on 26 June 1997 and has sister charities Tegistered in India and the USA. The inspiration came from Raj's lat¢
mother: Shrimati Pushpa Wati LoombA who became awidow at the eaTly age of 37 and succeeded in edueating
her seven chiLdren singi&handed.
TheFoundationwas officially launcbed inLondon on25 MaTch 1998, in the presemce of the Primeminister. The
RL Hon. Tony BlairMP, and his Ni'ife Cherie Blair. The Foundation a]so received the sUPPOrt oftbe Honourdble
Prime Minister ofIndiA Shri Atal Bei]ari Vajpayee, who inaugurated the Foundation in New Delhi on31 m￿ch
1999, by lighting a ceretnonial larnp aÉ bis resid¢nc& The ¢er¢mony was attended by Sir Rob Young GCMC,
British High CoJTuni&%ioner.
TheLoomba Foundation was also 0￿1Cla11Y launched in Scotlandin 2(X)3. in theUSA in 2005. in South Afric&in
2006, in Kellya and RThanda in 2008 and in Canada in 2009.
Ob ectives and Activities: The Foundation is constituied by Trust Desj and its objects and aims are to promote
the welfare and education of the children of widowsy orpban¢d ¢hildr¢n and children who have lost their
mothets ag a result Of natural disaster and for other auxiliary purpos¢s as the Trustees may determine. In
accordance with its grant-makiDg w)licy. the FoU[￿atIOn currently makes grdnts to its sister charity in Indii the
Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba Foundation, to fulfill its aforesaid aim& This sister ¢harity distributes funds to
support ¢hildrenin India. The Board ofTntstees hasd¢cid¢d to incI￿]e empowermentofimp)verished widows in
India and around the world.
Cherie BlairCBE QC. wifeof the form¢rBritish Primeminister. who I￿camethefj1¥t Patron of theFouDdation
in 1998. agreed to become the PTvsid¢nt and officially inaugurntcd IAM)mba House in London on 8 September
2004. Over Ihc ycars, Mrs Blair EE&S continued to travel to v￿lD￿S countiies to attend the Fow)dation's events in
order to raise awareness of the plight of widows attd their childTen around the world.
Sir Ricljard Branson xgreed to become Patroll-iniknief in 21K14. Hehas attendedth¢Found&tion'sfiuJth?ising
events in India and South Afri¢& He has also supported the Foundation by maLing an appeal on BBC Radio 4 ID
2004, and he raised over £500,000 through three 'Ch￿¢ lor ChildTh' appeals on Virgin Atlantic flights
worldwide.
International Widows Day- Flagship: The L￿Mba Foundation launched Int¢rnalional Widows Da), whi¢h
tak-es place eactL year on 23 June, to highligbt the plight of ￿idoWS and their children all over the world and to
provide a focus for effective action. The date of 23 June was chosen because it was on this day th2t Lord
Loomba's mother, Shrimati Pushpa Wati L(N)mba, the inspiration for the Foundatioffj became a widow in 1954.
This flagship ofthe Foundation was arutounced at the House of Lords in the UK on 26 May 2IK>5, which was
followed by launches in India on 7 September 2005 aDd the USA on ?1 OctolKr 2005, respectively. The US
launch was attended by His Excellency Kofi Alula￿ Secrelary General of the Uniled Nations.

and destrctyed economy all over the world. It has spared no country. Sadfy, the lockdown5 and government
restrlctlons have Impacted on charities. The Loornba Foundation was no except￿)n.
DDnatlon of sur￿¢al face masks durfng Aprll 2020
The Loomba Foundation donated I(J].￿o surgical face masks to Nlti Aayog In Ind￿ durlng Aprfl 2020, to help
flght agalnst Covld-19. The Loomba Foundation worked c105ety with HLL Lrfecare Ltd, a nodal company of the
Ministry of Health and Famlly Weffare, Government of India.
HLL Llfecare Lid is the main agency fDr the distributlon of the face masks and protective equipment to all
regions and population suffering from Covtd-19.
Lord Loomba CBE, Founder and Chalrman Trustee of the Loomba Foundation, a strong advocatefor poorand
needy widows across the world, emphasised why everyone should play their part, underlinin8 that we
wanted to play a small role to help the vulnerable people as the world come5 together in these difficu
times.

