CHRISTIAN SURFERS UK
BY PHIL WILLIAMS CSUK & EMEA NATIONAL DIRECTOR
SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2022
JESUS SURF SERIES
National Gathering: it was fantastic to get back to our traditional National gathering at the amazing venue of Tubestation in Polzeath, Cornwall. Over a hundred people coming together from across the UK as well as our friends in Holland. Sharing an amazing weekend, where we gave thanks for David Renyard who was stepping down after over 10 years helping in the ministry and also celebrating Phil Williams 20th anniversary living by faith. Reminding ourselves the importance of community, praise & worship, and a shared vision. We welcomed as speaker Roy Harley the international director of Christian Surfers a real treat for the team in the UK.
This year saw a significant landmark in the history of the Jesus surf series with the 30th anniversary Jesus Surf classic at Croyde Bay North Devon. Not without its challenges due to lack of Surf and then almost too much surf but it meant that we were able to have for the first time ever a junior ‘Jesus’ with many of the U.K.’s top under 12’s and under 14’s competing in their own categories for the first year as opposed to a combined category. Then at a later date a 2nd weekend to run the remaining six categories. The event continues to grow in popularity and gives the opportunity to serve the mainstream surf community.
It was great to finally begin to get back to normal after the last few years of Covid affected our activities, there is no doubt about it that as a charity we had lost some momentum during those Covid years when groups couldn’t meet, and events didn’t run, but it was great to see so many of them back again in 2022. A big thank you for the continued support of our members, friends and church partners for sticking with us through what had been a challenging couple of years, which means that we are in a really positive place coming out of the Covid lockdown era.
Meanwhile in Polzeath the 14th Jesus longboard classic was also a huge success, great surf throughout the weekend and nearly 90 of the U.K.’s top longboarders enjoying hospitality from Tubestation and the opportunity to attend the surfer’s blessing. It was great to have a new team heading up this event due to the change of date meaning others could not attend, therefore spreading the expertise.

The vision of CSUK is ’to give every surfer and every surfing community the
Christian surfers is involved in numerous partnerships, some of those key ones are long-term Church partnerships, of which the support of Holy Trinity Church in Nailsea is one of those. A glorious sunny day for the event saw hundreds of people turn out and a fantastic series of events on the skate park. It was also a great opportunity to look back over the 20 years and to share something of the gospel message.

That vision statement is traditionally carried out through initiatives ranging from individual discipleship, serving at high profile surfing contests throughout the UK, and numerous local surf related initiatives. We realise that one of the important aspects of the mission, are not just our individual members but also the local groups, so we have been working hard during the year to begin to identify and support the group leaders, and encourage those core groups to start meeting again, and also to support some of the national initiatives.
