Basset Hound Rescue & Welfare Annual Report
For the year 1[st] July 2021 to 30[th] June 2022
In June we celebrated our 25[th] Anniversary, a significant milestone being the only breed-specific Basset Hound rescue and welfare group recognised by the Kennel Club. Also, we are a registered charity. Time marches on, our organisation is not immune from change and continually strives to be ahead of the game. This year we have updated our name and refreshed our website, making us more cyber-visible and focussed on the audience who will benefit from the help we offer. Similarly, our Facebook page, exceeding our expectations is endlessly popular, attracting increasing numbers of new users.
The changing times have seen the ‘great dog-buying public’ turn away from traditional breeds in favour of ‘designer’ crossbreeds, of which many allegedly have a guaranteed family/child-friendly temperament and don’t shed hair; also ‘on trend’ rare European breeds who appear unique and fashionably stand out from the crowd. Consequently, the falling demand for our historically familiar breeds, means fewer are being bred and ultimately in decline.
The number of Basset Hounds handled by the charity continues to dwindle, our role becoming increasingly that of caring for older dogs and those needing costly veterinary treatment – we never turn away any Hound needing help. However, the rise in vets’ fees, possibly fuelled by many practices upgrading themselves to ‘Veterinary Hospitals’, may lead to more pets, albeit reluctantly, being surrendered to rescue organisations.
Whereas the rapidly changing and volatile world situation has impacted negatively on every aspect of our lives, by judicious management of our finances by past and present trustees, Basset Hound Rescue & Welfare benefits from a firm foundation to continue it’s caring role in the community.
We are sincerely grateful to everyone who supports us with donations, buys our memorabilia and all our loyal ‘ friends of Basset Hound Rescue & Welfare’. Additionally, heartfelt thanks to our very capable and knowledgeable Area Representatives and Contacts, who willingly give of their time and expertise. Finally, our many foster carers for giving loving homes to older and vulnerable animals.
