“The Bosnia & Herzegovina UK Network exists both to provide practical, social and psychologi- cal support to all former residents of Bosnia and Herzegovina now living as refugees in the UK and also to share our experiences with, and provide support to other ethnic minority organisations in the voluntary sector.”

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

To promote any charitable purpose for the benefit of Bosnian and other refugees.

SUMMARY OF THE MAIN ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT IN RELATION TO THESE OBJECTS

In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustees meetings.

Our activities which demonstrate our public benefit are:

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

The BH UK Network was set up in 1996 to provide practical and psychological support to Bosni- an and other ethnic minority communities. The Committee consists of service users and service providers, including young, unemployed, elderly, vulnerable and disabled members of our com- munity. The trustees of the organisation meet regularly to plan its affairs. Duties are executed by one full time member of staff, two part-time staff and volunteers. All workers are fluent in both the Bosnian and English, written and spoken language.

Main aims of the BH UK Network include improving the quality of life for over 10,000 Bosnian refugees living in the United Kingdom, who moved over amidst the Balkan Wars. This includes a population who are physically and psychologically scarred as a result of the war and many of whom are in need of Lon-term on-going and consistent care. Their biggest barrier to accessing this care is their lack of knowledge of the English language, which is where our organisation plays a vital role.

The centre caters for these needs, in addition to providing social support and regular community- based activities at the Bosnia House in Birmingham. The Bosnia House is accessible to all at most times dur-

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the BH UK Network is a well-known event amongst Bosni- ans. It was held in January 2021, via zoom app due covid-19 pandemic rules, and joined by H.E.Vanja FIlipovic and representatives of Bosnian associations from Derby, Birmingham, Cov- entry, Hertfordshire, BH Advisory Centre London, Victoria London and the Women’s Association from Coventry and members of the Bosnian Centre for Advice from London.

This year we had the great honour that our Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina based in London, His Excellency Vanja Filipovic joined Statehood day and Independence Day online cel- ebrations in November 2020 and March 2021 with members of Bosnian Presidency and other distinguished participants.

COVID-19 has not stopped us working and helping our community members, especially vulner- able people who needed our help the most through this pandemic. Although Bosnia House had to restrict visits due Covid-19, the staff continued to work from the office, providing all necessary support by offering phone appointments, outreach support and one to one appointments where needed.

Our community members had been informed about the latest measures from the British Govern- ment through the website, fb and twitter, and our official newsletter. We kept reminding Bosnians about importance of the regular testing and vaccinations.

The bulk of masks and gloves had been posted to our members throughout the UK.

Also, we kept sharing information with the members of the Bosnian community in the UK, about the newest information in Bosnia such as information for pensioners. BH UK Network organised online meeting with representatives of the emigration sector of the Ministry of human rights and refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina, trying to update them with

We published several appeals on our social media, trying to contribute individuals and charity or- ganisation during these difficult months, such as supporting children without parental care SOS children’s Villages BiH ; collecting food donations in Bosnia House as part of the Feed Birming- ham project etc. Some of the highlight activities over the reporting period are:

• Online celebrations of Independence Day and Statehood Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina;

• Cooperation with Remembering Srebrenica on the UK commemoration of the 25th an-

niversary of the Srebrenica genocide, inviting the members of our community to share their stories and experiences as refugees and survivors of the war and

genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina;

chester providing various activities during coronavirus pandemic and marking the 20th anniversary of Bosnia supplementary school; Birmingham Bosnia and Herzegovina Association secured new laptops for supplementary school; BHCA Coventry gifting New Year’s presents;

• Promoting and supporting achievements of Network member organisations in the UK such as : BH Coventry Association officially registered as a charity; 25 years of successful work of the Bosnian Association in Derby; Bosnia and Herzegovina Community Association in Hertford- shire Celebrating 25 years ; Bosnia and Herzegovina Advisory centre in London providing sup- port to wider community during Covid 19; Bosnian school and society Man-

West Midlands project funded by Big Lottery Fund was set up as planned and brings positive change in the lives of Bosnians and Herzegovinians in the UK. There are 2 staff members who are available 24/7 and offer free, independent services. We set up regu-

lar weekly activities including 35 hours/week of professional support to address our beneficiaries’ needs. These activities en- courage more isolated people to come along to our events. We serve those most in need, those without family, friends or funds, those who cannot care for themselves especially with their lack of English language. We set up outreach service for elderly and/or disabled members of our community that are housebound in Birmingham, Walsall, Sandwell, Wolverhampton and Coventry; We have out of hours telephone that our outreach worker holds, so that our clients can access it 24 hours for any support; In last year 41 elderly and disabled clients accessed that number; They rung in regards to their hospital appointments, their medication, transport, welfare benefits, their rent; Our outreach worker supported with 17 volunteers provided support to housebound older members of our community; Regular drop in activities organised in St.Peters centre in Coventry were disrupted by Covid19; We are happy that we managed to reach the Roma community in Birmingham and Coventry helping them with educational, social and immigration issues; Over the reporting period we had to postpone several social events but hoping to start organising them as soon as lockdown restrictions stop; All above activities were set up and delivered with grate con- tributions from our volunteers that were recruited from our community and majority of them are service users.

There are a number of very useful lessons that we learned through the project that could be help- ful to any organisation that have an interest in helping members of our society; We are proud that we managed to organise so many activities including social gatherings, networking, and peer group activities with grate commitment from our staff and volunteers. During the reporting period, we kept our members informed by regularly updating our fb and website as well as regular tele- phone contact. We have learned a lot about running our own premises and services by using loc- al community input, trying and testing new activities and making better use of our volunteers and available resources. We share our experience with local regional and national organisations that help us to deliver planned activities, such as community organisations in the region, voluntary councils, NHS, Victim support.

We are now in position to help not just to our community, but other refugee groups. For example, as part of our Syrian project we run Syrian school that is attended by 120 children and have over 30 children on waiting list. We employed two extra staff funded by Birmingham City Council who are doing their best to offer and provide support and help the Syrian refugees. BH UK Network wants to help Syrian refugees in Birmingham and learning from our experience.

Activities for young people were run at weekends. This gives them opportunity share experience, socialise and speak their mother tongue language. Some of them act as unregistered carers as they look after older family members; We provided counselling to 42 carers in language and cul- turally appropriate manners. They are carers within families who help disabled and in poor health members of the family who do not speak English. ; 42 Carers and 121 young people benefited from our activities including social activities, peer group support, trips, indoor sports...

The main priority over the coming period is to secure further funding to continue providing support to the most vulnerable members of the society and improving facilities in Bosnia House that will enable us to provide much needed services for the benefit of our community.

Jennifer Stone-Wigg, M.B.E.

Jennifer Stone-Wigg, 71, was born and educated in England. She then moved to Switzerland, where her career in banking started. After retiring from the banking world, she started working at an art gallery, where she had the chance to meet Bosnian actors from Ratni Teatar (War Theater). This led to the beginning of her charitable work in B&H in 1995. In 2001, she founded her own organization.

Jennifer Stone-Wigg received M.B.E. (Member of British Empire) award in 2008 for her help with the underprivileged in Bosnia and humanitarian work. Jenny has been patron of BH UK Network since 2007.

Dr Waqar Azmi, O.B.E.

Dr Waqar Azmi is the Chairman of Remembering Srebrenica. He is also the Chairman of Waterhouse Consulting Group, and a Governor of Birmingham City University. He has also been the UK Government’s Chief Diversity Adviser at the Cabinet Office and the EU Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue.

He founded the British Federation of Racial Equality Councils, Herefordshire Race Equality Partnership and, Race Equality West Midlands. He has researched and published widely on Equality and Diversity issues, holding a doctorate in this field.

Waqar Azmi received an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2002 at the age of 32 by Her Majesty the Queen in recognition of his major contributions in the UK. Dr Waqar has been patron of BH UK Network since 2014.

The musical dedication of memory from Wales to Bosnia was created during the COVID-19 pandemic to mark the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

21/07/2020 - Manchester:20th Anniversary of Bosnian supplementary schools and 25th Anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide

The Bosnian School and Society Manchester (BSSM) marked the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Bosnian Supplementary School and the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. The gathering is organized online, via the Zoom application. More than fifteen participants addressed live or via video, and an average of about 70 people followed the event.

This is in accordance with the charil)Ps governing document, adopted on 18, May 1996 as amended on 8, December 1997, 1 l Oclober 2003 and 23, December 2005. Trustee selection methods A skills audit has been undertaken to discover those skills which are required by the trustee body. Efforts are made to recruit trustees who meet the skill requirement. Risk management policy The tnlstees examine the major risks that the charity faces each fmancial year when preparing and updating the strategic plan. The clwity has developed systems to monitor and control these risks to mitigate any impact that they may have on the charity in the ￿ture. FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES AND RESULTS RESERVES The Association aims to build up reserves to cover 6 months operating costs in the event of a drop in income. At the end of the year there were 8 Trustees. 1.1 Accounting convention These accounts have been prepared in a¢¢ordance with FRS 102. "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" ("FRS 102"), "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" the Statement of Recommended Practice for charities applying FRS 102, the Companies Act 2006 and UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice as it apples from l January 2015. The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102. The accounts are prepared in Sterling which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements to the nearest £. The accounts have been p￿pared on historical cost convention apart from freehold propety that is carried at market value. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below. These are accounts for the year ended 31 March 202 lare the first accounts of Bosnia and Herzegovina UK Network prepared in accordance with FRS 102. The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland. 1.2 Going concern At the time of approving the accounts, the trnstees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable ￿ture. Thus the TTh￿tees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the accounts. 1.3 Charit2bl¢ Funds Unrestricted fijnds are available for use at the discretion of the tn￿teeS in furtherance of the general objectives of the Ch￿lty. Designated funds are unrestricted funds earnwked by the trustees for particular pU￿oses. Restricted fijnds are subjected to restrictions on their expenditure imposed by the donor or througb the tenns of an appeal. 1.4 Incoming resources All incoming resources are included in the SOFA when the charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. Gifts in kind have been included at market value of gifts received and in assets acquired. No amounts are included in the fmancial statements for services donated by volunteers. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with use of the resources. Fund-raising costs are those incurred in seeking voluntary contributions and do not include the costs of disseminating inforniation in the support of the charitable activities. 1.6 Debtors Trade and other debtors are recognised at tbe settlement amount due after any trade discounts offered. Prepaym¢nts are valued at th¢ amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due. 1.7 Cash and eash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, oth¢r short- tenn liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabiliti¢s. 1.8 Creditors and provisions Creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and pmvisions are nornMlly recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due. 1.9 Finanelal Instruments The charity has financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value. Derecognition off￿ancIal liabilities Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity's contractual obligations expire or are discharg¢d or canc¢ll¢(L 1.10 Employee benefits The cost of any unus¢d holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee's services are received. Tern]ination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity is demonstrably committed to tem]inate the employment of an employee or to provide terniination benefits. 1.11 Taxation The charity is exempt from tax on income and gains falling with section 505 of the Taxes Act 1988 or section 252 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 to the extent that these are applied to its charitable objects. 28 Annual Report202O-2021

The Norton Foundation money was to buy equipment and furnitLwe that will be used for activities in our community centre. Birniingham city Council (Government small business grant) was to be spent bon respondimg to COVID Clothworkers Foundation was spent on Purchasing equipment so that staff can work from home during the pandemic. Birniingham Neighbourhood Scheme was spent providing regular weekly activities in Bosnia House for local residents. Independent Age fund was to support older members of our community during the pandemic.
