Welcome from Paul Cann OBE and Maddy Mllls
In March 2020 at the be8inning of the first national lockdown. we tould not have imagined what was just
around the corner. The co¥id-19 pandemic has had a devasrating irnpart ort the commuftities we work with
and requifed us as an organisation to entire￿ re-shape our programmes to respond to thls global crisis. In.
amongst the unprecedented challenges, we have worked with our communities, many of whom have been
disPfOPOrtionately affected by the pandemic. to brin8 Vital connection5. creativity and joy. Our work has never
been more important.
We'd like to pay tribute to the extraordinary stsff team. trustees. volunteer5 and artists who almost ovemight
transformed our programmes to ensure that our communities continued to connect with culture and
community during this isolavng period. As an organisation. our work has always been based on 5usiained
relationships with our corytmvnities. but navigatin8 the pandemK deepened ihese further. Social prescribing
became an important feature of ovr year. a5 we welcorned new people to our pro8rammes referred by local
social prescribers and community partner5.
We are incredibly gratefvl to our core funders. Arts Council England and London Borough of Lewisham for their
ongoing support, and to our oiher funders including City Bridge Trust. who provided flexibilty with their 8rant5
durin8 this time, enabling them to be re-directed to where the need was greatest.
Prior to the pèndenTric. we had already been testing ways of bringing creatlvity and connertion to people's
home. for those who could no lon8er attend our in person artivity. From April 2020. this became our entire
focus. This document de5cribe5 the outcomes from the yea¥. and capiures some of the feedback and storie5
which have emerged from our communities. As a Sector. arts and culture became a lifeline for so many people
during the pandemic. and we were pleased to be collaborating both on a local and national level with peers
atr95S the arts. cornrnunity and health sectors to reach communities during this time.
In amongst the enormous changes to our programmes. we underwent a significant change of leadership, as
Founder and Artistic Director. Dawd Slater. stepped down in October 2020 and Maddy Mills took over as
Director. David remains involved an Associate for ihe or8antsatioTr.
Whilst the year was incredibty challenging on many fronts. wt are extraordinarity proud of how the
.organisation adapted. demonstrating nimblenes5. togetherness and p051tive energy during thi5 tlme.

had a cole team of one full-tirne and five part-tirne Staff with responsibility for managing indNidual

of associate art15ts and freelancers.
How our attlvliies dell¥er public benefrt
Our main activities and who we try ro help are described in thi5 document. All our charitable activities focus on
the provision of art5 and creative projects that support the cultural inclusion of people who have learning
disabilities or older margin31ised people and are undertaken to further our Charitable purposes for the public
benefit. The charitvs Trustees have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidatKe on public
benefit published by the CoMmi￿10n in exercising their power5 or dutie5.
Who ustd and benefited from our SeThI￿$?
We work wth older people. adu￿5 znd young people primarily from ihe London Borough5 of Lewisham and
Southwark in south-east London. In achievinB our objective of developing inclusive opportunities for learning
disabled people the work en8ages with diverse groups of people who have different backgrounds and abilities.
In addition to our locally based work we undertake broader regionally based work with communities across
London ènd beyond in line wilh our objective of dissemiThating workin8 practy.ces and procedures to wider
audlences both nationalty and internationallv.
Review of Activities
During the 2020-21 financial year Entelechy Arts continued io consolidate arKI develop a portfolio ol
programmes and projetts delivering innovative prattice in line with our charitable objettives. Durin8 this
period the covid-19 pandemic took ￿are. which had a profound impatt on the éelwery of our proEiammes
and the communities who we work with. A5 an organisation we rose to the challenges th3t we faced. and
elivered a busy remote creative programme for existing and Thew rnembers who were referred to us during
that period. An overview of the companWs programmes of work 15 Outlined in the Programme of Work section

