Objectives OF The Organization:

Granby Somali Women’s Group objective is to increase mainstream services for women from Somali and BME communities located in the Liverpool Ward. The center is a lifeline for a large number of Somali women and families and families from other BME Communities who are unable to access services due to barriers in language.

Granby Somali Women’s Group aims to achieve the following outcomes for service users:

Activities offered at the Centre:

Volunteering:

GSWG

Achievements:

Liverpool City Council (CRG ) - Granby Somali Women's Group with its funding from Liverpool City Council (CRU) has been able to offer a twice weekly drop in service for Muslim women and those affected by health issues. The aim of the project is to enable Muslim women to feel less isolated and improve their quality of life by interacting with others from within the community and receiving assistance with their health issues. The sessions are targeted at those who are isolated and secluded from mainstream provision and outcomes center on building new friendships, gain knowledge and insight into the range of activities available within the community and center and being the first port of contact to address health issues. The women involved are isolated, face a language barrier, and are in desperate need of increasing their confidence and self-esteem.

Workers Educational Association (ESF) – The ‘Digital Me’ project, was a pre-employment project, funded by the WEA and equipped job seekers with digital skills to enable them to find employment. This helped to improve current skill sets/work experience, which participants may have never seen as a skill that they can use to find employment. This project reached women in isolation and those who were economically inactive due to barriers in language, low self-esteem, and low self-confidence.

National Lottery Community Fund - GSWG was able to secure funding from the National Lottery Community Fund for ‘our voices’ project. Our Voices aims to build upon existing awareness raising campaigns around the issues of FGM and sexual misconduct by providing direct support to those affected, giving them a voice against harmful practices. We have developed extensive experience of delivering and co-delivering services, advice and support to individuals from our communities who are directly affected by these practices helping individuals to come to terms with and overcome mental and physical health related issues within supportive environments that we provide. By incorporating FGM and sexual harassment/misconduct discussions into other messages which might include a wider range of health issues (e.g. sexual health, mental health) and into the wider social, recreational and support services that GSWG also provides, we will ensure that individuals get the support that they need in an appropriate and non-pressured way and increase their social

GSWG

connections through ongoing engagement. This project is now in its second year and during the pandemic, GSWG was able to adapt its services to continue to deliver the “our voices” project to the community using a range of platforms.

John Moores Foundation: Funding from John Moores Foundation to provide a grant towards the Project Manager’s role. The role of the project manager enables GSWG to continue running a variety of projects, which have been designed, developed and promoted by the women and service users involved with GSWG. This enables GSWG to continue being a frontline organization advocating for women and families from the BAME Communities in the Princes Park ward who face a language barrier and are unable to access mainstream support. Especially during the pandemic, this funding enabled GSWG project manager to continue to lead the organization during this precarious time and deliver the services required by its community.

COVID 19 Funders: During the pandemic, GSWG was able to secure funding from several emergency avenues, which enabled the Charity to cater to the needs of its community. Funding was made available from PCC Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence Fund, along with Steve Morgan Emergency COVID 19 Fund, Rosa’s COVID 19 Fund, COVID 19 Community Support Fund via the Community Foundation for Merseyside, National Lottery Community Fund COVID 19 Emergency Fund, Rosa Imkaan C19 Fund, Clothworkers Foundation and Smallwood Trust COVID 19 Frontline Women’s Fund. Without any of this funding, GSWG would not have been able to provide a range of services, which met the needs of not only its services users but the wider community during the pandemic and enable this frontline organisation to continue to provide a service, when many statutory services were unable. GSWG would like to take the opportunity to thank all its funds but especially those who were able to provide sustainability to the charity during these unprecedented times.

And GSWG would also like to say thank you to all our other small pot funders, as every penny counts and makes a difference to those, we all serve.

Challenges for 2022: As GSWG moves into 2022, the challenge of COVID 19 remains at the fore front. Loss of income, continues to be an issue, especially as many of the emergency funding that was made available to grassroots organisations, is no longer present. Many of

GSWG

GSWG service users continue to face unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic, which has led to economic and social fallout. Job losses, the shrinking of the economy and loss of livelihood are all issues affecting those that GSWG serves and the wider community. Additionally, the challenges faced by GSWG as an organization to remain sustainable and continue will be an extremely important challenge in the coming years ahead.

Despite these new challenges, GSWG continues to still move forward with its strategic plan and making sure that the ethos of the organization continues to flourish, enabling and strengthening its beneficiaries’ circumstances and making sure, that they are at the heart of everything that we do and try to achieve in the years ahead.

Reserves: The Charity aims to maintain unrestricted funds, which are the free reserves of the charity, at a level adequate to meet its needs.

Risk Management: The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, in particular those related to the operations and finances of the charity, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks. This report has been prepared in accordance with the special provisions of Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies.

Granby Somali Women’s Group and its service users appreciate all the support and assistance they have received from Funders and would like to say a big thank you to them for the support and funds, which enable us to provide worthwhile projects to our service users and the wider community as a whole.