Lord Loomba CBE hosted a webinarto mark UN International Widows Dayon 23rdJune 2020to ratse awareness
of the impact of COVID-19 on widows worldwide and to tallforinternat*onal supportfor widow5, empowerment
both financially and socially.
Chairman and Founder Trustee of the Loomba Foundation sald, .￿ latest estimates show that there are 258
million widowed women gkjbally and the current figures will be much higher especially as Covid-19 has
eKaeerbated thls situation. The role of local governmentsto support thelrwelfare cannL)t be undermined, and
the G20 countrie5 must find a way to help support these and grassroot efforts to help widows."

The Loomba Foundation and Naviyoii India Foundation launched Project Jeeva to mark International Women's
Day In Gurugram on March 8, 2021. ProjectJeeva- RediscoverlnKthe spirit in the Ilvèg of widows, is supported
byThe Loomba Foundation, and conceptuallseil & implemented bythe Navjyoti India Foundation in association
wtth the Dlstrict Legal se￿Ces Authority, Gurugram.
A survey ¢onducted by the NGO in the rural parts of Sohna Block, Gurugram revealed the dlre economie,
physlcal, and mental situation of these women who have lost their husbands early in lthe. The prDjett aims to
provide need-based counselling to the women and theirfamilies. frdcilitate linkages forthemto avail legal aid and
varlous welfare schemes and help build their self*steem. confKlence, and Itfe skills.
The project was Introduced by M5. Chandni Bedi. Dlrector of Rural Management and Trainlng Institute, Navjytsti
Indla Foundation. Mr. Atul Palta, Director - Skills Training and Empowerment from The Loomba Foundatlon
shared aboutthe mlssion of the Foundation and the ways 5kilL5 training and employment have eFnpowered the
wldow5 not just In India but globally as well.
Other panel members were Ms. Munmun Goyal,Advocatefrom D65trict Wal SeNice5Authortty, Gurugram and
Mr. Suresh KumarTaneJa, Sectiun Officer. District Socialjullice Department, Gurugram at50 took part In panel
dlscussion and replled to the qverles of audience.
Nirmala and Angoori Devi, two young wldow5 who have been 5UPPOrted by Naviyotl Indla Foundatlon under
Project Unnati, shared their success story of mnning a boutique and selling home-made spices. Mr. Hemant
Kumar and Pawan Kumar. Team members of the Loomba Foundation were also present during the Launch of
Jeeva Project. After a spirlted discussion and questionsfrom the aUd￿nce, made up of widow5 from Sohna Block,
the vote of thanks was dellvered by Ms. Ujala Chaudhary, Executlve Director of Navtyotl Indla Foundation.
Other Prolects:_
We have continued empowerlng impoverished widows through our partnership projett with Rotary Indla
Literdcy M155ion. Csuring the year, the project has been seiiou51y hindered by the lockdowns and government
restrlctions as a resuh of Covid-19 pandem￿ in India. However, we have still managed to empower 1593 wldows
in the state5 of Delhi, West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
Future plans for 2021-22
The Loomba Foundatlon will hosta global virtualconference on 23rd June to markthe 10th Unlted
Nations. International Widow5 Day. founded to take artion io address the poverty and Injustice
faced by widows
We ère planning our annual event at the House of Lords on 6th December, 2021, 2nd hopeto InV￿e
Parliamentsrians from the both Houses and business kaders In the UK.
We will continue wfth our empowerment projects in India and very much hope to launch a new
project to empower widows in the union terrltory of JamFnu and Kashmir.