Programme of zctivitle5: Our Year ToKether. Apart
Prior to March 2020. we were already testing ways of reaching communtties who were housebound, struggle
to attend reBularly in-person or betome unable to continue to attend as they become more frail. This work
was accelerated durin8 the pandemic, and became our sole output as an or8ani5ation. We delivered the.
following programmes..
Creative austers
Clusters are how we are staying tOAnetted io our members durin& and beyond. the
pandemic. Meet Me... 15 an award-winning programme of creative and sotial artivities. where older people in
Lewisham can make friends. enjoy the(f favourite artivitie5 and learn new craft5. Durin8 the first covid-19
lockdown. we developed Our '5taying Connetted. programme with new ways to stay in touch and stay creative
whilst working remote5y. Initially. there were lots of one ro one calls. but we knew that everyone wa5 rn1s5ing
their friends and the joy of being in community. together.. $0 we transitioned to deliver the main programme
via gfoup phone c311s to landline or mobile5 phones in small group talls 'CluMers'. Every Cluster is led by an
experienced artist facilitator and is supported by up to 3 other people including staff and trained volunteers.
Each group has a dffferent creative focus including Choir. Poetry. Movies or Craft. In a typical Cluster, the artist
and volunteers join the call first, and then phone each group member. welcoming them individy311y. GrgUPS
are typically 8-10 people. All calls are f¥ee to participate and set up so no one incurs extr3 phone bills.
Everyone has the chance to talk and share lor singll. as well as leaving space for natural conversation.
weekly 'Bi8 Little Meeiin8s' enabled ongoing co-creatlon by bringing everyone together in Small group5 to
evaluate. plan and cooeate acro￿ our communities.
Ambient Jam
During the covid-19 lockdown. we also re-shaped the Ambient Jam improvisatiorts wilh
artist-members who have multiple and profound disabililies. We developed a programme of Ambient Jam
Zoom improvisations, with artist-members supported by farn1￿ or 5UPPOrt worker5 jll their homes. and
f¥eelance ariists working with movement film and music. Fieelance artist5 created per50nalized 'Sonic Lette
videos from their homes. In turn. members led the start of the improvisation. for example one memb2r-art15t.
Sun8 back io everyone the song from one the Sonic Letter5 she had received. In this way. our persoThalised
micro-film leitefs weave back into the group work and inform a larger event.
Gnomes at Home - 8etween July - Septernber 2020 we distributed 250 8ift5 to 1501ated older people living
across south east London. taking referrals frorn social prescr¢ber5 and community contacts for people who
were older people who most lonely during lockdown. Gnome5 at Home was an iTh-the-palm-of-your-hand. tiny
garden initiative deggned for windowsills and ledges. Intended as a creative 'conversation starter., this was an
opportunity fof some of the people who have been most margiAalised through tovid-19 ltstkdown to
re-connect to one another and the natural world. It provide5 a nuanced Sense of community, helping us
further examine the power of small 8e5tures and how we frame the lan8uage and landscapes of care. Gnornes
at Horrie arrived In a box. Each one was hand4elivered and contained an unpainted, hand-cast gnome; brush
pens,. a crowd-wurced s￿CCu1ent plant.. Stamped postcard and writinR prompt., and. a letter from the Meet Me
on the Radio. There were exchanges wa postcards. phone talls with eath individuals and further connection
through Meet Me on the Radio.

Rhythms L)f the Day- a new creative sound project delivered to a memberfs home. designed and created by
Malcolm Buchan3n-Dick. Allison Walker and in collaboraiion with members of Ambient Jarn. Rhythrrs of the
Day was desi8ned specifically with and for people who are INing with complex disabilities, visual irnpairments
and dementia including members of Ambient Jam. Each box was hand delivered, coniainin8 a portable
speaker, USB stick with soundtracks, paper fans and set of wonderful. curious instructionsl The project èirned
to tran5forrn our everyday environment into a playfvl. joyful and unexpected experience.
Meet Me on the Radio . A weekly radio show co-produced with the ￿bany, featuring 50nic journey5 through
Lewisham. news and sounds from the Albany ￿rl￿en. creative attmties. provotaiions, and conversations with
member5 and artists. It is broadcast every Tuesday at 11.30am. 12 midday on South London community radio
ststion Resonance FM and is produced in partneiship with Soundcamp. an artist collettive exploring audio
experiences. This regular show has been hosted and created with Meet Me mernbers over the phone with
regular feature5 from Clusters or other programmes. whith has given a vital platfr)rm for the voices of older
people during the pandemic, as well as keeping membets tonnetted when they can't meet reguladv.
Sonic LetteTS - These Ambient Jam thdeo letters We￿ created in the lorm of short films using sound. mu51C.
movement of IiBht. dante. clowning. spoken word and painting. each film was inspired by Ouf members and
their own untque ways of communicating and conllecting. For members with w5ual impairment, we be8un to
explore ways to audio describe the visuals of a letter. Artists have had to learn new digital skills and push their
boundaries in using new media to comrnunicate and connect. Some letters explored the theme of light and
how it rnoves. Creative digital letters have improved rhe cornrnunication pathways between us and farnilies
and circles of ca￿.
- Winter Doorstep Tea 03nce and Gift Parcels - In the days belofe Chris￿a5 2020. Entelechy Arts volunteers,
artist5 and team visited every rnember with a gift bol a loving srnile and often a 50ng. Inspired by our 21si
Century Tea Dances. familiar faces visited people acros5 Lewisharn wilh 3 day5 of pop up performantes takine
place frorn Ida Barr (Christopher Greenl. the Meet Me Choir IRathel 8ennttt and TJM Gardnerl and Arnbieni
Jam ILizLie Ogle and volunteer George Foglel. Entelechy Arts and Meet Me volunteer5 a150 helped to deliver
festive gift parcels to everyone. Including care home5 residents. containing a poetry book. CD ol Meet Me on
the Radio. creative prompts and homemade jam from the Albany Garden. 63 festive parcels were delivered
with an additional 140 poetry boowets sent to people who had previously received a Gnome5 at Home box.
For sorne volunteers. who've started supported the prograrnrne durirt8 the lockdown. it was their first
opportunity to meet member5 in per50n. One new volunteer Said.. Ihe highlight5 for me were the chat5 we
had with Ithe member51. We talked about random things and it felt that they were willing to talk. so it was nice
to pay attention, listen and enBa8e... They receNed us with such a big smile- Chris Gfeen told us about what
happened "Ida is the People's Pensioner and loves norhing more than a chai and an imprompiu song. She
loved seeing her old companion5 very much but also passing a seasonal time of days wtth the posiman, the
Amazon delivery drwer. the fella taking his poodle for a walk, and having a joke or two with the Dial-A-R"Kle
driver. It wa5 so lovely to see people light up when this hu8e dose of theatrical joie de vivre appeared before
them unexpeaedly on their doorstep. There were many affirmations of what a good thing this was, and how
nice it was to acfually be f3ce to face. It was tntly memorable and a delightful way to entertain each other,
connect and remember collertive jov."
Poetry by postcard - In 2020, poets in Coventry and London had a series of exchange5 with isolated older
people by post and by phone. They talked about their hopes. recent and past expÈriences and then forged two
beautilul new poems. Remi Graves spoke with i501ated people li¥in8 in Lewisham who are sup5XJrted by
domiciliary care through Eleanor Healthcare. Joelle Taylor receNed postcards on 'Hopeful Visions of a New
Normal. from residents and staff from two Coventry care hornes. From these exchanges. each poet for8ed
their own resp¢nse about hope. memory and beauty.

