Annual Report
The Colin Meikoleit Trust is a new trust borne out of a trust ( The 26[th] Middlesbrough, Settlement Scout Group Trust) set up in May1961 principally in support of the aforementioned group.
Individual scout groups have wide ranging autonomy and as such the Trust had no day to day involvement in the running of the 26[th] . Regrettably over the last several years the Group was mismanaged and incurred considerable debts and despite assistance from local scout leaders was forced into closure. In order to clear the considerable debts and avoid potential legal action the Trust was obliged to step in with financial support and effect a satisfactory winding up of the Group.
The original Trust was only concerned with providing support to the 26[th] and the Trustees took the view that a change of direction might be appropriate and proposed to widen the scope of the Trust beyond scouting to enable it to provide help and assistance to other young people and organisations in the Tees Valley area.
As the original Trust was concerned solely with Scouting and referenced the Policy, Organisation and the Rules of the Scout movement, the change in emphasis required new trust documents. These were drawn up and submitted to the Charities Commission recently.
Resulting from the need by the Trust to investigate and resolve the financial issues of the last few years, including negotiations with various parties (Scouts, debtors, Charities Commission, etc) there has been very little positive activity by the Trust.
Going forward the Trustees are committed to supporting the young people of the Tees Valley and are already involved with the D of E scheme for the use assets owned by the Trust.
In the meantime the Trustees are very aware of the fact that they themselves are getting older and are actively seeking younger individuals, of a like mind, with a view to becoming Trustees.
