JUST FOR DOGS (EAST MIDLANDS)
Trustees' Annual Report
Year Ended 31 August 2023
The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 August 2023.
Achievements and Performance
T his has been the most successful year all round for Just For Dogs, in its 26 year history. Adoptions are up, Donations are up and Fundraising is up.
Social Media continues to be our best platform for highlighting the dogs we have for adoption and for promoting our in-house fundraising events. By the autumn of 2022 our followers on TikTok grew to over 50,000
Whilst rescuing record numbers of dogs this year the increase in intakes has of course increased our workload tremendously, we are proud to say that our wage bill hasn’t risen in comparison. We are forever mindful that all donations are given to help the dogs, so we continually strive to make sure that is exactly where the money goes.
It’s been a difficult year with regards to ongoing veterinary care with just one dog alone requiring over £7,500 pounds worth of veterinary treatment and care, stretching over a six month period. Tara was only a young dog under one year of age and the costly treatment was required in order to save her hind leg from being amputated. In April of this year she went to her forever home, following a chance meeting with a family of supporters who have adopted numerous dogs from us over the years. Tara just happened to be assisting one of our volunteers, at our spring fundraising event, collecting donations at the entrance to the Centre when the family arrived. The rest as they say is history, save to say Tara is now living her own particular dream, in the heart of a close-knit family of dog crazy individuals! Thanks to donations from our regular supporters, we were able to find funds available to pay for Tara’s treatment as an appeal for direct funds at the time, was poorly supported raising only just over £650.
Sadly, 7 month old Rocco, a dog saved from Bosnia, arrived at JFD with an elongated, deformed hind leg (most likely congenital) causing him such disability, that denied him the freedom to run and play like other adolescent dogs his age. Xray’s of the limb proved there to be no other option to save his leg via remedial orthopedic surgery and the decision to amputate ASAP was made. Unlike Tara, this time a Go Fund Me appeal target of £2,000 achieved its goal within 48hrs.
As costly as the veterinary treatment of the above named dogs has been, the trustees are all in agreement that every penny was well spent and what a privilege it is to help such dogs.
Fundraising
Income largely consists of Donations, Adoptions, Direct Debit Schemes, Fundraising and Legacies.
In the spring of 2022, due to the success of our two annual Winter fundraising events, we decided that following the summer of that year we would aim to have monthly fundraising events throughout the Autumn & Winter of 2022/23 Our only concerns were, whether we would be in danger of overkill, whereby people would become bored with monthly events to the point the events became poorly attended and whether the increased workload would become too much for our staff and volunteers. We are so pleased that neither of these concerns proved to be the case and each event becomes busier than the last and has become by far our best way of securing reservations and loving homes for our dogs. We are completely indebted to our wonderful volunteers who step up to the plate each month to arrive extra early on the morning of each event in order to muck out and exercise all the dogs to ensure all are clean, fed and calm by the time the doors are open at 10am. Likewise to our dedicated staff members who all clock out at 10am (but carry on working as volunteers) so that not a penny of the event money raised, is taken away in wages. There is also an increased workload the day before each event, as our reception is converted into a tea rooms and cash and carry runs are undertaken in preparation for refreshments – cakes, teas, coffees, pastries, homemade soups and sandwiches. The clear up

operation the next day is also a job in itself that our lovely reception/admin team undertake. Last but not least we cannot finish without a mention for our amazing social media volunteer who burns the candle at both ends preparing each and every dog’s profile, to place on the kennel door of each and every dog in our care.
Last but not least a huge thank you to the ladies who help to run the on-site charity shop. The endless task of sorting the endless stream of donated items such as clothes, shoes, household goods, jewelry and books into piles of saleable items, goods that the ragman will pay for and take away, as well as the items that are simply not fit for any other purpose than the tip, is never ending. Then taking the saleable items and presenting them in such a way that they not only look their best but reach the best salable price possible. This really is a thankless and endless task, but a task that turns donated items into money!
As a charity we really are so lucky to have such an invaluable and hardworking team of genuine animal lovers.
Our partnerships with the amazing team at Gravity Digital, who design and maintain our website FOC, Ian Richardson Photography, Allestree Pet Supplies, Kingsway Pets At Home, Trusty Pet Supplies, Mickleover & Trusty Superstore at Kingsway Industrial Estate remain as strong as ever and we are forever in their debt!
Always grateful to our Patrons Ellie Williams and footballer Will Hughes for their generous annual donation and support in the work we do.
Objectives and Activities
The Trust is an unincorporated body and operates a non-destruction policy. The Charity's purposes are set out in the constitution. The charity objectives are:
-
To rescue dogs who through no fault of their own have found themselves lost and alone on the streets, both in the UK and in some of the cruelest countries in Europe.
-
To take in dogs whose owners can no longer keep them due to marriage breakdown, unemployment, eviction, illness, or death.
-
To worm, fully vaccinate, microchip, spay/neuter and get veterinary attention when needed for all dogs coming into Just For Dogs.
-
Re-home in a responsible manner and without long lists of restricting guidelines. We insist on our dogs being offered a kind, loving and responsible home. We are quite prepared to rehome dogs to families with young children, senior citizens, and people in full time employment as long as these people understand that it has to be the right dog to fit in with the right environment.
-
To operate a very strict non-destruct policy where only terminally ill dogs that are suffering are put to sleep or dogs that, in our opinion, are exceptionally aggressive and so would pose a great risk to the public and other dogs alike.
-
To offer help and advice to anyone in need, with regards to behavioral issues or any dog related problem.

- To promote responsible dog ownership with regard to the importance of vaccinating, neutering, worming micro- chipping and advise on the legal requirement of all dogs to wear collar identification discs, bearing owners name, address, and telephone number.
The number of unwanted family pets requiring our services is noticeably reducing year on year as many homes are advertised, sold, and bought via social media with families managing to rehome through friends and family reducing the need for them to come into rescue. In order to avoid empty kennels and once the need of local dogs have been met, we have offered vacant kennel spaces to our rescue partners in Bosnia and Romania.
Organisation
The trustees meet on a regular basis at which the funds available are discussed. The trust has several key volunteers who help out at the Sanctuary, run, and support fundraising events and also attend other local events to promote the Charity, we are eternally grateful to these volunteers without who we would be hard pushed to continue all aspects of our work to such a high standard. Also to our dedicated staff members who also commit to untold hours of voluntary work throughout the year.
Financial Review
Financial Position
During this year the charity's total incoming resources were £165,184 (2022: £128,778). The resources were mainly from Donations, Adoptions, Legacies, Events / Fundraising / Prizes. Total resources expended were £169,236 (2022: £147,091). The unrestricted funds of the charity at 31 August 2023 amounted to £426,975 (2022: £431,027).

Risk Management
The trustees have examined the major strategic, business, and operational risks which the trust faces and confirm that systems have been established to enable regular reports to be produced so that necessary steps can be taken to lessen the risks.
Plans For Future Periods
As always our main objectives for the year ahead will be securing the financial future for JFD. We hope to continue with the upward trend of helping more dogs whilst maintaining the quality of families, couples and individuals stepping forward to adopt.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Just For Dogs (East Midlands)
We report on the accounts of the company for the year ended 31 August 2023, which are set out on pages 7 to 12.
Respective responsibilities of Trustees & Examiner
The Charity's Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for the year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
Having satisfied ourselves that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
-
Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
-
To follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145 of the 2011 Act; and,
-
To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Examiner's Statement
Our examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanation from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention:
-
which gives us reasonable cause to believe, in any material respect, the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 and 387 of the Companies Act 2006; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of section 394 and 395 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice : Accounting and Reporting by Charities have not been met; or,
-
to which in our opinion attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

3. Accounting policies (continued)
Incoming resources
All incoming resources are included in the statement of financial activities when entitlement has passed to the
charity; it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the charity and the
amount can be reliably measured. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:
-
income from donations or grants is recognised when there is evidence of entitlement to the gift, receipt is probable, and its amount can be measured reliably.
-
legacy income is recognised when receipt is probable, and entitlement is established.
-
income from donated goods is measured at the fair value of the goods unless this is impractical to measure reliably, in which case the value is derived from the cost to the donor or the estimated resale value. Donated facilities and services are recognised in the accounts when received if the value can be reliably measured. No amounts are included for the contribution of general volunteers.
Resources expended
Expenditure is recognised on an accruals basis as a liability is incurred. Expenditure includes any VAT which cannot be fully recovered, and is classified under headings of the statement of financial activities to which it relates:
-
expenditure on raising funds includes the costs of all fundraising activities, events, non-charitable
-
trading activities, and the sale of donated goods.
-
expenditure on charitable activities includes all costs incurred by a charity in undertaking activities that further its charitable aims for the benefit of its beneficiaries, including those support costs and costs
-
relating to the governance of the charity apportioned to charitable activities.
-
other expenditure includes all expenditure that is neither related to raising funds for the charity nor part of its expenditure on charitable activities.
All costs are allocated to expenditure categories reflecting the use of the resource. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs are apportioned between the activities they contribute to on a reasonable, justifiable, and consistent basis.
Grants
Grants received are credited to incoming resources once any related goods or services are expended or delivered. Any grants received but where the related goods or services have not yet been expended or delivered are classified as Deferred Income.
Tangible assets
Tangible assets are initially recorded at cost, and subsequently stated at cost less any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Any tangible assets carried at revalued amounts are recorded at the fair value at the
date of revaluation less any subsequent accumulated depreciation and subsequent accumulated impairment losses.