. Albany Connects- Run in partnership with The Albany, Albany Connects was a door to door delivery servlce
enabling creative exchan8es between people who may be experiencing isolation during lockdown. Parcels
were delivered by stsff via an electric cargo bike and included anythin8 from plants and cuttings from the
Albany garden which can be grown and re-gified, doorstep performances. poetry, rne55age5. drawings. or even
a painting creared in response to a prompt from an artist- anything that makes someone smilel
Walking Through Walls Residents and well-being c(x)rdinators of Tower 8ridge Care Home corresponded
and collaborated with 3rt15ts thrgugh letter5. poems. video and sonic letters. Trocadero Tales. broLJght the
pèsi alive through music, memories and archive telebrating Elephant and Ca5lle'5 famous Yrocadero cinema,
dance and concert hall. Trocadero Tales was 3150 about uncovering the places where people 8ather and, for
residents in lockdown ift iheir Ca￿ home. had additional significance abovt city planning and place-rnaking.
- One-to-one dementia friendly calls- weekly phone ¢alls have continued with people who most need i(. From
the beginning of the first lockdown to August 2020. we made individuals wellbeing calls to every member. until
mosr people were parr of a remote Broup such as Clusters or Ambient Jam Zoom. For those who are most
vulnerable or when a group cluster tall mkght be a bit confvsin& artists have continued weekly one-to-one or
small group phone ca115 or video calls. Reaching beyond belriendinL these are creative spaces often u5in¥
music to connect and to explore somethin8 in the world beyond ourselves.
Birthday tard5 and songs - we endeavoured to remember everyone's birthday and send a card - or in a few
instances we managed to make a touple of doorstep oi 8arden performarKes to rnark some of the 'bi
birthday5, when restrictions have allowed if.
Research proje¢t with Queen Mary University - In March 2020 we announced that we'd been awarded
funding for new academic research. in partnership with Queen Mary University of london. "Distanced Arts..
Investigaiing the design. delivery. and imparts of Entelechy Arts. Stayin8 Connetted Programme" Is a Covid-19
Rapid Response project. funded by the Arts and Humanit+es Research Council.
Whilst we are committed to returnine to in-person activities as soon as we can. we also know there will alwa
be a need for remote programrnes. As such. we will be taking forward some elements
we would like by
March 2022 to have evaluated the long terrn potential for a remote programme and have buili this into our
fundr3￿51ng plans.

Covid-19 ha5 had a disproportionate impact on the vulnerable communities we work with.
We regularly ask for feedback from (yjr elder communities, with 'Big Little Meetings. by telephone every 6
week5. $0% of these membets have left their house only a few times since March 2020.. mosr are digitally
excluded at a time when opportunities to connect re￿ on technoloBV.

People's sense of agency and choice has been removed. ￿d￿cIng confidence. They miss ir*-person activitie5
but some are nervous about resuming ta￿tt>face activities and taking public transport. This Is exacerbated by
the fact that many people have lost mobilily and fitness, and become more frail durin8 this period. Some are
anxious and dealing with be￿aVernent and loss. Many care homes have had an lneretj￿bIY traumatic year
iesidents have experienced illness and loss. are disconnected from relatives and friend5. have m4ssed creative
activitie5, and seen first hand the devastating impa¢t ol the pandemit on.their institutional 5ettin& and home.

