Objectives and Activities

Purpose of the Charity

The purpose of the charity is to educate the public in dramatic and operatic arts to further the development of public appreciation and taste in the said arts

Main activities of the Charity

Create and perform musical theatre shows to the public.

Statement

The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Achievement and Performance

Summary

Bristol Amateur Operatic Society performed two successful main shows in April 2024 and June 2024, and smaller revue shows in October 2024 and November 2024 by the senior and youth section respectively. We are currently planning a main senior show in April 2026 and a main youth show in June 2026, followed by revue shows in autumn 2026.

We expect the continuation of performing shows will again allow us to continue the charity’s purpose in educating the public in dramatic and operatic arts to further the development of public appreciation and taste in the said arts.

Financial Review

The charity made an overall surplus of £12,229.

Theatre production receipts were £67,532 and payments £61,406 resulting in a surplus of £6,126 - although the receipts and payments shown are both net of box office charges for hire fees, commission and other expenses of about £10,500.

Subscriptions and fundraising receipts of £25,206 and payments of £19,103 resulted in a surplus of £6,103. The total surplus of £12,229 added to funds brought forward of £9,784 increased cash reserves to £22,013.

Comments

Bristol Amateur Operatic Society made a gain overall in this financial year. The charity holds enough funds to be able to continue and continues to fundraise and receive donations. A full slate of shows has been undertaken during 2025.

Structure, Governance and Management

Organisation of the Charity

A committee is elected at an Annual General Meeting of the Members, that is convened annually as soon as possible after the end of the financial year to which members shall be summoned by notice

giving not less than fourteen days. The committee has undergone an evolution this year to further separate Adult and Youth activities, and currently comprises a Chairperson and Vice-Chair for each section, a Secretary and Treasurer covering both sections and other Members.

All arrangements for the productions and other events and the control of the finances are in the hands of the committee.

Reserves policy and risk management

The trustees have examined the major risks to which the charity is exposed, and systems have been established to mitigate those risks. These procedures will be periodically reviewed to ensure that they still meet the needs of the charity.

Trustees’ responsibilities in relation to the financial statements

Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the charity’s financial activities during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

Closing Statement

They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
