JUST FOR DOGS (EAST MIDLANDS)

Trustees' Annual Report

Year Ended 31 August 2024

The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 August 2024.

Achievements and Performance

In our 27[th] year our rehoming figures have reached an all-time high.

Social Media continues to be our best platform for highlighting the dogs we have for adoption and for promoting our in-house fundraising events,

Within a few weeks of the financial year we found ourselves launching a fundraising appeal for Murphy, a small collie type dog, who had arrived several months previously with a distinct limp, there were some reports that as a pup Murphy had caught his leg in a fence, badly twisting it. There was hope that as Murphy matured, things could improve and his leg would get stronger and less painful for him, but sadly the opposite proved to be the case and in September 2023 Murphy was looking at amputation and we were looking at raising £1,550 to fund it. Our supporters did not let us down and within a few weeks of the appeal enough money was raised to support the surgery. Delighted to say that the surgery all went according to plan, helped by the fact that his convalescence was spent in his new warm, kind, caring and loving home.

As well as rehoming figures being on the increase, There have been some extremely rewarding adoptions of some of JFD’s long-term dogs.

Blaze arrived at JFD in March 2020 along with his sister Zoe. Both dogs seriously lacked socialization skills and they immediately became shut down wanting no contact from anybody. After four years at JFD, in March 2024, Blaze was fortunate enough to be offered a secure, experienced and understanding home.

Lara was another young dog who, like Blaze, had no socialization skills and after one adoption, she was returned to JFD where she appeared to be a happier dog and bonds, bridges and trust was built. Lara made great progress and began to interact well with her carers and in November 2023, two years after she’d first arrived at JFD, she found her forever home.

Bubba was a young dog when she arrived at JFD in 2017 and was adopted after a few weeks. After several months her adopter was saying that Bubba had become overprotective of her house and family. Training tips and advice was given and the couple managed her protectiveness well. However, in December 2021 we received a call saying that Bubba would have to be returned to JFD due to the sudden illness of a family member. Because of her overprotective tendencies she remained at JFD for a further two years, until a lovely retired couple applied to adopt her. Careful introductions were implemented and the couple visited Bubba on a regular basis to get to know her and gain her trust. Following regular visits over a four week period Bubba was taken to her forever home and became the third resident on a large narrowboat. Regular updates came in of Bubba’s adventures travelling Britain’s waterways.

Bertie, arrived at JFD towards the end of 2021. While rapidly making friends with staff and JFD volunteers, like Bubba, he displayed guarding issues around his kennel, staff and regular voluntary dog walkers. Following two failed adoptions and 26 months at JFD, in March of this year Bertie finally found his forever home. He was to be the third JFD dog adopted by this couple, with their previous dogs also having been adopted with their own set of problems, we were confident Bertie’s new mum and dad had the experience to handle Bertie’s problematic issues. Latest reports tell us Bertie is living the dream, well loved and has recently returned from a holiday in Snowdonia.

At the close of 2024 we still have 4 long term dogs Nino (arrived, summer 2017), Zoe (arrived spring 2020) Fonzi (arrived summer 2020) and Dexter (arrived May 2023) and whilst we are a rescue and rehoming centre, not a sanctuary our commitment and support for any long-term dogs remain in place for as long as they need us.

The above stories are testament to the strict non-destruct policies we hold at JFD, while maintaining complete support and rescue backup for all dogs adopted from Just For Dogs.

Trustees' Annual Report (continued)

Year Ended 31 August 2024

Fundraising

Income largely consists of Donations, Adoptions, Direct Debit Schemes, Fundraising and Legacies.

Our monthly fundraising events held throughout the Autumn & Winter remain highly successful for fundraising, rehoming and promoting the work our charity undertakes. The trustees would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers who not only work hard on the day of the event, arriving before 7am to clean the kennels and to feed and exercise all the dogs before opening our doors at 10am. Also, to our dedicated staff members who all clock out at 10am (but carry on working as volunteers) so that not a penny of the event money raised, is taken away in wages. There is also an increased workload the day before each event - accumulating and ticketing up tombola prizes, sorting and displaying the many items donated to our charity shop, cleaning and converting our reception area into tea rooms and cash and carry runs are undertaken in preparation for refreshments – cakes, teas, coffees, pastries, homemade soups and sandwiches.

We are extremely fortunate to have such a large team of very dedicated volunteers, who regularly commit their time to early morning kennel cleaning, dog walking, social media updates and fundraising. They are of tremendous help to our staff and help to keep our wage bill to an absolute minimum allowing more donated money to go directly to the running of the rescue centre.

As a charity we really are so lucky to have such an invaluable and hardworking team of genuine animal lovers.

Our partnership continues with the amazing team at Gravity Digital, a digital marketing company based in Derby, who have overseen the design and updates of our website since 2016. This year they updated and redesigned our website, giving a complete overhaul and we are delighted with the upgrade. All their work is completely free of charge and we are so lucky to receive their ongoing support.

Always grateful to our Patrons Ellie Williams and footballer Will Hughes for their generous annual donation and support in the work we do.

Objectives and Activities

The Trust is an unincorporated body and operates a non-destruction policy. The Charity's purposes are set out in the constitution. The charity objectives are:

Year Ended 31 August 2024

The number of unwanted family pets requiring our services is noticeably reducing year on year as many homes are advertised, sold, and bought via social media with families managing to rehome through friends and family reducing the need for them to come into rescue. In order to avoid empty kennels and once the need of local dogs have been met, we have offered vacant kennel spaces to our rescue partners in Bosnia and Romania.

Organisation

The trustees meet on a regular basis at which the funds available are discussed. The trust has several key volunteers who help out at the Sanctuary, run, and support fundraising events and also attend other local events to promote the Charity, we are eternally grateful to these volunteers without who we would be hard pushed to continue all aspects of our work to such a high standard. Also, to our dedicated staff members who also commit to untold hours of voluntary work throughout the year.

Financial Review

Financial Position

During this year the charity's total incoming resources were £160,384 (2023: £165,184). The resources were mainly from Donations, Adoptions, Legacies, Events / Fundraising / Prizes. Total resources expended were £170,045 (2023: £169,236). The unrestricted funds of the charity at 31 August 2024 amounted to £417,313 (2023: £426,975).

We are pleased with the charities financial position, particularly compared to previous years, we have shown a significant increase in income for another year.

Risk Management

The trustees have examined the major strategic, business, and operational risks which the trust faces and confirms that systems have been established to enable regular reports to be produced so that necessary steps can be taken to lessen the risks. Unfortunately, we have seen a considerable downturn in donations which is, we believe, a reflection of the current financial climate and we are looking at ways to promote and encourage supporters to sign up to our monthly direct debit scheme.

Plans For Future Periods

As always, our main objectives for the year ahead will be securing the financial future for JFD. We hope to continue with the upward trend of helping more dogs whilst maintaining the quality of families, couples and individuals stepping forward to adopt.

In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention:

Notes To The Accounts

3. Accounting policies (continued)

Incoming resources

All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when entitlement has passed to the

charity; it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the charity and the

amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:

Resources expended

Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is classified under headings of the statement of financial activities to which it relates:

All costs are allocated to expenditure categories reflecting the use of the resource. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs are apportioned between the activities they contribute to on a reasonable, justifiable, and consistent basis.

Grants

Grants received are credited to incoming resources once any related goods or services are expended or delivered. Any grants received but where the related goods or services have not yet been expended or delivered are classified as Deferred Income.

Tangible assets

Tangible assets are initially recorded at cost, and subsequently stated at cost less any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Any tangible assets carried at revalued amounts are recorded at the fair value at the

date of revaluation less any subsequent accumulated depreciation and subsequent accumulated impairment losses.
