THE FRIENDS OF PENNTHORPE SCHOOL

NOTES TO THE ACCOUNTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2023

1 ACCOUNTING POLICIES

1.1 Basis of preparation

The charity meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy. The financial statements are prepared in Sterling and rounded to the nearest £1.

There are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern,

Estimates and judgements are continually evaluated and are based on historical experience and other factors, including expectations of future events that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances.

In the opinion of the trustees, no assumptions concerning the future or estimation certainty affecting assets and liabilities at the balance sheet date are likely to result in material adjustment to their carrying amounts in the next financial year.

1.2 Cash Flow Statement

In accordance with Section 7 of FRS 102 the charity is claiming exemption from the requirement to prepare a cash flow statement on account of its size.

1.3 Income

Donations, legacies, grants and other voluntary income are accounted for as and when entitlement arises, the amount can be reliably measured and the economic benefit is considered probable. All other income is accounted for when receivable.

Where a donor or an appeal has imposed restrictions the income is credited to a restricted fund.

1.4 Expenditure

Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis with irrecoverable VAT included with the item to which it relates.

Charitable expenditure comprises those costs incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services for its beneficiaries. It includes both costs that can be allocated directly to such activities and those costs of an indirect nature to support them.

Governance costs (included within Support costs) comprise all costs associated with constitutional and statutory requirements with which the charity must comply.

1.5 Debtors

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due.

1.6 Cash at bank and in hand

Cash at bank and in hand includes cash and short term highly liquid investments. The trustees seek to use short and medium term deposits where possible to maximise the return on monies held at the bank and to manage cash flow.

1.7 Creditors and provisions

Creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in a transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably.

1.8 Financial instruments

The charity only has financial assets and liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments which are recognised at transaction value and subsequently at their settlement value.

Restricted funds are those funds that can only be used for particular restricted purposes in accordance with the wishes of the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

2 TAXATION

The Friends of Pennthorpe is a registered charity (Number 1069070). All activities are undertaken to fulfil the primary objectives of the charity and are therefore exempt under Part 10 of the Income Tax Act 2007 and Section 256 of the Chargeable Gains Act 1992.
