## INTRODUCTION 

The vision of CSUK is ‘that every surfer and surfing community has opportunity to know and follow Jesus.' That vision statement is traditionally conducted through initiatives ranging from individual discipleship, to serving at high profile surfing contests throughout the UK and beyond. 

2023 was a busy year from the summer onwards a whole raft of events condensed into a few short months which meant that the staff and volunteer event team were kept really busy right up until the end of October. The organisation was fortunate to have a strong trustee and a leadership team, and whilst we were anticipating some really tough financial challenges, strangely enough, because of the pandemic we actually ended the year in quite a positive position, as most of our events cost us money to put them on.

## Structure of Christian Surfers UK 

CSUK is part of Christian Surfers International, which is reaching out to surfers in over thirty countries around the world. It has been a registered charity since 1999 (charity number 1070830). 

## Board of Trustees 

A board of trustees oversees the work, and these individuals come from a variety of backgrounds, from ordained ministers to significant individuals within the surfing community. 

## Staff Team 

CSUK does not employ any staff. The organisation is run by a national director, who lives by faith and give his time freely. In addition, we are also fantastically supported by a part time, self-employed administrator, and some amazing volunteers.

## Vision Statement 

That every surfer and every surfing community has opportunity to know and follow Jesus. 

## Core Values 

We share the good news of Jesus with surfers, following them together in community, enabling them to do the same. We are: 

**Gospel-centred** – Bible based, Jesus, discipleship, prayer and incarnational, (Matt 28:18-20) 

**Servant-hearted** – Humility, trust, sacrificial, empowering, (Matt 20:26-27)

## Broad Based Strategies 

**Connecting** – Those activities that enable us to have a platform in the surfing community that help us initiate relationships e.g. personal surfing, media, movie nights, camps and contests. 

**Discipling** – Those activities that will help and grow a surfer in their lifelong relationship with Jesus. e.g. Bible Studies, Camps, local missions, prayer Serving – Those activities that enable us to meet the needs of our wider surfing community e.g. chaplaincy, events, logistical support, community development. 

**Equipping** – Those activities that empower our people to advance the vision e.g. Training, mentoring, resources, leadership development, spiritual disciplines. 

**Partnering** – Those activities that by sharing and joining with others help us to achieve our mission e.g. surf industry, local church, mission agencies, industry, alumni.

## 2023 re ee HIGHLIGHTS 

It was great to get back to full activities working closely with so many different parts of the UK surfing community for which we continue to be hugely appreciative of the opportunities, and of all the volunteers that make serving at these events possible. 

## Jesus Longboard Classic 

As a result of many of the leadership been involved with the Christian surfers Europe Middle East and Africa gathering which was scheduled for early October it was decided for the first time to move the very popular longboard classic to an earlier spring date in April. This event attracted around 80 of the U.K.’s top longboard community and was supported by around 30 of the CSUK members and friends ensuring a really well-run event. Some great waves and a positive weekend, moving the date worked well and enabled us to continue to invest in the longboard community.

## National Gathering: 

The national gathering took place at Polzeath with an internal focus very much based at growing the UK mission, reconnecting and focusing on our core values and key leaders as well as welcoming many new faces. Events throughout the weekend included a beach clean on the Saturday and an open-air communion on the beach on Sunday, before joining with the Tubestation community to close a fantastic weekend in bright sunshine. 

## Jesus Surf Classic 

The Jesus Surf classic was a bit of a challenge in the year with the first scheduled date being postponed due to flat conditions, and then the second weekend it literally was a weekend of two halves. The first day was small clean conditions and sunny and took place at Croyde, whereas on the Sunday conditions grew significantly and therefore the contest had to be transferred to Putsborough for the remainder of the contest; the finals were held in excellent conditions. These circumstances impacted our finances as we incurred a number of additional costs and lost out on some revenues. The event still attracted around 140 competitors with others turned away and a great crew of around 50 CSUK volunteers and friends.

## CS EMEA Gathering 

With national director Phil Williams also the director of CS Europe it was a busy October for Phil and many of the others involved with CSUK leadership as they helped and attended the Europe Middle East Africa gathering in south-west France. A really encouraging time with around 160 surf missionaries from throughout the region, where the vision for 2030 was shared by Roy Harley, the international director, of having CS missions in a hundred affiliated countries, with a thousand core groups and 2% of the online surfing content, quite a challenge. 

So, for CSUK how can we best contribute to that vision more of that in the coming years. 

## Men’s Gathering 

Following on of the success of the women’s gathering 2023 saw the launch of the first men’s gathering in November. It was great to gather like-minded men, to have time to share faith and surf. We will build on the success of this year for future years. We continued to pray for opportunities to serve and to pray for surfers within this UK surfing community during this year and were amazed at the number of opportunities that continue to develop. From feedback received CSUK’s support of British surfing was widely appreciated, and we could not do that without the support of so many of our members, volunteers, trustees and wider leadership

## Summary 

Overall another positive year financially with both income and expenditure similar to 2022 which meant a net contribution to ongoing reserves of around £11.2 K. At the end of the 2023 year the total reserves in the bank amounted to just over £122k of which £18k of this is restricted and mainly connected with Phil Williams European role. With regards to our membership it continued to show slow growth, with around 350 members but numerous other people on the fringes who are actively involved in the ministry. 

## Reserves 

At this stage the amount of reserves is above what we would normally expect. Over the course of 2024/25 the volunteer national director will be stepping down it is anticipated that the new national director will be employed, the reserves will be used to ‘pump prime’ this role and develop a sustainable income strategy. A full review of structures, processes and ways of working will be undertaken to ensure we are using CSUK funds effectively. It is anticipated that once this transition period is over the reserves policy will be reviewed again.

## Main Events 

Christian surfers undertake numerous national and local events, both internally and serving the wider surfing community. 

The aim of these events is to continue to integrate ourselves into the surfing community by supporting the organisers, as well and was running our own competitions and gatherings. Our Jesus Surf Series competitions are regarded as outreach opportunities and therefore there is always a cost to these; combined in 2023 this amounted to a £1540 deficit, but the benefits are far wider than purely financial. 

Externally we get involved in serving the Welsh and Scottish surf federations at their national gathering as well as serving at the Boardmasters in Newquay. Overall, these tend to breakeven or provide a small contribution to be invested in the ongoing mission. 

## The Future 2024 and beyond 

Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond the charity will be going through a period of change as the national director of over 30 years has indicated he will be stepping down in the summer of 2025. A 

transition board will be established to oversee this process. We believe that the organisation is now focusing more on building the ministry, we have a really strong base of trustees as well as a leadership team and the organisation is all set for a period of 

growth.
