HOUNSLOWANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY
ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2022
Thanlrfully, 2022 Saw our day-to-day operations gradualty return to nonnal after the covtd-struck
previous 2 years. Restrictions on wntact with others were removed, which meant W8 could fully
undertak8 home-Vi8it8. resoues and trappings etc, and hav8 batter liaison with our wonderful
veterinary partners.
In 2022 our charity cared for 363 animals, 257 of which V￿re taken in throughout the year. OF these,
246 were adult rAts or kn'ttens. wrth a number bom to mum-cats whilst in our Care. 8 rabbFts. 2 guinea
pigs, and 1 hamster made up the total. We continue our practice of homing our reso*d animals
already vaccinated, microchipped and neutered, age pemitting.
HAWS ha8 a non4e8lNction policy and only adv¢xate8 euthanasia If an animal is too seriously ill or
injured for any hope of recovery. Unfortunately, we lost 14 cats in our care this year, 11 less than in
2021. These were aduEt cats with unre801vabl8 medical i89ues and neonatal kittens who had no* had
the best start in life.
Over th8 year we rehomed 198 cats and klttens and 4 rabblts. We 8130 contlnued to deal with feral
cat colonies, trappin9, nwt•rlng. arKI retuming to $ite whorn théy romain und8r the care of members
of the publlc who feed them and generally IcM)k out for them. 30 cats were either retum to 8rte or to
ownors during 2022. At any onè time we rouiinely hava over 120 ¢at8 and klttens In f08t8r care and
at the end of 2022 had 14 ¢at8 and 1 hamster in pemanent sanctuary. Before adoption, all our
animals are lodged and cared for In the home8 of our dedicated volunteer foster carers who take an
aGtlve part In the rehomlng proc￿. We also work with a number of excellent v•t•rinary 8urgerle8,
wh•r6 all our cats are Inftlally takon for medlcal treatment and check-ups prlor to ft)stering - they
support u• pradlcally and financially by dl•countlng our blll8, whlch ￿1p3 ma881v•ly to reduce our
veterinary co8t$ during the year.
Throughout 2022, we continued to receive a high level of contacts by telephone. email etG keeping
volunteer8 extremely busy. Together with calls requesting help with feral, stray, and abandoned cat8
and small anlmals, In the latter part of the year there wa8 a blg IncAease in requests for u8 to take In
unwantéd pets- po88lbly a kn1Xk￿n from COVID.
In 2022 our Income tiltalled £321,692.86 of whith £275,085.70 ¢ame from legaoes. Our food and
litter costs combined increa3ed to just under £7.750.00, 81m08t double the prevlous year. This
refiecled an increase In day-to4ay needB. and a fall in the amount of food donats'ons. Our heaviest
outlay was agaln on v•t•rinary expen8e8. In 2022 the88 totslled £115,111.12, more than double the
bllls In 2021. Th18 wa8 attributed to An Incrnase In veterinary fe￿, grKI costs incurred in treatlng
several Cats and ￿ttonS who had quite ¢ompFex medlcal needs. A drop in adoptlons meant many had
to be boarded at vets for 8everal weeks before they could be moved to a foster home. Our expen8•S
for the year totalled £132.378.61- an und8r-8P8nd of £189,314.25 again8t income. As in 2021. had
we not received the legacies we could not havo halped 80 mary animals during the year.
We were able to rotum to normal fund-raising actIV￿leS In 2022. We attended the Ealing Animal
Welfare Bazaar in March and the Christmas Craft Fair in November both wtlh good resums. Pets at
Home contlnued their support for us, raislng money and donating food, which was very gratefully
received. We were also able to be present fortheir'santa Paws. fundraising events during De￿Mber.
Sainsburys in ChÈswick also continued to host our pet food donation bin, with exGell8nt results.
Our website remains the main point of contact for our chanty and is a vital tool in our rehoming efforts.
All animals that are fft to be rehomed are published online and thi8 18 becked by our comprehensive
database re￿rdIng the history of each animal from rescue to rehoming. Every single aspect of the
charity is run by unpaid volunteers. enabling us to use our funds solely for animal r8scue and care.
The Trustees extend heartfelt thanks to all of HAWS, volunteers for their hard work and dedication-
without them the charity could not function.
