support the wider UK surf community in a variety of ways.

## **The Future:** _2025 and beyond_

2024 has been a pivotal year for CSUK with the announcement from Phil Williams of his intention to step down from the role of CSUK National Director. The Trustee body is confident in its ability to establish an appropriate transition board and to successfully recruit a new National Director into the role during 2025. We look forward to all that God will reveal in this process. As ever our eyes are on Him who calms the wind and the waves (Matthew 8:27).

## Reserves

Since 31st December 2024, there have been significant changes in staff and structure. The unusually large reserves are to support the new staff and other costs while a sustainable income strategy is developed. A full review of structures, processes and ways of working will be undertaken to ensure we are using CSUK funds effectively. It is anticipated that once this transition period is over the reserves policy will be reviewed again.
