## **NEWHOPE MINISTRIES TRUST Annual Report for the year to 31 March 2023**

New Hope Ministries Trust (Leeds) is registered with the Charities Commission (No 1070796) and

constituted by Deed of Trust. The charity, whose objects are below, is administered by the Trustees, namely; Mr John Sloan (chair)

Dr Myra Sloan

Dr Clive Pleasance

Mr Jon Francis

Mr James Sloan

In addition, Mrs Pamela Francis acts as a professional accountant for the charity, and sits with the Trustees.

The objects of the charity are

1. To advance the Christian faith in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees may from time to time think fit.

2. To relieve persons who are in conditions of need or hardship or who are aged or sick and to relieve the distress caused thereby in such other parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees may from time to time think fit

3. To promote and fulfil such other charitable purposes beneficial to the community in parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees may from time to time think fit.

The website, www.newhope.co.uk is regularly updated to give information about the overseas work and current projects. The charity receives and passes on donations for the support of work in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a Christian worker in Canada, and an aid worker serving in Asia. We no longer support any other work or individual. The aid to the latter two is being phased out and will cease during 2023.

## Bankers

HSBC, Pensby Road, Heswall. The charity has two accounts, one predominantly for overseas medical work (New Hope Overseas) and the other specifically for the pastor in Canada (this was the original account and called New Hope Ministries Trust). This latter account will be closed during 2023.

## Independent Examiner

Mr Duncan Meredith. He has acted as our Independent Examiner for some years and has not raised any concerns over the operation of the charity, nor the integrity of our finances.

## Voluntary help

The Trustees and other helpers work without remuneration.

## Risk management

The Trustees keep the Trust’s management under review, particularly with regard to fraud overseas, and a number of policies exist to achieve this.

## Serious incidents

There have been no incidents relating to the charity to report.

## Overview

The work overseas remains in Uganda (a school), but due to end Dec 2022, in the DRC (a feeding programme, a school and a clinic), plus overseeing the support for 1 overseas worker. We do not send money to them overseas, but to UK accounts that they access on an as-and-when basis. Funds for Uganda and DRC are difficult to send, but we are now allowed to send through HSBC, albeit at a £17 fee. We have also used Wise and Paysend, and also via Love Congo, a charity run by Mr James Sloan. These payments are all strictly recorded.

Regarding the new clinic in DRC, New Hope charity continues to work with Imagine If charity in Liverpool, as a partnership to achieve the best project management and oversight. Since we formally opened the clinic in November 2018, we have now added a pre-delivery building and a well providing clean water. A visit took place in November 2022 (Dr Myra Sloan) to oversee the projects, and another in April 2023 to train 12 key personnel in Ultrasound. We have a more sophisticated machine which has been given to the clinic.

We are terminating support for Issam Khoury via New Hope during 2023, as we were advised that it may no longer be allowed as he is neither a charity or a UK citizen. He is progressively using Stewardship Services.

## Financial summary

Monies are held and administered through 2 HSBC bank accounts and reported in one overall charity statement in the annex to this report. The income for all our work is mostly from regular monthly gifts and generous individual donations, often following an update on the work, plus proceeds from occasional charitable fundraising events. Expenditure covers the cost of overseas trips, regular support of the clinics, and the meeting of specific needs.

_Signed by Dr John Sloan, Chair of Trustees,22nd November 2023_