For our Ambient Jarn communities lincluding people living with PMLDI, communication via loom has been a
challenge particularly foi those who have wsual impairments. We have worked hard to make the sessions
sensory, but rhis is understandably limited. and no replacemerti for our usual in-person 5en50ry programme.
During this year, in addition to its corè creatNes programmes the oreanisation has conlinued to contribute to
w¢der policy and partnership through 'thought leadership.. Thi5 includes through the newly established
Thriving Communities. network in Lewisham. which Entelechy Arts took a leading role irt bringing together
or8ani5alion5 acr0$5 Lewisham are exploring and sharing opportunfties and funding opportunities for Social
Prescribing. In partnership with the ￿bany¥ we are often share resources with the Albany and others to
5UPPOrt organisations to be mre accessible. especially more dernentia friendly. Most recently this has
involved being consulred by the GLA on the Mayor of London's dementia friendly venue5 initiative. Entelethy
Arts staff and rnembers are often invited to Sha￿ at local, national and international events and conferences,
including contributing to Boundless CreatNity roundtables wtth DCMS and AHRC, presenting 35 part of the Arts
4 Dementia conference plenary and as part of a Britlsh Council Japan exchange. We are Pro-active in
onnecting with peers in Lewisham Isuch ès VSL/new Lewisham Befriendin8 Network). attending and
contributing to conversation5 around how to make culture more accessible for comrnunitie5 and integrated
with other sectors within the borough. We are currently undertaking 18 months of AHRC-f¥nded research with
Queen Mary University io explore the creaiion, delivery znd impact of our remote creative programmes durinB
the pandemic. Findings from this will be disseminated at public event5 in 21122 and 22123.
2OZI-20Z2 Future Developments
The 21122 period is one of planned transltion- programmatic chanRes as a result of the pandemic and the
retent change in leadership mean we are now entering an excitin8 phase in the companrfs development and
are deeply consideKin8 the futu￿ of the organisatson.
Entelechy Arts is committed to working with communities who eXpel￿nce barriers to engaging with the
cultural life uf their local community. and creating excellent. pioneering and life-changing artistic work, and
creative practices. This incltsdes making opportunilie5 for personal crEativity. which are entirelv
person-centered. creating truly demtxratic, equal and accessible environment5 for artlStic exchangE. This a150
includes working with partners across the cultural. health. community and care sectors lo make lasting change
to systems that surround comrnunities who have previou5Jy been disproportionately affecred by health and
socio-economic barriers. Our work has a longer term positive impatt on placemakin8. strengthening local
communities. breaking down barriers between people who live. work and spend time nearby each other,
changin8 perceptions and creating new opportunities for creative conversations and exchange.
We know the Covid-19 pandervic means we will continue to work wth a degree of un￿n31nty as we respond
to the needs of our communitie5 and the parameters in which we need to work. Ambitlons lor the Thext
rjnancial year include.. returning safely to in person activitie5. Wlthout leaving any members behind who wish
to remain engaged on a remote bas¢s. testing the franchise model for Ambient Jam with a pilot of the
programme to take plate in Wales, pilot a new projett with Greenvale khool. begin Ambient Jam Collecti¥e'
Residency at Goldsmith'5 Centre for Contemporary Art, re-start our in-person works with care homes, produce
Theatre ol Wandering for Coventry UX City of Culture, and continuing our important role in contfibuting to
conversations around policy in the arts. health and community sectors. Our work will continue to engage with
industry and Eoverr*mental priorities. including ACE'S 10 year Strategy Let's Create. Whilst it is critical that we
remain ambttious. we are also aware of the funding dimate and the challenges particularly in relation to the
tompetition for funds ¢hat will manifest as the effects of the pandernic settle. As such we will continue to work
losely with the Board. stall team. artists and partners to support the oreanisation to flourish in these
circumstances.

Craft.
Theatre of Wandering.. A new theatocèl performance that draws upon z tommunity's experiences and
reflection5 about what il is to live with dementia. Co<reated with local re5ident5 of all ages in Coventry and
o-produced by Coventry City of Culture and Entelechy Art5. in a5SOClation with Oi89kkeShi Vapanl, BelKfade
Theatre and Belgrade Arts Gymnasium.
Walking Through Walls.. Walkin8 through Walls is a programme of long term collaly)ratiort with cère homes
and nursing homes in Lewisham, Tower Hamlets and Southwark. Workin8 tQEEther with re5ident5, their
families and staff. a rfeasure trove of amaiing stories are uncovered using words. music, poetry, Iheatre,
tactile art and dance through workshops. conversaiions and improvisations.

Since March 2020. the charity's face-to-face acliwties have been afferted by the outbreak of COVID 19 and Ihe
charity had to temw)farily close irs office. As a result. the charity Staff and volunteers worked remotely during
2012] to maintain all services using telephone. post. email. video eèlls and radio broadcast to help to continue
the majortty of the charl￿$ acriwities. The chatity has gradually returned io a blend of remote and sociallv
distanced face-to-face activities during 2V22.
