## **2021 AnnuAl RepoRt SummARy** Unfortunately 2021 continued with lockdowns as in the previous year and continued to take the ministry of Christian Surfers UK through circumstances which we never anticipated. The good news was that we continued to find ways of connecting remotely and as the year moved on it was so good to be able to slowly build back and meet again face to face in our various regional communities. A big thank you to our members, friends, and church partners for your continued support and for sticking with us through what has been the unusual and challenging 12 months covered by this annual report. ## **IntRoductIon** The vision of CSUK is ’to give every surfer and every surfing community the opportunity to know and follow Christ.’ That vision statement is traditionally carried out through initiatives ranging from individual discipleship, to serving at high profile surfing contests throughout the UK and beyond. We have been focused on that mission for just over 30 years, and I am pleased to say that it is as relevant today as it was at the start. The enthusiasm, passion and willingness to serve the surfing community, remains at the heart of the charity. Last year really was a tale of two halves, with the various lockdowns restricting what we did up until July, and then from the summer onwards a whole raft of events were condensed into a few short months, which meant that the staff and volunteer events team were kept really busy right up until the end of October The organisation was fortunate to have a strong trustee and leadership team, and whilst we were anticipating some really tough financial challenges, strangely enough, because of the pandemic we actually ended the year in quite a positive position, as most of our events cost us money to put them on. ## **Some hIghlIghtS fRom 2021** ## Regional gatheRings Unfortunately, we were unable to hold our single site national gathering on its traditional June weekend due to Covid restrictions. However, one of the highlights of the year was to encourage lots of small CSUK gatherings around the country. We ended up having around 20 such gatherings from as far south as Cornwall, into Scotland, East Anglia, West Wales and indeed over in Northern Ireland. Some were on a very small scale with three or four, with others up to 20 to 25 people; a fantastic and encouraging time which reminded us of the importance of community ## the long Paddle A great partnership which evolved during the year was with the Above Water charity whose founder, Brendon Prince, was trying to be the first person to stand up paddle board around the whole of the UK coast. Jesus suRf seRies - back on the beaches After 2020’s online version of the Jesus Surf Series, it was great to get back to being able to organise and host both the Jesus Surf Classic and the Jesus Longboard Classic in person during the autumn, at Croyde Bay and Polzeath respectively. However, conditions for the 29th Jesus Surf Classic were very challenging due to wildly varying surf forecasts, which meant in the end we could only run the older categories on the Saturday, with no junior categories. A tough call and a real shame, but the right decision in the end. One week later we ran the Jesus longboard Classic in great conditions with a record number of entrants and quality surf. The gospel was shared through the surfers blessing, and it reminded us of the importance of events such as this. The focus of the event was water safety, and Phil, CSUK National Director, and Brendon connected to use the CS network to help support this venture which involved paddling over 4000 km in 141 days, starting and ending in Torquay. CS members around the country were able to support Brendon in all sorts of practical ways, and in addition to CS supporting the event, Above Water chose CSUK as one of their charities to benefit from funds raised on this epic voyage. A fantastic example of partnership We continued to pray for opportunities to serve and to pray for surfers within this UK surfing community during this year, and despite the obvious challenges were amazed at the number of opportunities that continue to develop. From feedback received, CSUK’s support of British surfing is widely appreciated, and we could not do that without the support of so many of our members, volunteers, trustees, and wider leadership team if there are any further questions about anything in this brief report, please don’t hesitate to contact csuk’s national director, Phil Williams (phil@christiansurfers.co.uk) ## **StRuctuRe of chRIStIAn SuRfeRS uK** CSUK is part of Christian Surfers International, which is reaching out to surfers in over 30 countries around the world. It has been a registered charity since 1999 (charity number 1070830). ## **BoARd of tRuSteeS** A board of trustees oversees the work and these individuals come from a variety of backgrounds, from ordained ministers to significant individuals within the surfing community. ## **StAff teAm** CSUK does not employ any staff. The organisation is run by a national director, a media director, these two key people live by faith and give their time freely. We are also fantastically supported by a part time, self-employed administrator. ## **VISIon StAtement** That every surfer and every surfing community has opportunity to know and follow Jesus. ## **coRe VAlueS** We share the good news of Jesus with surfers, following them together in community, enabling them to do the same. We are: Gospel-centred – Bible based, Jesus, discipleship, prayer and incarnational, (Matt 28:18-20) Servant-hearted – Humility, trust, sacrificial, empowering, (Matt 20:26-27) People of Integrity – accountability, character, authentic, (Titus 2:11-12, James 4:17) (Gal 3:28) Inclusive – Celebrate diversity, open source, partnering, relational, community Adventurous – Fun loving, surfing, fun, have a go, (John 10:10) ## **BRoAd BASed StRAtegIeS** Connecting – Those activities that enable us to have a platform in the surfing community that help us initiate relationships e.g personal surfing, media, movie nights, camps and contests Discipling – Those activities that will help and grow a surfer in their lifelong relationship with Jesus. e.g Bible Studies, Camps, local missions, prayer Serving – Those activities that enable us to meet the needs of our wider surfing community e.g chaplaincy, events, logistical support, community development.
