The charity is run by a committee currently consisting of 7 members who are elected annually at the AGM. The committee oversees the running of the charity and shares joint responsibility for decision-making.

The principal object of the society is to educate the public in the operatic arts of Gilbert and/or Sullivan to further the development of public appreciation and taste in the said arts to assist and further such charitable institutions and charitable purposes as the Committee shall from time to time determine.

The company put on a winter cabaret which helped to draw in new audiences and raise funds for the main production. The production was called ‘A Grand Night for Singing: a Night at the Music Hall’, and was directed by Mark Pim, a member of GLOC. The production featured a selection of songs from music hall, musicals, Cockney favourites and Gilbert and Sullivan, plus a comedy melodrama written by members of the company. It played to a full audience on Thursday 1 December 2022 at Walthamstow Trades Hall.
On 14[th] December, GLOC were once again able to hold their annual carol singing event in Trafalgar Square, which helped to raise money for the charity. GLOC’s main production in 2023 was The Grand Duke by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. There were five public performances at the Bridewell Theatre, London from Wednesday 7 to Saturday 10 June 2023 (including a matinee performance on the Saturday). The production was directed by Vicky Simon and the musical director was Christopher Jacklin.
The Grand Duke is Gilbert and Sullivan’s last collaboration and is rarely produced; it was last performed by GLOC in 2006. Consequently, it attracted a large cast of 45 members eager to take the opportunity to be in the production.

The set was designed and constructed by Christopher Jacklin with the assistance of members of the company. Many of the costumes were also made by members of the company to reflect the theme of playing cards that permeates the opera. The company produced a programme with background notes and context about the opera which helped to inform the audience about the production. The production attracted full audiences including a sold-out matinee and introduced many people to this rarely performed Gilbert and Sullivan opera for the first time. The company was invited back to perform at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton. GLOC put on a sell-out matinee performance of The Grand Duke at the Pavilion Arts Centre on 4 August 2023. This was a rewarding experience for the cast and enabled the company to bring their work to a wider audience.

GLOC is an organisation run by volunteers. The productions could not take place without the enormous contribution of time and expertise given by so many of the members. During the past year, volunteers designed and built the set for The Grand Duke , made costumes for the principals and chorus, and created props for the show.

Volunteers also helped with lighting, carried out publicity and marketing and ensured that the charity was administered effectively. This helped members to learn and apply new skills while supporting the company’s core aims.
Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
The charity had a successful year and finished in a stronger position both artistically and financially. The main production, The Grand Duke, played to full audiences both in London and in Buxton at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. It is rare for this opera to be performed with a full chorus and orchestra, so GLOC’s production enabled many people to see this opera for the first time and increased appreciation of a rare work by Gilbert and Sullivan in accordance with the charitable objectives of the company.
The production received some very complimentary feedback. Some audience comments were as follows:
“ There was so much to enjoy in the show. It is great to see GLOC still performing G and S and particularly such a rarity as The Grand Duke. I thought the chorus items were very strong and lively and the stage looked wonderful in the Galop and Roulette scenes."
“What a great show! Beautifully played, conducted, sung and produced … A joy from start to finish.” The production was reviewed by the Classical Source website. The reviewer noted:
“The show was exuberant and colourful – the company filling the confined stage areas of the Bridwell Theatre with some excellent choreography, full throated ensemble and crisp diction throughout.”
The Buxton production was sold out and the company received many favourable comments, including: “It really was first rate and opened our eyes to the piece.” The President of the Sullivan Society, who also regularly adjudicates the University productions at the Festival, provided a glowing write-up of the production: “This show was a delight from start to finish … there was so much cleverness and originality on display … Superb costumes – the playing card-themed outfits of most of the principals were inspired and spectacular … the scenes with the Monte Carlos might have just been the funniest take on them I have ever seen … the business in the song I can only describe as a stroke of brilliance – a human roulette wheel! … Had it been an adjudicated performance this scene would have been a shoo-in for the Adjudicator’s Special Award.”

Section D Achievements and performance The large cast contributed a good level of subscriptions, allowing the company to cover its rehearsal costs whilst also offering reduced rates to some members in straitened financial circumstances. The company finished the year with a healthy surplus which allowed it to subsidise the cost of taking the production to Buxton.

| The Committee’s aspiration for reserves is that the charity will hold sufficient reserves at the year-end to cover the costs of a show without receiving ticket sale income or subscription income. The charity typically incurs all show costs before receiving any ticket income, so this policy means that in the event of a show being cancelled after incurring costs, the charity would still be in a position to meet the ordinary cash flow costs involved in putting on the next show. This will also act as a cushion against lower than anticipated receipts or unforeseen circumstances. The full cost of putting on the summer production, including rehearsal and production costs, is around £18,000. The Committee therefore aspires to hold between £15,000–£18,000 in reserve, to provide a buffer against any sudden financial shock. At the year-end, GLOC had £25,000 in the bank account. This is in line with the reserves policy and leaves the company in a stable position to support the next year’s activities, especially in a climate of rising prices putting pressure on the charity’s expenditure. |

Responsibilities and basis of report
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31/ 07/ 2023 .
As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
