SECRETARIES REPORT 2020/21
September 2020: Our first talk of the new financial year was by Kevin Tooher to a restricted audience of 30 people. From 14[th] September we couldn’t even have this number of people in our rooms together and so all other events (such as the afternoon and evening quizzes) were cancelled.
October 2020: We had no afternoon talk in October due to restriction of numbers, but our afternoon teas started with 6 isolated people to try to get them out to meet others. Classes carried on with social distancing in place. There was obviously no craft fair this month.
November 2020: On November 5[th] the Government ordered lockdown number 2 and we had to close the doors of our community centre. We were lucky to receive a business interruption grant from Greenwich Council this month and the first of the furlough payments for our paid members of staff. This was 80% of their full wage and C.A.N.E. topped it up to 100%.
December 2020: C.A.N.E. closed
January 2021: C.A.N.E. closed
February 2021: C.A.N.E. closed
March 2021: C.A.N.E. closed
April 2021: C.A.N.E. closed
May 2019: On 17[th] May, we were allowed to re-open after 6 months. Our classes came back gradually with short mat bowling, table tennis and the craft club being amongst the first of our own groups back. Our coffee shop re opened staffed by 1 volunteer to make tea and coffee for our bowlers. Pilates, line dancing and Slimming World also returned with restricted numbers and social distancing. We had no C.A.N.E. events.
June 2021: This month we had an afternoon tea and an afternoon talk for 6 and 30 people respectively. Katz Eyes and Taekwondo joined the other classes to return and things started to get a little busier.
July 2021: On 19[th] July, most restrictions were lifted in England, which meant that we could have 2 volunteers in the coffee shop and so we started offering cooked food again. Our event this month were two afternoon teas which we were able to open up to a few more people at one time.
August 2021: This month is traditionally a quiet period for C.A.N.E. when people relax or go away on holiday. However, this year we tried to keep things as open as possible, although it was a struggle at times to keep the coffee shop going. We had our (by now) regular afternoon teas.
As you can see from the calendar above, C.A.N.E. has not been able to keep income steady due to restrictions and closures, but we have been fortunate in receiving business interruption grants and furlough payments which have kept us in the black.
We are lucky to have both hard-working volunteers and our part time paid staff to support this centre. My thanks go to Anne Read and our coffee shop volunteers. Anne organises the afternoon speakers, and the volunteers in the coffee shop. She also cooks a fantastic two course meal for the lunch club members and makes all the cakes for our many events and homemade cake tables, she is a very busy lady and we are lucky to have her to support us.
Thanks to Alan Harris who helps considerably with a lot of our events and has been a driving force behind the afternoon teas since starting them with Anne. I believe we have a waiting list of people wanting to come along.
My thanks to the committee, (some of who are trustees). They take responsibility for the sound being of C.A.N.E.
Finally, Sue Killick for her dedication and professionalism in the way she runs the community centre on behalf of the committee, and supports the users of the centre. Sue has been in post for 17 years now and has proved that C.A.N.E. needs a permanent and enthusiastic person in place to manage such a busy and well used centre.

COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION of NEW ELTHAM
Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees
I report to the Trustees and members of the Community Association of New Eltham on the accounts of the Charity for the twelve months which are set out on pages 2 to 6.
Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and the Examiner
The Charity's Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 43 (2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act) as amended by section 28 of the Charities Act 2006 and 2011) and that an Independent Examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
Examine the accounts (under section 43 of the Act, as amended);
To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under 43 (7)(b) of the Act, as amended); and
To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.
Independent Examiner's Statement
In the course of my examination no matter has come to my attention:
(a) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the Trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that:
proper accounting records are kept (in accordance with section 41 of the Act); and accounts are prepared which agree with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act;
(b) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
