SECRETARIES REPORT 2021/22

September 2021: Our first talk of 2021 after re opening in May this year was on 6[th] September from Tom Hartdyke who is always very welcome here at C.A.N.E. and always keeps everyone entertained with his various tales of travels and gardening. On 18[th] September we had our first post pandemic evening quiz, the quizzers were so glad to be back but understandably a little apprehensive about being in an enclosed space. But all went well and we were pleased to see Alan Syred here again and on Saturday 25[th] September, Anne had her first post pandemic lunch. The number of people enjoying the lunches has been cut by almost 50% as she has lost a number of her helpers though one thing or another and therefore needs to make things a little easier for those that remain.

October 2021: On Monday October 4[th] we had Steve Roberts talking about being a Scotland Yard detective. Interesting tales from his working life. On 18[th] October was an afternoon quiz, with Colin and Daphne Curtess running the questions and answers and Ann and her team running the coffee shop. Always enjoyed.

November 2021: We had two Monday talks in November. On 1[st] we had The History of Bermondsey with Lesley Broster and on the 15[th,] we had My Life as a Bodyguard to Her Majesty the Queen by Richard Griffin. This was part two of a talk we had in October 2019. On 21[st] November we saw the return of the much loved Greenwich University Big Band, always a sell-out concert for C.A.N.E. On Saturday 29[th] November Anne had her Christmas lunch which was enjoyed by all that came.

December 2021: On Saturday December 4[th] we had a Christmas evening quiz followed on Monday 6[th] by Tony Strange as a pantomime dame. He is a very imposing figure at over 6 foot in his heels and always gets our audiences laughing with his jokes and antics. Our last event of the year was on Tuesday 14[th] December with an afternoon quiz. We then closed for deep cleaning and re decorating on 18[th] December ready to open up in January 2022.

January 2022: On January 17[th] Jim Buttress was here to tell us about many things gardening related. On 23[rd] January we had the first tea dance of 2022 and on 30[th] January was our first senior citizens party since January 2020. All events were very well attended.

February 2022: On Friday February 4[th] Tom Gregory was here to tell us about how he (at age 11) swam the channel. A really interesting afternoon with Tom and his parents came too. On Sunday February 13[th] we had another tea dance. These are run by a vice chairperson – Alan Harris and are very well attended. Saturday 26[th] February saw Annes lunch, always well attended, although sometimes there’s a last-minute scrabble to fill cancelled places.

March 2022: On Monday 7[th] March we had Barbara Stevens talking about Downe Dames – Body Painting. On 13[th] March was another tea dance on 26[th] March the first evening quiz of 2022.

April 2022: On 4[th] April, we had Mark Wasilewski who is in charge of the Royal Parks, here to talk about the history of St James’ Park and on 13[th] April a tea dance.

May 2022: On 9[th] May, Bob Ogley was here with a talk entitled “Biggin on the Bump”. Bob has written more than 20 books and is an authority about Sevenoaks and Kent. Saturday May 14[th] saw us have our first table top sale since October 2019. It was such a successful day that many of the stall holders pre booked the October table top. On Saturday 28[th] May we had another evening quiz and on 29[th] May another tea dance.

June 2022: This month we had an afternoon quiz on June 7[th] and on Saturday 12[th] we had a Queens Jubilee Platinum Tea which were both sell outs. At the afternoon tea we were entertained by Nigel Garrard Live Music. On 25[th] June had her last Saturday lunch of the financial year.

July 2022: On Saturday July 9[th] we had a 60’s night here at C.A.N.E. with a young theatre company called The Rah Rah Theatre Group. This was a fun evening bringing back lots of memories of 60’s music and ended up with an hour or so of games run by Alan Harris.

August 2022: This month is traditionally a quiet period for C.A.N.E. when people relax or go away on holiday. We did keep the coffee shop open with volunteers who were prepared to come in for us and on 28[th] July Alan held another tea dance as they are very popular with local dance enthusiasts.

2021-22 has been the first full year open since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. We still have problems with our under used coffee shop and have tried a number of ways to get people in. Some of our volunteers have dropped a day or so as there is very little for them to do when they are here. We will have to play it by ear as to what happens to the coffee shop in the remains of the year.

We are lucky to have both hard-working volunteers and our part time paid staff to support this centre. My thanks go to Anne Read and our coffee shop volunteers. Anne organises the afternoon speakers and the coffee shop for the afternoon quizzes. She also organises the volunteers rota for the coffee shop and the volunteers in the coffee shop. She cooks a fantastic two course meal for the lunch club members and makes all the cakes for our many events and homemade cake tables, she is a very busy lady and we are lucky to have her to support us.

Thanks to Alan Harris who helps considerably with a lot of our events. He has taken on the Friday afternoon “Skittle” group which has an enjoyable couple of hours playing games, answering quiz questions and enjoying a cup of tea and a cake. He also has a very busy and successful tea dance on a Sunday afternoon. My thanks to the committee, (some of who are trustees). They take responsibility for the sound being of C.A.N.E.

Finally, Sue Killick for her dedication and professionalism in the way she runs the community centre on behalf of the committee, and supports the users of the centre. Sue has been in post for 18 years now and has proved that C.A.N.E. needs a permanent and enthusiastic person in place to manage such a busy and well used centre.

COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION of NEW ELTHAM

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees

I report to the Trustees and members of the Community Association of New Eltham on the accounts of the Charity for the twelve months which are set out on pages 2 to 6.

Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and the Examiner

The Charity's Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43 (2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act) as amended by section 28 of the Charities Act 2006 and 2011) and that an Independent Examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

Examine the accounts (under section 43 of the Act, as amended);

To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under 43 (7)(b) of the Act, as amended); and

To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of Independent Examiner's report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

Independent Examiner's Statement

In the course of my examination no matter has come to my attention:

(a) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the Trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that:

proper accounting records are kept (in accordance with section 41 of the Act); and accounts are prepared which agree with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act;

(b) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Signed:
