## **Annual Report & Accounts** 

## **February 2020 to January 2021** 

This year has been very challenging for everybody and especially so for charities.  As the pandemic hit we found all our usual fundraising activities stopped and our only way of raising money was by our online auctions and our lottery.  Many people found themselves working from home or on furlough and we had an unprecedented demand for dogs and cats.  We had an urgent call for a heavily pregnant Mastiff in a dog pound in Ireland and luckily she held on enabling us to get her passported and over to us before she gave birth to 12 puppies!  They were all ready to be rehomed the day the lockdown was imposed so were very lucky to be 8 weeks old on that day otherwise it would have meant staying with us 3 more months.

The demand in Ireland was so high we ceased taking dogs from them as there were none in the pounds, everyone it seems wanted a dog to see them through the pandemic.  This of course is very worrying, and we have seen dogs becoming victims of the pandemic as the world returned to some kind of normality, many people found themselves back at work and were unable to keep their dog. 

We have been very strict on rehoming throughout these strange times, ensuring as best we can that dogs are not taken on a whim and that people are fully committed to the needs of the dog not just for the present, but for the rest of the dog’s life. 

In order to satisfy the demand for dogs and to prevent people going to unscrupulous puppy farmers, we went further afield to help dogs in need.  We rescued dogs from Spain, Romania and Serbia as well as our usual local dogs. 

Cats too have been in high demand and sadly there are always plenty of them about needing help.  We had a call from someone who was a supporter of Heathlands asking if we could help out a hoarding situation.  A woman in a flat had in excess of 70 cats and they were all breeding indiscriminately.  We removed over 20 cats and kittens that were very scared as had not had much handling. They also had fleas and worms.  Several rescues were trying to help these unfortunate cats. Sadly, some did not become very tame and we are looking for stable/farm homes for them.

**Adoptions this year are as follows: 185 dogs,  23 cats, 4 small pets.** 

New Brexit laws concerning importation of dogs has also given us new challenges.  There is an awful lot more form filling and documentation needed.  Fortunately many foreign transporters take care of this on our behalf and we now seem to have got to grips with all that is needed to continue rescuing from abroad. 

The ongoing support of our foster carers, fundraisers and people that have adopted from us and continue to help us has been invaluable this year.  Times have not been easy for anyone and yet people have continued to help us financially and practically.  As we start to get used to living with Covid 19, we hope that we can continue to move forward and help more animals in need, and hopefully return to holding outdoor fundraising activities.
